I’ve been using virtual copies in Classic for YEARS. They are even better than Versions as they can be worked on independently/individually.
Some fun with versions can be had by taking 3-4 versions into Photoshop (Edit in Photoshop or Photo Merge) as Layers and playing with them.

Thanks for another great video Brian. This is a game changer for me. As a classic user and an infrequent LR user because of the lack of some important features missing from LR I now have a better understanding of versions. Thank you, I typically use my IPad for all my edits, I just really like using it. There are not many people that are showing you how to use all the features on the IPad.
I had never really used this and never really understood how it worked. I kept getting it the wrong way around, create the version then do the edits. I now have it, do the edits, then create the version.

Another informative video, thank you. A couple questions. Do each individual version show up in grid mode or is there some indication in grid view that there are versions associated with the photo, and are they searchable? Do these version take up much memory? And why not just use virtual copies- or can you convert a version to a VC so they show up on the grid if individual versions do not do so automatically? I am intrigued by versions, but use virtual copies and I am really wondering if these offer any advantage.
Lots of excellent questions, Jonny. This is where I wish CZcams would let me either replace the existing video with a new one (where I can include these questions) or add onto the video. Regardless, let me see if I can address them all here. Before I do, I need to remind everyone that Versions is a Lightroom feature, not a Lightroom Classic feature. The LRC analogs would be Virtual Copies and Snapshots. Now, onto your questions:
1. Versions do not show up as individual thumbnails in the Grid view.
2. More to the point, there is no indication on the thumbnail of the original photo whether it contains Versions. I'm not surprised about the first item, but it's a glaring oversight in my book to not indicate the presence of Versions as a badge in the Grid view.
3. Versions are not searchable... at least, I couldn't get a hit when searching for a Version name and "Version" is not a recognized filter the same way that Camera, Lens, or ISO are in the omni search bar.
4. I have no indication that these Versions take up memory, drive space, or other computer resources. I see them as "presets" of sorts that store a snapshot of the edits and cropping of a photo. That can't take more than a few bytes of data if I had to guess.
5. Virtual Copies is a Lightroom Classic feature and is not available in Lightroom. I see Lightroom Versions as the love child of Lightroom Classic's Virtual Copy and Snapshot features.
Wow thank you for the extended answers. I am a LR Classic user so that explains why Versions was a new concept and icon (which I thought I had missed or unchecked as part of my LRC setup). Brian , That so cool. But you know what's even cooler? That this finally explains to me how I can use snapshots in LrC!. It'll cut down on the number of virtual copies of some photos. Especially when I just raise the exposure to send to the printer. ( I use Epson print layout program not LrC print module most of the time ). Thanks!! - Tim

And yeah, I always found it a bit confusing to have both virtual copies and snapshots in LRC. I mean, I get it and all, but it did seem like Snapshots was always an afterthought buried on the left side of the Develop module. I personally prefer the way Adobe built the Versions interface, though. I love those thumbnails (granted, Virtual Copies are thumbnails, too).
Seems more like virtual copy on Classic to me. But a neat feature. It might be nice to allow the option to show all the versions. Thanks.
For sure. The reason why I liken it more to a Snapshot is because you can add a custom name whereas you can’t do that with a virtual copy (aside from adding it to the title or caption metadata)

I never knew about this! So it doesn't make a virtual copy, it just stores the data for the edits? I'm curious about how much data ends up being stored.
I see Versions as the love child of Classic’s Virtual Copied and Snapshots. Each Version stores the entire state of the photo at the time you create one. I don’t think it takes up any meaningful amount of data or counts against your cloud quota.
Just the xml sidecar?
@@MartinHarveyAre you referring to an XML sidecar for Lightroom? If so, then no, because Lightroom does not use catalogs or sidecars with its infrastructure. Everything is managed in the cloud. The only time you'd get an XMP sidecar file is when you export "Original + Settings" from Lightroom. In that case, the original file + an XMP sidecar file will be saved locally.

@@brianmatiash Thanks Brian and yes I was thinking Classic and reacting to the storage, really non-issue. And yes you are correct the only time XML is stored locally is with "Original + Settings" - something I don't use these days and I suspect isn't used very much. I'd just been using DxO so maybe that clouded my senior judgment! Thanks for taking the time to respond.
hello ,is there anyone has a issue about color shift problem after the update?
whole my presets are unusable after the update.İf I attempt any change on the photo it directly ruins my whole image(original preset photo) .Please help same on iPhone Lightroom and Mac Lightroom ?
I've not run into any color shift issues using Lightroom or Photoshop on any of my devices. I highly recommend reaching out to Adobe's customer support team. They'd be the best resource to help troubleshoot the issue. I hope it helps!
@@brianmatiash i did it bro , i think it is changing the original color shift on a raw photo when i open it in lightroom , i jusct checked it ?it is changing my raw file colour , my preset settings are all ok , it makes my raw photo weird color , how can i solve this change on raw colour?
@omerbulbul8185 there is an option to apply a preset during import. Have you checked whether that’s what is causing the shift?
@@brianmatiash to be honest there is no problem when importing the lightroom , it change it when i try adjustment but , weirdly the programme is something really wrong now cause when i create a preset i am choosing the which adjustment i want on the preset (light , masking ,colour etc. ) when i apply the preset on the same raw image its totaly different not even close , and when you check the preset settings it doesnt choose what i choose and what ever you try to set again it doents make it , its totaly collapsed on the lightroom actually , previosuly i was able to use whole presets normaly and coppying normally changing adjusting but after the update lightroom is unsuable , first time i live it its so annoying!
