    On this day in 1959 {Feb. 10th} Link Wray & His Wraymen performed "Rumble" on the late Dick Clark's American Bandstand
    Ten months earlier on Apr. 28th, 1958 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; it peaked at #16 & spent 14 weeks on the Top 100
    It was featured in the movie 'Pulp Fiction' and the pilot episode of HBO's 'The Sopranos'
    Sixteen days after his death Bruce Springsteen performed it in tribute at a concert in Trenton, NJ...

    Me and Rob (drummer on Shadowman) toured Europe a couple of times, and Australia too - alas, no US gigs, so the only Cambridge we may have played is in the UK... we did some great shows in England and Scotland.
    Link's US touring band did great, too, and we shared some tour stories over the web when Link had passed away.
    Hour long encore - that sounds like Link! probably all the songs again, in a different order, with Rumble as opening and closing song.

    I just love the 50's "proto punk" by Link Wray (and his Ray Men). Duane Eddy, Eddie Cochran, and others, really exploded the potential of the electric guitar, and especially distortion electric guitar. Amps turned up loud, with early amp effects, twangy guitars, and driving primordial drum lines.These were a part of this early punk expression. It was a reflection of inner city pachuco attitude's that developed just after WWII. Long live the twanger's and banger's.

    This is how you do a rock song that's simple and still has tons of attitude. Butt simple, only four chords to it (E minor, D, A and B7th). And that's allegedly not an effect at the end. Wray's amp speaker was fried after multiple takes and was crapping out on him. The birth of punk, and possibly heavy metal as well, right here in this classic song.

    • @dariowiter3078

    • @wiking44
      @wiking44 Před 10 lety +1

      Look at the video here on CZcams where Wray is in an interview and explains the effect at the end. It is indeed on purpose and he says nothing about the amp speaker frying. It came from using a mike on the amp the first time he played it on stage. It's called 'Link Wray on Rumble'.

    • @BigStar303
      @BigStar303 Před 10 lety

      Hasen Pfeffer I don't know exactly what Link said, but it sounds to me like the speed of the tremolo on his amp was simply increased as the song went on, till it was at its maximum setting by the time of the fadeout. It's very easy to duplicate this effect with any decent tremolo unit.

    That's how Link told me things happened... I was his bassplayer on Shadowman, Barbed Wire and at least one live album, so plenty of time to hear this kind of stories!

    To give you some more background information: when the band played live, they did plenty of vocal stuff and a handful of instrumentals. During (what was to become) Rumble, Link's brother would put his vocal mic into Link's amp, making it go loud and distorted - and the audience loved it. That's what Link was trying to recreate (at acceptable sound levels for recording).
    There you have it. Link was, in fact, the first known guitarist who deliberatly created an artificially distorted sound.

    Hi -
    The story of an audience mobbing the stage is one Link told me, too; it didn't have anything to do with the title Rumble (I think that was coined by Bleyer's daughter). Link, his brothers and Shorty Horton played at a dance when rumour had it that two gangs chose there and then to 'sort things out', and one of Link's brothers overheard some heavy guys making threats thinking Link was ' one of them' (=the other gang). Sure enough a fight broke out, and they were threatening the stage...

    Rumble 'came later in 1958', OK, but it was recorded in 1957. Working title: Oddball. One of so many songs cut as acetates by so many bands...
    Then after a while the acetate was played at the birthday of Cadence record boss Archie Bleyer's (step?)daughter, who loved it - in fact, all her friends did, so it was released after all, re-named Rumble.
    And hey, "the rest is history" is more than a phrase here. Rumble did actually change history.

  • @Bietel
    @Bietel Před 13 lety

    Well, - no, Link told me the story about the gang fight and the gun and the story of how Rumble came about as two different occasions. Remeber, Rumble wasn't named Rumble at first, it was their take at a stroll - that's what the audience requested, 'hey, play us a stroll'. The stroll was a slow dance, so Doug started a slow drum beat, to which Link improvised the chords that became 'that oddball song' everybody kept asking for. The acetate said 'Oddball', it was changed to 'Rumble' for release!

  • @Bietel
    @Bietel Před 13 lety

    Plus - lots of people first heard the tremolo effect when they heard Rumble (in the closing chords). And Link is generally acknowledged as the Father of the Powerchord, also because of Rumble.
    People from Bob Dylan to Sid Vicious, Neil Young to Lemmy and Pete Townshend to Elvis Costello say they were influenced by this song by Link Wray and his Ray Men. ( "I wouldn't have picked up a guitar if it wasn't for Link Wray's Rumble" - Pete Townshend.)
    Rumble actually DID change history.
    OK?
