CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Nicholas (Michael Douglas) jumps to his death, only to land at the birthday party Conrad (Sean Penn) has waiting for him.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director David Fincher followed the success of his dark and atmospheric crime thriller Seven (1995) with another exercise in stylish film noir, this time lifting the pallid atmosphere a notch to indulge in a fast-paced trip through the cinematic funhouse. Michael Douglas plays Nicholas Van Orton, a Scrooge-like San Francisco investment banker following in his father's Scrooge-like footsteps. On Nicholas's 48th birthday (the age at which his father committed suicide), his younger, free-spirited brother Conrad (Sean Penn) blows into town and gives Nicholas a special gift for "the man who has everything" -- a ticket to CRS (Consumer Recreation Services), a company that constructs games custom-fit for each participant to provide, as CRS salesman Jim Feingold (James Rebhorn) cryptically puts it, "whatever is lacking." Nicholas's secure life begins a downhill slide as CRS masterminds a series of elaborate pranks, harmless at first, that quickly become malicious and life-threatening. Stripped of financial resources and convinced that he can trust no one, Nicholas begins to wonder if CRS is a front for a more covert operation, and if the game is in fact an attempt to steal his fortune and leave him for dead. Determined to fight back alone, Nicholas infiltrates CRS in order to "pull back the curtain and meet the wizard."

What do you buy for the man who has everything? A sense of empathy.
Paolo Lery word
Spot on. And that's exactly why Conrad did this for his brother. In the most personal and profound way possible. He was about to die the same way his father did, by leaping to his death. It all comes full circle and you can tell he feels great to be alive and he appreciates life even more. This might be a candidate for one of the best and most important movies ever made. It never got the recognition it deserved.
@@revokdaryl1 he was trapped into thinking his fate was dying the same death like his father. And his brother had to wake him up and make him appreciate life.

Well said, love this film.

Wow, rich people really need complicated presents for their birthday.
LMAO!!!
Pure brilliance!
Rachel Dobbins LMAO!!! 😂😂😂
If you found out what some of them wanted you'd feel like moving to Dutch Harbor lol
In a way, that is oddly true. Generally, the richer one gets, the less material possessions mean to them, and the more inclined one is towards more immaterial things, e.g. legacy, reputation, spirituality, etc.
When he jumped, I thought this was the worst ending to a movie ever, then when his brother appears and wishes him a happy birthday, it's the best ending to a movie ever.
haha exactly
That was a super fast elevator lol
@@RobbiePfunder 😂Ya.
I was thinking the same thing.😂
@Lit Papi
Hey, no call for that.
Well, the actual ending was so over-the-top.
This movie is literally "I accept the Terms & Conditions" without reading it.
Happy birthday, Nicky! For your present, here's PTSD and the inability to trust anyone ever again :D
I was thinking the same 😂😂😂
He could always have a couple of LSD, MDMA or psylocybin sessions and be fine.
Honestly I would’ve run out of there hysterically screaming and cursing them all lmao
Lmao
@@JonnyKay-co4xcI am sure he was just making a joke and got the point of the movie
The best cinematic example of an earned happy ending.
iz it?
His brother deserves jail
This movie really tested my 'suspension of disbelief' but they made it work just the same.
To reply 4 years later (hope ur still alive and doing well) I think this is like Westworld. We don't know they make the game so perfect, for instance he could have jumped 2 feet to the left. But they are some high tech company that can make it like this so its fun
I love this ending. After all this shit they put him through, he even attempts suicide. Instead they all just wish him happy birthday and are all full of smiles. So bizarre, so brilliant
tbf after such experience you would get reborn into new life just like taking a breath
Such a classic mystery thriller. Poor Nicholas.
@Starwars Fan360 why not? People with criticism should elaborate before being asked to.
karanick016 greece This whole movie Is a continuous plot hole. What if he decided to Jump from the other side of the building? What if he didnt manage to return to the us? What if he hadn't asked for christine's address? Why are there bullet holes on the car if they are not real bullets? What if he hadn't shot his brother, understanding that this is the game? What if he bought a real gun, instead of using the one in his house? It seems that CRS is composed by clairvoyants, not actors. So many scenes that could have happened in a different way, resulting in a possible death for someone.
@@StephenKershaw1 I don't know, usually i'm fine with plot holes, i usually fill them with my imagination, but this movie is just hole after hole. It doesn't work at all imo.
So heartbreaking seeing Nicholas cry at 2:17. He really thought he had killed Conrad.
+Daniel Williamson that was a cruel prank
I know. What they did was really cruel. Nicholas's life could had been really in danger. He could had really killed Conrad and he could had committed suicide for real.
Daniel Williamson when i saw this movie i never saw it coming i never knew it was all a cruel birthday prank
Me either when I first saw it.
Daniel Williamson good twist
This David Fincher classic thriller absolutely shoulda been nominated. The sets, atmosphere, intelligent plot twists... and then there's Michael Douglas. Hs performance alone deserved recognition.
IMO there is Michael Douglas, holding together a ridiculous plot in an albeit well-made movie. Face-Off is like that too - two crazy, brilliant, over the top performances that make a stupid plot work and work well.
@@andrew_owens7680 Hmm, I thought the entire adventure was downright creative - and was more than happy to go along for the ride.
People hate on this movie a lot, including Fincher. I loved it. Yes, there's quite a bit of disbelief suspension required, and you can analyze the plot holes till the cows come home. I can put all of that aside, because at the end of the day, this was about family, and a brother who recognizes that his sibling is in pain, and does something to not only to intervene, but help him understand that life is not about material possessions.
Less would’ve been more with this movie. It goes a bit overly wappy with the set-ups. How did Fincher criticise it out of interest?
@@Daniel-mw7pu I couldn’t put Gone Girl in the same bracket as Zodiac and TSN. I wanted to like it but found it a bit odd and a bit meh by Fincher standards
@@Daniel-mw7pu Yeah, I just watched this again recently. As I said there's definitely a lot of disbelief suspension required, especially at the end scene. How does he crash through the fake glass, but what if he hit one of the girders which would pulverize him. I can see how they had to have him jump and survive to parallel his father's death, but that's a big one.
Regardless, I still enjoy this movie.
How the hell does the man who directed this movie hate it? Lol
People hate the film? Seriously? The film has a rating of 7.7 on IMDb, which is pretty high there.
One of the most shocking and unexpected movie twist of all time..
David fincher puts class in every movie he creates..
Even Alien 3?
@@klein2042yes
I disagree. It suffered from the same problem as Wild Things: after so many plot twists, you stop caring about what comes next.
@@klein2042 If we're talking about *'Alien 3: Assembly Cut'* then yeah, it's definitely good.
The theatrical version was bad because of the studio practically butchering the entire thing and giving no creative control to the director. It wasn't Fincher's fault, he was so angry that he disowned the entire film.
The Assembly Cut brings back a lot of the elements Fincher had in his original cut which actually makes it a good film.

For a man who had never truly lost anything this was his brothers gift, the gift of having nothing and still have to live everyday.

A fantastic movie. One of the best Michael Douglas has ever done. Also, a great costarring team that made this movie great. Watch it any chance I get.
all my friends enjoyed this movie, regardless of who, when, how old. Almost perfect, although the ending has been criticized for going too far.
The film is a classic.
id put Falling Down at the top too. both powerful.
bob smith a little. But, it’s a game. Tailored for each participant. His father jumped to his death as a child. He too was overworked and removed. The ending is fitting. Nicholas finally said enough. He thought he had lost everything.

@@bgielink "You want to know what it really is? What it's really all about?" And Nicholas Van Orton is frozen in place after he hears this line. Incredible acting.
More like being reborn a new man, born with a appreciation of life and empathy for others
How so bc I kinda thought the same but I’m curious
And he seemed to "die" 3 times before becoming a new man. Once in the taxi, once when he was drugged and "rose from that grave, and then at the end when he jumps and emerges as a new man. A Trinity of Baptism by Fire.
I love the ending absolutely because it is SO unreal and absurd. This movie is all kinds of paranoia to the utter max (esp. when you're convinced the gun he used was real) and just resolves so impossibly deus ex machina (and knows it) with no ill intent, its absolutely surreal (esp. with everyone clapping/congratulating him for his fall) and this nonsensical resolve to me is like... dividing by zero, and getting an actual answer. For this reason, it really leaves to me, a very haunting impression. Personally, I still think this is Fincher's best film (sorry, kinda think Fight Club's a bit overrated too).
+Johnny Quan Well, to be honest I don't think it was THAT absurd. Of course, this would never happen in real life. However, the company in the movie has been doing this for such a long time, keep that in mind. They did all kinds of tests in the beginning to see how he would react and respond to certain situations. But I agree, this movie is amazing. It's my second favorite movie.
What Conrad and everyone did was cruel and stupid. Nicholas's life could had been in real danger. Their birthday practical joke could had gone wrong. Nicholas could had killed Conrad for real and he could had killed himself for real. What if the birthday prank had gone wrong? Real bad consequences.
Exactly. The movie would have been boring as shit if we saw exactly what was going on the whole time. Instead we saw it from michael douglas' character's perspective which was awesome
The most unreal part to me is that when they show him going through the glass, you see that there are connecting beams every ten feet or so. You couldn’t have hit that small of a target even if you tried
SixLeafCloverOFire what’s your first?
1:56 I don't know why, but I just love that shot. It's so beautiful and so disappointing, after everything he has been through. We've ruined your life for a bit, but it's just a prank, bro.
This film is really underrated
This is one of the most satisfying and unique endings I’ve ever seen.
Like they knew he would land exactly on that mark, without hitting any of the scaffolding, coming through the glass roof!!!
THIS.
thats why its called a movie
I'm sure everything was covered.
Did you not watch the movie? The testing the put him through was to see how he'd react in every scenario so they could build his game for him. CRS orchestrated everything he did like a custom maze. Even if that's impossible, that's the movie, that's The Game.
its just a movie its just a movie
If i was in his place i would not care if he's dead or not
cause this went too far
Sofiane Daoui it’s a wake up call. He was turning into his father that’s the point. This program turned Conrad’s life around as well.
@@ajb868686
Wish I had the money to have done this movie for my dad💔.... But now I wish I had the money to do it to my narcissistic brother. 💔
If i was in his place i would literaly shoot myself
He was broken down psychologically and then built back up again as a stronger man. In order for that to occur, a person must be pushed too far, beyond their limit.
@@ajb868686 Yeah a wake up call into a paranoid schizophrenic 💀
IMO one of the best films ever made incredible rollacoaster of emotions ok it's abit farfetched at times but who cares it's amazing ,
I tend to think this ending was just Nicholas's imagination in those last few seconds before dying that this was just all some Elaborate prank.
In the 2017 Reboot - Conrad: "Yo Nicky, it's just a prank bro."
This is an underrated movie big time!
This was one of the weirdest, most twisted movies that I’ve ever seen
What if he jumped off on the other side? lol
thered probably be another airbag, honestly. They plan ahead for every possible scenario
He would've died if he jumped 2 feet off-target and hit one of those beams on the ceiling.
Robin lmao
His brother gets a discount
MrBanausos Well that semi-bald guy told him that he was glad he jumped for if he hadn’t he would’ve had to throw him off. So it’s safe to say it’s just movie logic that they knew he was going to jump and where.

@@veronicacruz5376 right?? 😁
The police department seems suspect, Rey was a screen writer, names of Actors (Hollywood), and there's mention of Freemasons. Once they said that, I was like- OKAY! This ain't no suicide. Clearly, the man was either forced to jump because some person(s) was after him, or he owed somebody "important"-- a large sum of Money, perhaps he was with holding some type of valuable information? Either way, The PD definitely shouldn't have given up and dismissed the Rey Rivera case so easily. It makes the PD look suspect too. Clearly this was no suicide.
no
@@voice1386 yes maybe?
The ending is what makes this movie great. Nobody saw it coming #great acting. Did this movie won any award?
Saturn-Award-nominated, but L.A. Confidential won it instead.
I watched this movie in a theatre. There was a real gasp in the theatre when Nicholas jumped. Thought out the movie, the company conducting the game predicted Nicholas’s every reaction to each situation. When he went though the glass ceiling, it was not until the very last shot that we see the mat. One of the last scene in the movie is Sean Penn character writing a check for the game. It was for a big number which leaves us to believe they have everything done to a tee.
This ending is fantastic masterpiece of WTF!!!
They actually predicted he'd land safely through that lol what if he jumped off the other side of the building
The actor was on the roof and he would've acted differently if Nicolas had walked to another spot of the roof
That was what I was thinking, and also I probably would've gone crazy
The guy said he was supposed to push him
The game organizers are a very professional team. They never leave their jobs to chance. Tests before the game started was already for this.
Well, it's kind of a stretch, but they spent so much time getting a psychological profile, it's possible that they were able to predict or manipulate him to jump off on that spot.
It's also possible they had protective mechanisms on the other faces of the building
The most messed up surprise party ever
This movie is in my top 3 favorites

So many wonderful details in this movie that reveal themself with each viewing.
