Living with roommates is so hard...I had a similar situation with my freshman year roommate...I stayed in the room but she stopped talking to me and just partied and went to her friends dorm so I basically had the room to myself which was nice. Hope the transition helps you love dorm life a bit more than before 💕

hi college freshman here! i would advise you to try to room with someone u know if ur school allows u too or if u don’t know anyone that’s going to that school try to join group chats for that school so u might meet someone u might want to room with. I did a random roomate and i got super lucky and she’s gonna be my roomate again next year but idk in my school it’s very rare for that to happen

Many international students from China are only children in their families so most of the time they lack the skills to socialize with people of their generation. Also, cultural difference and language barrier can put international students in an awkward situation, especially when they need to learn a lot of things from the very beginning in a host country. I'm sorry that you couldn't vibe with your Chinese roommates but I'd like to mention that Chinese international students may have difficulty finding authentic Chinese food in a small town in the US so the only way to eat their home food is to cook by themselves. Also, home bug is an extremely uncommon issue for Chinese people for some reason. I never knew what a bed bug looks like until going to school in Texas and then I learned more about the bug problems from my American friends. So, honestly I feel that your ex-roommates don't even know how serious the issue is and they have limited experience with bugs. Anyways, hope you next roommate experience is great!

Also Chinese here. Just wanted to mention that there’s a lot of ppl in China so we socialize A LOT but yeah a lot of us do not have roommates growing up. Still, if there’s a problem, they should still try to communicate with everyone in the dorm.

Syd, I had roommates in college like that too that we didn't talk. Eventually I had good ones too. In time you will find a good roomie and it will work out. Just start keeping a mental list of people you know that you think you can live with and don't be afraid to ask about their plans for next semester.

i went to penn state my freshman year and i lived in west... my roommate wouldnt communicate at all with me and was literally the worst. so happy i rushed and moved to my sorority floor second semester. good luck to you :)

the exact same thing happened to me when I moved into my dorm at a new school. it’s super frustrating when you aren’t on the same page as the person you have to live for a year. my roommate was from a different country and the language barrier was extremely difficult. i completely understand and don’t blame you for moving and hope everything works out for you :)

yoooo i was in such a similar situation to you. i'm a freshman and didn't communicate well with my roommate at allllll (there was also a language barrier) so i switched rooms at the beginning of this semester. it was the best decision of my life tbh, hope your new roommates are a better fit for you!!

Hey Syd! I'm kinda going through the same thing as you, and watching your video gave me the little extra motivation that I needed to talk to my RA about switching dorms. I transferred to a different college this semester (currently my freshman year) and got paired with someone who's roommate from last semester left her without even letting her know. Living with her for a little over two months now made me realize why her previous roommate may have left without telling her. Nothing wrong with switching rooms, sometimes things just don't work out with the first person you dorm with! I hope things are a lot better for you with your next roomie! :)

I'm in my second uni apartment and but I'm on my second roomate on this one and honestly stressing out about things with her + all the school work was TOO much! A lot of colleges have horrible roommate systems. I've had two horrible roommates. One gave me extreme depression, the other gave me extreme anxiety. But the people I chose to live with were great.

I had a terrible roommate situation first semester of freshman year. I’m now in my second semester. I moved to college with my gay best friend from high school. As soon as we moved in he began to manipulate and gaslight me, take advantage of me, and use me for things. The campus police got involved after I moved out because they were concerned for my safety. Another campus program got involved, too. All of them plus hall and dorm directors/RAs said they were concerned for my safety and thought he would retaliate against me for leaving (key/slash my car, stalk me, hurt me, etc). I moved out in October and got into a new dorm with a super wonderful girl. I’m so thankful I’m out. I wish you luck in your new dorm and I’m sorry things didn’t work out with your previous roommate and suite mates. Love your vids and I’m excited to see your merch!

Literally this was me and my roommate last semester. We were very different and I could never do much. She ended up leaving the this semester and it feels way better without her. Next year I’m rooming with my teammates and I’m so excited!!

So happy that you moved away from that situation college is supposed to be a great experience not everyday is perfect but overall it’s supposed to be calm and fun. I currently live in a upperclassmen dorm and two of my roommates don’t like me literally because of my name. After the first month they would try to bully me everyday. honestly everyone is going to lie so they get a roommate. I didn't even have a questionnaire at my community college so I went in random for my suitemates and my initial roommate. Towards the beginning of the year my roommate and I were fine but then she got mad at me for stupid stuff like staying up too late (when she did the same and then woke me up at 6 for her 8 ams) and not cleaning the microwave enough (which she could have communicated to me). One of my huge issues I had with her would be that she liked the room SCORCHING HOT and I was by the heater so I would always open the window so I wouldn't roast to death and she would close it but everytime she'd close it I would open it because I was not about to roast to death. No matter what you do, you are going to always have the possibility of not liking your roommate. Facebook wouldn't really make a difference. Don't worry too much, and if you have to move it isn't that big of an issue. Unless you set out rules ahead of time and talk to your RA about it if anything goes wrong. Don't be worried, because even if you don't get along with your roomate and you are in a suite, you could always get along with your suitemates. The girls that I was next to ended up becoming my friends and I live with one of them now.

Hey Sydney!! This is my first video of yours that I've watched... the same exact thing happened to my dorm mate and I. At first we got along well, but then altogether stopped talking. Mostly because we were just so different in our wants and lifestyles... She is an extrovert and winds down from a long day by having friends over, doing homework with a big group of people, etc. I'm the exact opposite. After a long day, I like to wind down by chilling and doing my homework on my own, watch youtube on my phone, etc. Overall I guess what I'm trying to say is that this happens often and you're not alone when going through this. Everything doesn't work out but it's best to go your separate ways and be happy vs staying and trying to mold the relationship into a picture perfect state of being. Now I have my own room and I'm living my best life....she moved next door with a good friend of hers, and from what I can tell is also living her best life.

My sister also had foreign roommates her freshmen year at Penn State, and it was just really awful. One of them was crazy but bc of the language barrier, my sister couldn’t get her to stop being so weird. The other just spoke so little English it just wasn’t working. Happy that you can move to a more comfortable situation

I totally understand this. I am going to be graduating this May and trust me, living in a single was the best decision i have ever made. After my freshman year of having a roommate and having soooo many issues, afterwards i never wanted a random roommate again!! But anyway, “the college experience” that you’re looking for (so was I) and that is portrayed on movies and stuff is so not real. Like maybe if you joined a sorority or something (I wouldn’t know cuz that wasn’t for me) but for the most part, college is what you make of it. You don’t necessarily become best friends with your roommate, you don’t go clubbing all the time, and more. Overall, if you make a few good friendships, do fun things with them like going out to taco tuesday or something like that, get involved on campus, set your priorities straight, and do well in school, that IS your college experience and you will be happy. Once i let go of the fact that my college experience wasn’t like the movies, i was happier. I’ve tried the party scene, tried a sorority, tried it all...just wasn’t for me. So I wouldn’t live up to what you THINK college is and instead make your own college experience!!! :)

I live in a dorm as well. I live with three other girls. My actual roommate, who sleeps in my room, is one of my best friends. Then there’s two girls next door. One I like, she’s really nice. But the other one, not so much. So I get you. I would never move out because of one girl I just don’t really enjoy her presence is all. Hopefully you’ll find better roommates to have fun with!

Hey, just wanted to say that I relate! Last year in my freshman dorm I also had a roommate from Taiwan. Nothing against her because she was really sweet but we just didn't mesh and it was really hard because we had opposite schedules and daily routines. We hardly talked and it was super hard going in because I was expecting to be able to connect with her in at least some way. It definitely could have been way worse (I'd rather have that than a really wild partier type roommate), and she was a music major so most of the time it was like having a room to myself.
