  • Electric KTM Freeride E-XC First Ride. Test everything. This is such a fun electric KTM motorcycle! Friendly enough to learn and play on, serious enough to be a very competitive tight course electric race bike! The 2020 Freeride E-XC electric enduro has only been imported to the USA twice. 2017 & 2020. KTM Freeride E bikes are only in limited numbers (200 total. All years) in the United states. Watch me as I test the 2020 Freeride E-XC motocross stye for the very first time! It may not be the racer than the ALTA Redshift was, but the Freeride E-XC sure is a lot of fun and most certainly still has a competition soul. Super fun KTM ebike.

    I don’t mind that it doesn’t have a clutch but the rear brake shouldn’t be actuated by hand. That makes it more like a bicycle instead of a dirt bike.

    • @JohnHowerton137
      @JohnHowerton137  Před 4 lety +12

      Rear left hand brake is used by a ton of Enduro riders, so the fact that I has it no clutch, it was natural to put it there. I’m installing a foot brake, but I’ll keep the hand brake if I can find the correct banjo bolt.

      It's easier for beginners. I got so used to it that I had some trouble not locking the rear wheel on an alta mx during some rocky sections. Takes about 10min and 20 bucks to mount a foot lever from another bike if you want it that way.

      @@JohnHowerton137 the brakes??? Oh you mean the coward lever!! :D
      No issues whatsoever. I did the first oilchange (200ml) at 3000km/1year and the oil was not even darkened yet.
      Electronics work fine, battery still as good as new. No leakings of any fluids. The brakes are what they are. I'm not a heavy rider (57kg full gear) so for me they have enough stopping power. When the brakes are becoming hot, they lose a bit of stopping power, but thats normal i think.
      I ride in mode 3 most of the time because it's the most fun. Sometimes in mode 2 when doing some technical enduro. Mode 1 is non-excistent for me since in my region there are no 'downhills' to do the regeneration. Also limited to 50km/h.
      These bike can take a real beating, I know that.
      I've seen people ride hard motocross on it. Fall on rocks a dozen times. Even ride UNDER WATER!! without any problems (only the handlebar was not under water)

    • @JohnHowerton137
      @JohnHowerton137  Před 4 lety +2

      Good to know. Thank you for the info. I’ve seen plenty of hop up parts for the brakes online. Nihilo has a nice carrier for the rear and coated steel pistons for the front brake. Larger rotors too. If the day comes I need more, I’ll look at that stuff. Really think I’m going to have to find a rear pedal brake. I don’t mind the hand brake most of the time, but it gives my bad left hand a beating. Plus I’m having a hard time getting use to no rear foot brake in the air. It’s almost got the best of me a couple times. I rode my 250 today and almost crashed because I pulled the clutch on the downhill instead of the brake, because I rode the Freeride all week 🤣

    Hey mate, do you know what the chain type is on this bike? I cannot figure out. The length of the link is exactly as is on 520, also the width of the roller. However this chain is much thinner than normal 520. Basically I want to get new chain with o rings and make it one link shorter to suit my desired gearing. I do not want to deatroy my old chain as I will use it with orifinal enduro wheels / gearing.

    • @JohnHowerton137
      @JohnHowerton137  Před 3 lety +1

      Normal 520 standard (no-oring chain). O-ring chains are always much fatter and they do suck some power. They can also rub cases up at the countershaft sometimes. The masterlinks are also a pain in the ass. I'm not anti-O-ring chain by any means, I'm actually pro o-ring chain, but if I was you in this situation I would just run a real high-quality standard for ease of things.
      If you wanted to convert to O-ring, I would probably convert it to a 428, haven't looked into the countershaft options for 428, but the rear sprocket would be real easy because they're 85SX hubs.

      That all depends on your throttle hand. Mode 1 wont spin anything. Mode 2 (enduro mode) is probably the sweet spot for having enough power but not breaking the tire loose. The throttle is different at first, but after about 10 hours of riding you get a handle on how the electric power works.

      michael day don't know and unlikely to ever test that. I suspect it's only 30, maybe 40 mins tops. This is an alley riding bike and not a highway bike.
      People may think that's bad and bash on it, but it's all relative. If you took a YZ85 (similar speed and HP) and held it wide open down the road like that, not only would the fuel time be the same, but the engine would blow up. You could rip town like mad man on a YZ85 with supermoto tires though.
      The late model bike's batteries are sufficient for what they are designed for. In on/off throttle situations, the battery life is good because there is basically no engine braking when not twisting the throttle... the bike is coasting and only really using accessory power. According to Strava, my friend and I were riding for 2 hours on Tuesday and used exactly 50% battery. Total ride was about 3.5 hours with the stops.

      It doesn’t until you hit the red flashing mode on the indicator. When it flashes red (0-10%) is when you’ll notice it... and you better get headed back to wherever you came from, because there is no neutral when pushing it 🤣 It’s like pushing a bike with a Rekluse clutch while in gear.
      Solid Red, which is 20% remaining, still goes good. You can see in some of my riding clips, she’s still rippin’ in the red ✊If it’s degraded, I haven’t noticed it. Maybe... when I was riding mud uphills, but that definitely could have been the huge amount of mud & grass buildup in the drivetrain, on the bike and my soaking wet gear.

    • @JohnHowerton137
      @JohnHowerton137  Před 4 lety

      Doubtful any, but I don’t know for sure. My basis for this thought is; No significant chassis changes in any of the 4 Freeride models that have been released since 2013. They bike sits in it’s own little niche comfortably. The suspension is already the latest XPLOR stuff from WP. This motor is going to be used in other KTM models like a scooter. Development is done and there is no need for any more performance for a bike in this category. I don’t know of any advances in battery technology that would be implemented (last update 2018). Global Economy isn’t in the best shape.
      I suspect it will be a few years yet when the market gets a little more competitive, before KTM makes a move... and that will be a race bike. This model will probably remain close to the same.

      It’s really all you need most of the time. With good traction Map 3 is really fun, but this soil is really light and silty. Lots of flat rock patches and diagonal shallow tree roots, and once the grass starts coming off and dries up, the surface starts to push. Think of a bed sheet on top a tile floor. You don’t see ANY of that in the video. Look how many trees fall because of the light soil. Map 3 will just explode a silt berm and actually push through/over it fairly easily. Tons of torque instantly. It’s like the clutch drop the magazines do deep into the back of a berm for the cover photo... Not the fast way through 🤣
      Make sure you watch tomorrow’s vid. You’ll see how much power Map 3 puts down ⚡️✊

      If you ride it like a sack of poop over the middle of the seat, not really. That’s not because of lack of power, it’s the weight distribution. If you have weight over the back... no problem especially in Mode 3. Watch a bunch of my other videos. I have it holeshotting 450s, pulling wheel for 100ft under power. Produces same torque numbers as a wide open 300. If you ride in places that never need more than 3rd gear, it rips.

      @@JohnHowerton137 Awesome!!! No, didn't know you had this video. Very informative. I did figure out today that if the generator is a 30 amp output, I would need a 4-prong L14-30P male input followed by the adapter to a L6-20R. This enables me to connect my L6-20P male in. At the house I had a garage receptacle (50 amp) to charge a Tesla owned by the previous house owner. Real nice because once I put in a L6-20R receptacle, it allowed me to pull the bike right into the garage and start charging without pulling the battery and hooking up to my dryer outlet which I see others doing. I did pull my battery today not because of charging but our temps are going down to 12 - 18 degrees F. So I thought to put my battery in the house and take to bed with me. KTM says after 700 cycles, it still retains 80%. Think about that. That’s like 875 hours of riding! And it’s still 80%! And I believe the battery might even have a 3 year warranty.
      The battery is $3,600 rumored. How many $1,000 top ends do you replace in 875 hours on a bike that’s ridden hard? Has to be at least 2 major rebuilds in a high performance small more bike of similar-ish power (250F) and probably another simple piston change or two. No fuel costs (like $1 to charge), basically no oil and filter changes, no air filter maintenance......
      Stuff all starts looking pretty good real quick 🤣 And it’s got power!

    • @JohnHowerton137
      @JohnHowerton137  Před 4 lety

      Yes, and maybe the only one... depending on how far they try and take you. If you have a smaller area, like maybe up to 100 acres that has trails weaving through it, this is pretty perfect. If they're going to take you out in the middle of nowhere with fire roads as access... it won't do it range wise. You're capped about 25 miles. It doesn't take very long to burn 10 miles or more of those on access roads. Chances are, your buddies on gas bikes are flying (everyone does)... so you're holding it wide-open and not conserving battery.
      Totally natural jump for you though. The weight will be weird to handle for a few weeks, then you'll melt right into it because it flows more like a MTB than it does a motorcycle. One of the benefits of no clutch (like pedaling), is you learn to carry momentum instead of ricocheting off everything because you can bang on a clutch.
      The SurRon would be an even better entry point for you for starters, but no matter how many people try and BS you into thinking that it's superior to this Freeride, it's just not true. That's like someone telling you they put beefy suspension on their XC bike and now it's better than your DH bike. It's just not reality.
      The SurRon is a good machine and can grow with you, but by the time you do all the upgrades to get it to similar specs it ends up being the same money. The Freeride is actually a motorcycle. KTM has made 3 other gas versions of this too.
      You can probably ride a lot of the mountain bike places on both of these bikes. Which would be pretty cool because then you can ride without your gas bike friends too and convert you to the dark side 😈😆

What does the replacement battery cost? That’s what makes me nervous about buying one. I don’t want a $3,000-$5,000 battery replacement to deal with in 3 or 5 years down the road depending on use. Did you have to install a 220 volt receptacle in your shop or garage? How long does it take to charge up? What are the other downsides you’ve noticed compared to a normal gas bike?

      @JohnHowerton137  Před 4 lety +1

      There's going to be an entire charge video at some point.
      Range improved with the 2018 battery upgrade.
      I almost never ride it in the highest power setting. No need usually. Too many factors to determine a max range/time. Just like if you gave Cooper Webb and some beginner both a 450SX. Cooper drains the tank in 45mins, the beginner takes 2.5hrs. I get about 18 miles 1:15 , my friend got 27.5 and 2h32 today. 100% varies on how and what you ride. Rides with short bursts of power favor run time. You can backyard ride one of these until your arms fall off and barely make a dent in the battery. Wide open down the street and you'll be disappointed.
      Battery is like 3K. I [think] it might have 3 year warranty. It will last longer than the chassis. After 700 cycles (875 hrs for me) they still retain 80% life.
      I use my dryer plug or charge at friends houses usually. Most of us are solar power, so it's free during the day. Charges from dead in like 1h45 on high. Ate lunch and it was done.
      Downsides = 2.
      I can't take my favorite bike for 35 mile rides. Forced to ride a gas bike.
      It sucks for anything that requires over about 45mph. It's not designed for it, so shouldn't expect it.

      @thatalaskaguy Před 4 lety

      John Howerton thanks for the info, good to read that the long term battery life will last longer than what I was thinking. Have you ridden in colder temps? I’ve got an electric Onewheel skateboard and an ebike and noticed they lose range when it gets down to 30°F and colder. Last fall I wasn’t sure if I was going to make it to work on my Onewheel as the battery went way quicker on the same commute I did dozens of times over last summer. I can see a time where e-dirt bikes could get way more popular as the battery technology advances. The ranges you are experiencing would only work part of the time for me unfortunately. I can’t help but wonder if they offered a manual trans with it if that wouldn’t increase battery life? The RC cars most of us had as kids had a high/low range, even my DeWalt drill has three ranges.
      Did you mean 11:15 in your video? The ODO showed 21 miles at 1.4 hrs which works out to an average speed of just under 15 mph. Your buddy’s ride was an average speed of under 12 mph. I need to do some recording of my dirt bike rides to see how that compares because it’s sounding awfully slow, but I’ve never tried to calculate my average speed on a dirt bike when play/trail riding so it might not be far off either. Snowmachining is totally different for our trails and conditions and I know my normal rides involve much higher average speeds. This will be fun and interesting for me to document. Right now I’ve got my heart set on a YZ250X for next summer and I’ll pass my present YZ 250 down to my son. There are a ton of places the KTM would be super fun but for $11,000. ( I think the charger is extra, WTF?) I could buy a TW 200 along with the 250X and only be $1,200 more at MSRP on both. I’m subscribed, keep up the great work! I’ve got more of the. To watch tonight 👍.

      Yes, the avg is slow when just play riding. The timer is running any time in the front wheel is moving. If you were racing motos and pulling off the avg speed would be double that.
      There is some decreased life when cold and I believe the system has a build in battery warmup feature. Keep in mind these are made and tested in the cold part of Europe and quite popular there too. Won't be making any videos about that here in Hawaii, sorry 🤷‍♂️😆

      John Howerton Oh wow, I didn’t realize you were In Hawaii! You’ll definitely be warmer than my normal temps for sure. I’m really curious about what my average dirt bike speeds are now as we don’t have the best trails or conditions. My summer riding is definitely slower than winter rides. In another video a different owner mentioned the power didn’t hit very hard initially, they said it came on smooth and had a bit of a lag so it was different and a bit harder to pop the front end up over things since it also doesn’t have a clutch. Have you noticed this as well?

      @@thatalaskaguy They weren't in Mode 3 then. It's full 300XC-W torque right from crack of the throttle. Electric Ditch Witch! The weight is forward, so it doesn't lift uncontrolled like a gas bike, but if someone can't lift the front in Mode 3 they have no clue how to ride. I barely use 3. It is different, but that's because the rider has been using the clutch to mask poor riding.

      They’re all going to be expensive. That’s just what bikes cost these days. I don’t love it either, but it is what it is.
      If you look back a couple videos in my feed the Electric Motion “Escape is a great machine. Not any cheaper, but it is much lighter. I’d have one of those, but when I found out there was a KTM importing again, I wanted the dirtbike inspired chassis over the trials inspired chassis. If I don’t go broke from COVID-19 killing the economy, I’ll probably get an Electric Motion Trials bike.
      You could look into the SurRon if you just want a ebike to rip the woods. They seem like decent machines with a big following and lots of hop-up parts.

    • @JohnHowerton137
      @JohnHowerton137  Před 4 lety +2

      Expect to wear out a lot more tires, because you’ll be riding a lot more since you can ride basically anywhere and it’s not a pain in the ass to prepare/clean air filters, change oil, filling gas cans.
      There is a 6.74oz gear oil change at 50 hours. The chassis will probably be worn out before you use a whole $8 quart. The battery will still maintain 80% charge at 875hrs (700 cycles @ 1h15) if the chassis or you last that long 🤣🤷🏼‍♂️
      If you ever feel bad about not working on it all the time... I suppose you could service the suspension fluids more often and grease the pivot points/wheels. Most people grossly neglect these areas anyway which are arguably more important than the engine for riding fast.

    • @JohnHowerton137
      @JohnHowerton137  Před 4 lety

      rkw junior it’s actually a hybrid trials tire that was designed specifically for the bike. It’s also DOT. The bikes are street legal everywhere except the USA. It’s a great tire for what the bike was designed for. Too soft for what I use it for most of the time.
      The bike is kind of in a class of it’s own. The Freeride line closes the gap between using a trials bike in gnarly trails and a traditional trail bike like say a 200EXC. Focus being on light weight and slightly smaller chassis (2” lower seat & wheelbase). The motors (gas too) are tuned like trials bike for user friendly power. Single track monster!
      KTM has made 4 versions of the bike 250 2T, 250F, 350F and Electric. In the electric they did also make a SX version for a few years. The Freeride line is pretty popular in smaller Europe, but in America we like everything bigger, so not that many (in any version) have been imported. I’d say the chassis is close to the size of the popular 230cc trail bikes from the Japanese.

    • @JohnHowerton137
      @JohnHowerton137  Před 4 lety

      rkw junior battery tech is still expensive. $3k of the price is battery. Keep in mind there is basically no maint costs or associated time (outside of wear items) and energy costs to ride are practically nothing. A days worth of riding is like $0.40. No more air filters!!! 😍 KTM says after 700 cycles (875 hrs at my avg), the battery still retains 80% of it’s capacity.
