Midnight Resistance (ミッドナイトレジスタンス Middonaito Rejisutansu?) is a side-scrolling action shooting game produced by Data East for the arcades in 1989. The game was ported by Data East to the Sega Mega Drive in 1990 and by Ocean Software to various home computer platforms during the same year. The game is set in a dystopian future where the player controls a member of a resistance movement who goes on a mission to rescue his kidnapped family from a mad scientist.
    Game Play:
Midnight Resistance features play mechanics and controls similar to that of the Contra series, and can be played by up to two players simultaneously (except Sega Mega Drive). The main distinguishing feature is the inclusion of a rotatable joystick similar to the one used in Ikari Warriors, in addition to the traditional set of shoot and jump buttons, allowing the player to adjust his character's aim in one of eight directions by rotating the joystick clockwise or counter-clockwise. This allows the player to keep their aim in one direction while moving in another, even while crawling or jumping.
The power-up system is similar to the one featured in Heavy Barrel (a previous Data East game), in which the player collect keys after defeating certain enemy soldiers (each player can possess up to six keys at a time). At the end of each stage the player will enter a weapon storage room in which various new weapons and other power-ups can be released from their lockers depending on the amount of keys in the player's possession. When the player loses a life, he will drop all the weapons and keys he has in his possession and they can only be recovered if they don't fall off-screen.
The two types of weapons that can be purchased in the weapon stores are special guns that will replace the player's default rifle (or whatever other special weapon he may be currently wielding) and backpack weapons that are launched by pushing the joystick up while pressing the shoot button. Both types of weapons have limited ammunition and when the player's special gun runs out of ammo, he will revert to the default rifle. Additional ammo for the player's current weapon can be purchased in stores as well when available. Other power-ups includes a "supercharge" upgrade that improves the firepower of the player's current weapon (this upgrade is lost when the player loses a life), a barrier that provides temporary invincibility, and extra lives.
There are a total of nine stages, each with its set of unique obstacles and adversaries that the player must overcome. Before the final stages, the keys he has collected during the penultimate stage can be used to free the player's relatives before the final battle with Crimson King. The ending varies depending on how many family members the player has rescued.

The Megadrive/Genesis edition is definitely the best port, but the ZX Spectrum version had its own character which isn't obvious until you play it. The music is great on real hardware (audio emulation still can't quite match the physical hardware) and your character feels faster than many other versions. Admittedly there's slowdown during screen scrolling, but I find it creates a bullet time effect that gives you time to take out enemies.

The Atari ST version is full screen like the Amiga version, Atari ST ports would often have cropped boardered screens and smaller playing areas. There was a price to pay for that full screen though because the smooth scrolling had to be sacrificed to allow for it. The ST version jumps from one screen to the next without smoothly panning across like the Amiga version.

Palette data from the Amiga version was ported from the ST and lacked the proper colours. This was later fixed in a patch by members of the WHDLoad team. With the patch you can also use the cd32 and 2 button pads for the game. Music was just ok IMO. Amiga version was I believe the only 2 player version at the time. I had the C64 version back then which was also pretty good. MD version looks nice with the parallax.

***** After watching a lot of these comparison videos I'm beginning to think the Atari ST may have done more harm to the Amiga than Microsoft ever did due to all the crappy ST ports the Amiga had to put up with. It seems pretty rare in these videos to find an Amiga game that actually took advantage of the Amiga's abilities.

Here how all arcade ports are made in the 80's and 90's. Devs go to the arcade. Watch and time every sprite. Try to re draw the sprites. Go to company to get the game greenlit. Get greenlit. Play test. Bug fix. Add music. Ship the game. Get money. So on and so on. And that's how all arcade ports were made back in the 70's and 80's.

Usually happens that LAZY ports from Spectrum ended showing even worse performance on superior hardware like CPC or MSX... As far as i remember, it was related to the way Spectrum handled the video memory, MSX and CPC used some kind of hardware aid not supported by direct spectrum ports.
The Amstrad CPC is a very capable machine. Gryzor is really awesome on the CPC. Midnight Resistance could have reached the same level...
My opinion is that the MD/Genesis is better than the Arcade. Better BGM, same playability, and good GFX, the only problem with that version is the saturated green and red colours that strike directly to the retine.
Amiga port is very good, however it has it's drawbacks, the dark screen and reduced window... Yes, it's slitghly faster than the Arcade and MD versions, i guess due the reduced screen. But Amiga is able to do it much better. It comes to my mind Ruff 'N Tumble.
ST port is just decent... Sadly here it was recorded using SFX instead BGM during the gameplay.
The AY tunes for this game, taking in consideration the limitations of the YM2149F are decent too.
The game screen is bigger than on the Amiga counterpart, but it moves silightly slower... Nothing serious.
However, again, in this case either, ST can do it better. Specially with the scroll... No scroll was programmed on this version showing the team laziness/unability... Sly Spy for the ST, has scroll... So it can be done if you take seriouslly the task.
Spectrum version is abysmal... It's even difficult to follow the main character on the screen due the colour clash... But, well, Speccy was not famous for being able to handle these kind of games properlly, aside meritorious titles like Northstar.
But what about the CPC version?
A complete waste... A direct port from Spectrum, resulting not being optimized for the CPC, crawling all around... Well, at least there was no colour clash... Avoiding lazyness, CPC can do things way better.
The C64 version was quite neat, cheesy tunes, fast pacing, and fair control.
Sadly in the video capture here, music is not showing it's true potential.
What can we say about the C64 version? Not a lazy port at all.
HOWEVER, characters could have been drawn in Hi-Res... Like in Navy Seals, or at least have the main character drawn that way...
Under my point of view, FX team didn't succeed, except on the 64.
ST version lacks a proper scroll.
Amiga version lacks a bigger window and needs a brighter palette.
CPC version was a cut/paste from the Speccy version... Wrong resolution, no scroll... Disastrous.
ZX Spectrum version, was a kind of joke... Messy, slow, poor...
Arcade version is ahead on playability, probably the second best BGM... But i've seen better graphics and movement on games using the same hardware.
Midnight Resistance was a GREAT game though.

  • @amanloop
    @amanloop Před 9 lety +1

Gfx (despite some harsh colouring) and overall Sound go to Mega Drive. Playability goes to Amiga for single player and its unique 2-player option, despite having only one button, the music sounds better too. Also, the backgrounds seem to be drawn closer to the originals. Most accurate in terms of tricks against foes goes to Spectrum (and Amstrad). Spectrum wins the 8-bit crown here. C64 version seems like a big wasted opportunity, could be much better.

I even attempted to brighten the footage within the emulator itself. No change. Not only that. I tried it with several different rom sets & had the same result. I could only conclude that it was the game itself. But yes. I have seen other videos of the Amiga version & it was brighter. I could not pin point the issue.

Mark Dickson The reasons is that graphics for Amiga version were originally painted on AtariST. Just, programmers didn't made the proper conversion of the RGB values.
AtariST has a palette of 512 colours... while Amiga500 hada palette of 4096.
There are even patches for double bright the palette.
At 90es, what I did was to module the fantastic Commodore1084 monitor.. You could easily make games fullscreen and tune-up bright and contrast.
If you had the Amiga in a regular TV you loose these features. Just it was a bit expensive to buy Amiga500, a monitor and a half-meg extra Ram..

I was expecting the arcade to be the clearly superior version, I have to say I like the Genesis version all around much better than the arcade, even with the music (this part surprised me the most since I already saw how bland the graphics were)! That leaves arcade second, and from watching the video, Amiga third, then ST, C64 after that, and the ZX Spectrum and Amstrad versions were both just horrid, the hardware was just never meant for something this detailed. The Amstrad version probably beats the ZX Spectrum one, except for the lack of music, which the ZX Spectrum actually does have.

Ayo Kayo Gameplay-wise, the Genesis couldn't do the controls, and I never looked at the backgrounds enough to notice the lacking details. I just thought the arcade's color usage was a bit bland. But I don't think there's much debate that the music in the Genesis version was superior.
So yeah, arcade for the gameplay, Genesis for the music, and graphically it depends on what you're looking for. I think the Genesis has better color usage, but the arcade has some extra details, and also two-player mode.

Mega Drive has nice parallax scroll but the graphics feel less faithful to the arcade than the Amiga (lacking some detail). Music could have been so much better on the Amiga but they would have needed someone like Chris Huelsbeck or Martin Walker to do the job.

    • @chyronrus
      @chyronrus Před 10 lety

For arcade conversions it definitely was (it was simplest and cheapest platform of '80s too, while iirc Atari was most pricey and graphically capable - google enthusiast developing Wolfenstein for Atari 8-bit), but in that era it had advantages like faster CPU and higher resolution - iconic StarRaiders2 are as playable on Spectrum as on AtariXL, but there were no Elite and other "real" 3d games for Atari, and C64 also was behind in that area. Games that were done with hardware limitations in mind had advantage of superior resolution though.
Yes, ZX aged badly moment _next_ generation of home PCs like Amiga and AtariST arrived, but lot of people still choose higher-res ZX games over snappier and colorful but lower-res other platforms of HIS era for their nostalgic emulated game-fix.

Amiga is the best version, well it's "almost" the best version, but a lack of two player option on the Megadrive version is unforgivable in my opinion. Midnight Resistance was the second game I had on my Amiga, short load times and 2 player coop. Absolutely awesome.

There is no point in producing a video of games that played in much lower resolutions than 480p in hi res. It would do nothing to improve the video quality. The only thing it would accomplish is a false sense of worth that isn't needed.

My rank from best to worst:
    1) Arcade
    2) Mega Drive
    3) Amiga (better music than the MD version, but graphics are too dim and gameplay is slower)
    4) Atari ST (graphics look washed out, no in-game music, decent speed)
    5) Spectrum (ugly graphics of course, good music, good speed)
    6) C64 (probably more polished than the Spectrum version, music is probably better, gameplay is not as accurate as the Spectrum though)
    7) Amstrad (a Spectrum port, only 4 colours but looks okay, sprites are better, no in-game music, much slower than the other versions)

    • @WWammyy
      @WWammyy Před 10 lety +7

I would say the MD version also has better music than the Amiga version a lot like the Arcade version but sounds more powerful IMO. The Arcade the soundtrack sounds muted in comparison and the Amiga version sounds very much like midi with a bad flute kind of sound font it could have been much better.
