      Movie came out (taken a guess ) between 2005 and 2015.
      So let's assume the youngest man to serve on the ship was 18 at the time of WW2
      2005 to 1945 end of WW2 was 60 years so that would make the youngest man 78 if he was 18 in 45 but chances are he joined just before or just on the start of WW2 so he would of had to been 3 years older to join 81.. so let's say he joined in 42" at the age of 18 he's now 81
      I'm pretty sure the movie didn't come out till after 2005 and most service men would of been between the ages of 20 and 25.
      In saying that I'm sure your 100% right that they are vets but I'd say they would be most likely viet vets gulf war maybe even the oldest guys on tgis movie may have been Korean war vets. But I doute all of them where WW2 veterans.
      Think I remember reading somewhere by 2025 all WW2 vets would die out
      At 96 the last American airborne troop died in 2017
      The last triple flying ace of USA is now 100 years old still alive
      And the oldest WW2 vet still alive and the last of his country is a Fijian man at 105 years old
      Nikola died in 2015 at 96 and he was the last surviving Russian who toke the ritchstag in German
      Frans stiglar was the last WW2 German fighter ace who died in 2008 at 92
      (Btw look up the Frans stiglar- Charlie brown event) heartmoving story about charlie a b17 crew commander who along with 8 of his 11 crew survived the war when Frans stigler risked his life to save them and fly as a escort back to England
      Many years later the men the crew ans the family of the crews 17 children and 28 grandchildren all got to met there former foe now friend. And the bomber crew invited Frans to join there gentleman's club of old British b17 bomber men

      Believe it or not, the Iowa class was NOT the best protected of the WWII US battleships, that honor goes to the preceding South Dakota class. Granted they displaced 10,000 tons less than Iowa but the armor was just as thick and did not have to cover as wide an area. The anti-torpedo defenses were better than the Iowa, that long bow was recognized by the Navy as a weak spot but was necessary to guarantee a top speed 5 knots or more greater than the preceding South Dakota and North Carolina classes.

    • @toddkes5890
      @toddkes5890 Před 2 lety +14

      The key was getting the alien ship in "cannot miss" range of the guns. The guns themselves have a range of ~24 miles, so if they had plenty of ammo and time they could have held back and had fun plinking at the alien ship. Unfortunately they didn't have ammo and time, meaning every shot from the 16" guns had to count. They had to damage the shield generators to allow reinforcements to arrive. Chances are those first two fighters to arrive had been part of a CAP either being relieved every few hours or being refueled by the tankers for just this opportunity

    All Iowa class battleships like the USS Missouri were upgraded with modern (at the time) systems in the 1980s. They also have cruise missiles, Phalanx CIWs, Harpoon torpedoes, and of course almost all the original cannons and guns. The Iowa class battleships have the modern weapons of a destroyer combined with the raw firepower, armor, and size of a battleship. They are practically unbeatable.

    The Iowa class Battleships might be 70 years old but this is one reason to keep them around in a Digital World. When an EMF weapon disables all modern electronic ships these will be called into action. There is also a mothball fleet of cruisers and destroyers, ready to be activated in case of nuke EMF or weapon.

    • @robertf3479
      @robertf3479 Před 2 lety +9

      No, they won't be called back. None of the battleships (we have EIGHT the things as museums) will be brought back to active service. They are so old there are no replacement parts available anymore, nor ammo for the 5"/38s or the 16" guns. Much of the hull plating needs replacing because of rust and corrosion on all of them and the boilers ... are totally shot and the entire main powerplant would have to be rebuilt.
      To bring one back would take nearly 2 years of 24/7/365 work in a major shipyard with a large drydock just to get her ready for sea. Combat ... forget it. No ammunition in storage for them any longer. Rearming them with modern weapons would take at least a year, maybe two.
      Cost to bring ONE of the four Iowa class back to combat readiness ... two years and three to five BILLION dollars. Even more for either of the South Dakota class or the North Carolina. The eighth battleship is 110 year old Texas, a relic of WWI vintage in even worse shape than any of the newer (70 year old) seven.

The use of computer based shios is a huge problem, These modern destroyers are essential to multi miles attacks but they cannot confront the enemy on level ground, The range of the guns on the battleships was 37-30 miles. They have all been fitted with nissle capabilities. All analogue. An EMP cannot stop these old battle horses.

      +Andrea Bindolini, Vanguard was an off the shelf, broken shadow of the HMS Lion she could have been, her guns were smaller, fewer and way out of date (same old guns on her great auntie the Warspite). Iowa had equal protection, equal fire control, equal ergonomics, equal damage control, far better guns, greater survivability and greater speed and maneuverability, Iowa would absolutely win in a fight between it and HMS Vanguard.
      The only advantage Vanguard has over Iowa is see keeping, but both ships have so extremely good seakeeping anyway it would take a Catergory 3 hurricane for Vanguards better seekeeping to make any kind of difference.

    • @MikeBenko
      @MikeBenko Před 7 lety +2

      Except anything equipped with modern munitions, may it be a modern destroyer with cruise missiles, jets, subs, torpedo helicopters. Battleships as a concept (and armored naval vessels in general) were abandoned for a reason, they are costly as shit, and easy to sink, hell they were obsolete by the late 1930's as the Japanese demonstrated early in the Pacific War with their carrier based fleet formations.
      The entire premise of the movie to work it requires a number of silly gimmicks:
      1, It eliminates modern active over the horizon sensors and satellite communications.
      2, For mysterious reasons it massively understates the effectiveness of modern active defenses like Close-in weapon systems.
      3, The slow, dumb subsonic "handgrenade" munitions used by the aliens seem super effective against modern ships (tho their defenses are actually designed to intercept or evade supersonic missiles), but they seem quasi useless against a 100 year old steam ship. Why don't the aliens use missiles, rail guns or just plain old kinetic weapons? They seem profoundly stupid.
      And as a final point...If such an actual close range point fucking blank engagement was to happen, the nine 16 inch guns on the battleship would have disintegrated the alien ship in a single salvo, whatever material the thing would have been built out of. That is why battleships didn't fight at point blank ranges.
      It's still a good fist pumping scene, but don't use it as a reference to what beats what.

I've read his reports and files from that battle thru Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He had an outstanding crew and used newly installed Cmax-1 radar during a new moon at midnight to target and drop 93 14inch shells into the bridge and hull of the I.J.N. Yamashiro from 13 miles away. California dropped 63 shells and Tennesee dropped 69 shells. Pennsylvania was unable to get a target lock. Maryland had difficulty and dropped 48 16-inch shells, Missississippi was only able to drop one complete salvo of 12 14-inch shells. This was the last Battleship vs Battleship fight in history. RearAdmiral Olendorf called them the Ghost Squadron as 5 of the 6 were sunk in the Pearl Harbor attack and were rebuilt and relaunched. My Uncle George Wiley was on the Bridge of the West Virginia at Pearl and was killed, This was also Vengence for Uncle Herbert. The drift move was not unheard of and was indeed called "ClubHauling".

      Battleships became obsolete during WWII all because of the aircraft, Battleships were to big of a target and didn't (and never would) have enough AA defence against a large number of attacking aircraft. The only use for Battleships now days and many years after WWII were for land bombardment purposes. But destroyers, cruisers and frigates quickly stole that role as they were cheaper to produce and cheaper to maintain and operate. It would indeed be cool for Battleships to return but the cons would far out weigh the benefits.

      Battleships may make a return, with the advances in CIWS point defense. The major problem for battleships is their massive sizes means they lack maneuverability, and are a much bigger target as someone else pointed out. CIWS neutralizes the advantages of small targets like missiles and aircraft. It won't eliminate them, but the fears of aircraft are lessed greatly. The issue would be giving the battleship an offensive complement that couldn't likewise be intercepted (the Israelis have defenses that can intercept artillery shells), but that will have a solution I figure in a while. Drones might just be the biggest enemy of capital ships' return, because of the possibilities.
      Cheers.

      They are all fully stocked, The congress has passed laws to refurbish these battle horses to be brought back to ready condition. There are crews that are paid to keep these ships ready to go, In case of emergency. As I stated in my first post 4 months ago, They have all been refurbisehed back to orginal condition, with missles and other modern ordinance, but those things will go down on the first EMP to be used against it. The rest of the ship will be able to function in analogue and still be able to fire the big guns. So in a warship battle against say Russia, the Russian ships wil be dead in the water while the old battle horses will still be able to navicate the ocean and then use the big guns to take out the enemy. The younger folks don't understand analogue. They are under the false assumption that electronics rules the day. WRONG!! I use a turntable hooked up to 1970's stereo equipment and after trying digital CD's the sound quality is not even close to analogue. The reason is that digital recordings are squashed to fit in a tiny area. Whereas analogue is played back the way it was recorded.

      You have no concept of modern warships then.
      I love the Iowas as much as the next military history buff, but you have to be serious, battleships are pass their days. They’re too big and vulnerable and are a massive investment. For the price of one battleship, you could’ve possibly bought 2 or 3, maybe even 4 or more smaller more nimble and mobile cruisers/destroyers/frigates. From what I’ve read, modern warships have better range and armament than WWII battleships.

      plus Carriers have basically supplanted their Role, due to having "over the horizon" capability. Railguns MIGHT bring Battleships back, but it's far more likely they'll just mount two on a Cruiser and keep it multirole rather than make a Dedicated Rail battleship.

      pendraco2000 only problem is that I’m tests railguns only last 3-4 shots before ripping themselves apart :(

      Anderson Xiong Ok then HOW ABOUT we give these Behemoths a modern technology upgrade? Like Railguns, Radars, Gatling guns, Anti-air missiles and more other stuff?

    When he changed the target range to only 2,1, or zero and then anchored in. He then meant close quarters from that point forward which also deflected the incoming missiles.

      harry tate I’m going to be a bit nicer than ike. While it’s true that most of the Iowas were mothballed or scrapped, there are a few that are kept in minimum operating state. I may be wrong, but I do believe at least one is kept in Pearl Harbor. This is because while technology has really passed the Iowa, it remains the largest class of naval ship afloat other than active aircraft carriers. With some modern upgrades, the Iowa Class could be quite formidable, so logically, some are kept in a state where such a thing could be done. Hope that answers your question satisfactorily.

      3. I never contested them being the biggest battleship the US ever built, but aircraft carriers ARE larger, especially modern ones.
      4. Like it or not, without serious modifications and parts being pulled from two of them (the Iowa and the New Jersey), the Iowa Class HAS been rendered obsolete by MODERN technology. I’m sure they were high tech in the 90’s but it’s been over a decade since then.
      5. The Illinois and the Kentucky WERE scrapped when they were cancelled.
      6. The only reason to have old technology running around is because nothing has come along that is better. We have things that are better than the Iowa Class now.
