We "sweep" our hauses with either a broom or a vacuum. But if we're vacuuming exclusively, then we "run the sweeper to red up the haus before we go dahntahn or ta see the stillers."
***** I have a good story for you Prepare: I was born and raised in Pittsburgh in a working class family. My parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles all spoke Pittsburghese with a heavy Pittsburgh accent- all of them. For some reason, I never picked it up (private school, maybe?). When I was in 3rd or 4th grade, one of my classmates asked me if I was from ENGLAND because I didn't talk like anybody else! LOLOLOL
Mark Lipinski That's hilarious Mark! And pretty random that you never picked up the accent. I've heard that national television and radio can have an effect on children and their accents. Do you think that could have been a factor for you growing up?
Both my parents are "yunzers". I was born in Cook County ILLINOIS, and as a kid I didn't understand why my friends joked on me about how I pronounced certain words and whatnot. One advantage I had was that my folks lived here 3 years before I was born, so by then they stopped using the term "y'uns," but my dad always called the vacuum cleaner a "sweeper" and to this day, as much as my mom tries to distance herself from Pittsburgh lingo, she *still* calls the toilet a "torlet"! 🤣
I never said "yinz", "slippy", or "hause" neither did my friends. But some of my family members did, depending on which area they grew up in. I just accepted that as a word they used and I didn't. I knew that it was a Pittsburgh thing.
I live in Ohio but I'm a PA native. I red off my table, sweep my floor, watch high school weaseling and would roll down a heel not a hill. lol The main thing Ohio has changed is I do say pop instead of soda. lol
sounds kinda goofy to me honestly, not in a negative way though, I have a couple friends from Pittsburgh and they're really cool, down to Earth, friendly people......That accent tho I can't put my finger on it......It's like a mix between a Cleveland accent and a Philly accent with some Rochester/Buffalo sprinkled in lol......I'm from Philly so you Pitts prolly think we talk goofy as well....we say you's....like "Any of you's seen that movie yet?"
Man, this brings back some memories. I actually understood everything he said. I moved to the "burgh" from California when I was 8 and all my friends thought I had an accent. They used to laugh at the way I said "down town" instead of "dahn tahn". I did not know what a "gum band" was when I first heard it either. I'm so glad I never acquired that accent. Very nice people there however.

I moved to Pittsburgh 3 months ago from NYC. LOVE Pittsbughese!!!!
Yins guys My grandpa used to say yins guys often... I miss him. He was from Pittsburgh.
You have the terms down and explained it well but your accent was off. It sounded too southern.
I never said "yinz", "slippy", or "hause" neither did my friends. But some of my family members did, depending on which area they grew up in. I just accepted that as a word they used and I didn't. I knew that it was a Pittsburgh thing.
i remember going to pitt for the first time... my first thought was "what did he just say?"
That's awesome :)
This guy reminds me of Ron Howard, and even sounds a little like him.
Cute. When I was young and visiting Philly someone said where did you get that crazy accent. I though what accent?
Don't forget about worshing something instead of washing it lol
Lots of similarities to a Southern accent. We use "buggies" too.
+Dave Evans it sounds nothing like southern to me.
Can I get some jimmies on my ice cream over at games n’at? Hehe
