    I was at this concert, my brother Brice bought my ticket, flew me to California, bought me dinner, took me to the show, then drove me back to the airport to fly back home. 🎉 I had just had a baby and was still nursing so I had told Brice I couldn’t go, but bless his heart he insisted I come! And I finally said ok yes I’ll come. We both love the Who, I’ll never ever forget that day and this show!

    Simon Phillips! Many comments are for him and that's perfectly understood. He is one of the best of all time and yes he does not need to sound like KM because he has his own distinct sound. That's why the guys chose him without audition. They are very few in this business who can seat in KM's throne. He is one of them and he does it with his own style. His technical abilities and musicality are beyond words.

    Anyone else remember when this was on live TV in ‘89? It was on whatever Fox channel was back then…and for us drummers, this was a veritable drum clinic from the great Simon Phillips. And I recorded this on, of course, VHS and wore it out playing and replaying this all the time…until this finally came out as a DVD box set (sans TV commercials…hallelujah!) and companion booklet. This never gets old…even 33 years later. Sadly we’re only missing one out of the entire cast…the great John Entwistle…whose lightning fast fingers on bass will never be duplicated. Don’t believe me? Go to 12:30 in the song The Amazing Journey and just watch his solo…especially his left hand all over the fret board. Are you kidding me??? Was lucky to have seen the last show of this tour at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas as part of Randy Quaid’s “Greatest Party Ever” promotion that ran all summer long in those Miller Light TV ads. They did Tommy and their hits…albeit with none of the guest singers…just The Who with the back-up singers, the percussionist, Simon Phillips, the keyboardist, the horn section, and the electric guitarist (filling in due to Pete’s hearing issues back then while Pete played acoustic guitar…but during their hits section, Pete played an electric). Phenomenal show.

I had the great pleasure of seeing The Who, with Kieth Moon, in 1976, at the Oakland Stadium, I was right up front and Roger Daltry glistened like a Greek God. They played Tommy all the way through, then all of Who’s Next, and all their old hits, My Generation, Magic Bus, etc, and of course Kieth and Pete smashed the shit out of the stage at the end!! This was the first of many amazing shows on 89 that i gotto see. Saw then in arrowhead stadium. The turned the place into a giant pinball machine. Watched yhe balll on the screen to have it shoot out of the left screen. Im sure it was 15 feet in diameter. The crowd almost got it out of the stadium. The coolest was when it would run back to the floor it would hit the sound guy, or two of the speaker pods on the floor. When it did they would blink blue, green, or orange and go "ching ching" just like a bally machine. We were blown away. It was an honor and something i will never forget. John Entwistle was beyone compare as were the rest. Live horns, strings, it was majic pure brilliance

    • @PlayGtr
      @PlayGtr Před rokem +11

      Yes he's amazing he and Nancy Wilson are amazing and aggressive acoustic guitar rockers. I'm starting to realize why I've been obsessed with acoustic guitar since I can remember. It started when I was 4 years old and I'd listen to my older sister's Tommy the Who tape and quickly became obsessed.

    • @generoswell8890

      He played acoustic caused he sliced open his hand on a cymbal

    • @PlayGtr
      @PlayGtr Před rokem +5

      @@generoswell8890 that makes no sense at all. Tommy the Who is a heavily acoustic guitar driven album. THAT is why he played the acoustic guitar the entire time. You see, anyone who plays guitar, and I mean truly is a guitarist knows that playing acoustic guitar takes way more strength to play and is harder on the hands than playing an electric guitar, especially as aggressively as Pete plays. It sucks if Pete cut his hand, but playing the acoustic is going to cause way more pain than playing electric. With an electric guitar all you have to do is breathe on the strings and you get a sound. Go listen to Tommy the Who album and if you have an ear for music you will hear that it is strongly acoustic guitar driven like I said. I first listened to Tommy The Who when I was four as my older sisters had the album. I know it like the back of my hand. Plus I started playing guitar around eleven years old, I play classic rock, classical etc. studied classical guitar in college. I've always played both acoustic and electric but I prefer acoustic guitar as I can play aggressively and percussively and I prefer heavy strings because I get a heavier sound. The guys I've played with would always want to play my acoustic and complain to me about how heavy my strings are and that it hurts their hands because they're so used to the gentle playing the electric needs. Hence why the post we are replying to says that Pete can play the acoustic more ferociously then most rock guitars players can play on electric.... because it is not easy to play "ferociously", aggressively etc on electric it takes strength and can make your hands hurt a lot faster than playing the touchy electric with uses lighter strings.

    • @anti_alpha1132
      @anti_alpha1132 Před rokem +4

      @@generoswell8890 There were two main reasons why he played acoustic during this tour. He wanted to get closer to the original sound of the studio versions which feature lots of acoustic work. Also, Pete was heavily struggling with his tinnitus in 1989 and coulnd't reproduce the loud electric guitar sounds.
      The reason why his hand is bandaged up is because he impaled his hand on his guitar's whammy bar a few shows prior.

    I fucking love watching Simon Phillips play this music. I remember when I was 13 and this came on ABC on Prime Time TV. My parents refused to watch it but let me record it on our VHS. I wore this tape out watching it over and over and over. I remember being a little disappointed that Pete basically played none of the leads, but Entwistle and Simon Phillips made up for it. This was the first time I wanted to be a drummer, and I’m still play almost every day. Thanks Simon.

      Simon is awesome - a monster drummer who never gets the credit he deserves. Moon is irreplaceable, but Phillips is so technically good. He's about as good as you're gonna get as a fill-in... I like Starky, but he's a bit lazy on the kit. He doesn't play half of the fills Moonie (and Simon) did, and it ruins some of the songs.

    Absolutely chilling finale. This is 30 years old and we've heard Tommy hundreds of times, and still, this is chilling it's so brilliant. It's like Beethoven or Bach for the late 20th century. No other person in our lifetime could combine guitar mastery with composing genius like Pete. And Roger's pipes could be in the top 3 of vocalists in the rock era.

    I'm in a dunny in Brisbane testing out these new earphones I just bought, and am blown away! I opened the packet before entering the loos. I'm so blown away I'm not getting off the dunny anytime soon. How sick is that? Sick as in disgusting.
    A 55 year old rocking out on an Ozi dunny to Tommy live is probably not something these guys envisioned when Pete wrote this. Yes disgusting but I just couldn't take my eyes off the footage or pause the music.
    Oh fuck oh fuck!! The finale!!! Oh fuck Pattie!! (Sorry for the fks kids...)
    OK it ended and I'm in a public dunny with surrounding shops at a train station.
    Guess what was playing in the background when this clip ended and I finally came out of the cubicle?
    Behind Blue Eyes! How bizarre is that?
    Not Pete's original but just wow.
    I am one sick individual.
    RIP Mooney! RIP My Ox. I apologise to all the bassists on Earth who will never reach his skill. What a man.
