      i actually kind of need some help figuring out where i am, so i’m 15 and have been dancing since i could walk, i’m a self taught dancer and the base of my dancing mainly comes from waving and popping, i pick up some new moves and things throughout my life span by, i guess you could say “studying” other people dance, or just watching them, whether that be on instagram, youtube, movies such as: step up 1,2, & 3 or so on. but recently i’ve been wanting to dip my toes into some new genres of dance such as tutting, and really taking control of the little movements of my body, i have pretty good musicality and my flow looks pretty nice but i’m not sure where at on the scale i am. i would love to make dance my life long career because i’ve had such a passion for it since i could walk and i love music with everything in me. i just don’t know where to exactly start with trying to meet my goal.

    I started at a skill level 1 about almost 2 years ago and I practiced every day for about an 1 and a half and now I'm a level 3 almost at a 4...I learn lots of choreo online and watch multiple videos on how to become better with movements and mindsets...it's a really fun progress because once you get that first combo down without messing up after practicing for so long, that sense of achievement becomes addictive and all you want to do is work harder to get that feeling again

    It's always been said that before you dance, you have to learn your basics, but how do I know my basics? Are dancing basics the same for everyone, or are there those specifically for a certain group of people? What are examples of the most essential dancing basics?

    • @lilacfloral1
      @lilacfloral1 Před 5 lety +250

      The basics are the fundamentals of style. For example, the basics in Hip-Hop are popping. By learning popping, you'll strengthen your fundamentals which will help you a lot when you are learning hip-hop. Everything is connected in one way or another so learning everything that you can can really help you improve as a overall dancer. "Are dancing basics the same for everyone, or are there those specifically for a certain group of people?" Well basics could be different for everyone (based on opinion), but in general, the basics like I said earlier really are the fundamentals. Examples of fundamentals would be training your arm hits, leg hits, basic arm wave, simple footwork combinations, tutting combos, dimestops, etc. The most essential dancing basics could be some that I listed there, but here is a list that I think will help (Popping/Hitting, Waving, Isolations, Footwork (ex: House, Shuffling, etc). Grooves, & Tutting). Other styles/techniques that I think will help a lot are Animation/Robot ( includes ticking, strobing, vibrating, dimestops), Fixed Points, Miming, Locking, and Boogaloo. There are more but those were the ones I think are really important. I made a whole post on reddit (best to read on the computer) that shows a whole guide to learning how to dance. old.reddit.com/r/Dance/comments/b0uqbd/learning_how_to_dance_official_guide_my_library/
      I included lots of different sources (including lots of Steezy videos and articles) that have helped me and so many dancers. Hope this helps and have fun :)

    I recently started to get serious about dancing (mainly as a hobby + within conventions and such) and since I started to dance practice nearly everyday for about a month or so for 2+ or hours - sometimes 5, I noticed that I went from a 1 to nearly a 3 in about a month and had no idea that there was even a scale! Thank you for posting these videos, they really do help along with this video as well. It seems like I am doing everything correct including making sure I start correcting any and all bad habits and developing my own style. I was worried that I was lagging behind or not doing everything I can to get the most out of the few hours I have to practice but it seems like I am doing okay so far. I am excited to see where I will be one year from now and also to meet other dancers as well. One of my goals for next year at a convention that I sell art in, is making it into floor wars. :)

    now that i wanna focus on my own style, i'm trying new things like academies choreos and even trying to work out to better my sharpness and stuff, but i'm on level 3 lol, i feel pretty confident performing by now, and i'm one of those cases that was on level 1 at some point in my life.

      This is an exercice. I’ve performed several times in front of people for many years. It took me repetition to finally get comfortable. Each time you dance in front of people, exercice yourself to be comfortable, chill, confident, restrain yourself to stop wanting running away. And think about that: you are the one that offer them a show, don’t look at yourself, try to communicate with your art towards them, not towards you. At a certain point, you’ll feel comfortable. I hope it can help. 😊

I was honestly skeptical of this concept when I watched this video way back when it was published….. but I have gotten significantly better from where I was as a dancer, teacher, and artist from the beginning of this year to now…. Thanks STEEZY. Question. I am often so busy at my school it’s hard for me to find a 30 min session out of the day to dance. However, every 25 mins of studying, I take a 5-10 min dance break to clear my mind. Since I’m studying for 8-10 hours a day, that accumulates to at least 80 hours. Even though those dance practice sessions are broken up in segments, do they still count for practicing 30 mins everyday?

    • @PeevesMarvelous
      @PeevesMarvelous Před 5 lety +39

      Don't worry about the minute, the really thing you must to do is The Consistency.
      You can do 5 min dance practice everyday, because like they say,"Practice make Permanent". You train your muscle to remember. So it's no problem to do 5 min a day, the important one is The Consistency.
      Ps: But if there are people practice 30 mins a day, he/she will be better than people who practice 5 min a day, right?

Practicing about 2-4 hours a day when performances/auditions are coming up and having frequent periods of zero dancing for weeks on end. Now I'd say I'm at a comfortable intermediate level. I'm heading towards advanced in some aspects and falling short of intermediate in others. But by now I have gotten a taste of what it means to be a "good" dancer. Magically looking good sometimes without having to clean and just knowing exactly how to do a move just from seeing it. It's nice to see progress. I've been a self taught dancer until a couple of weeks ago but now I'm finally going to classes. Can't wait to see even more progress!

    Having a level bar really helps me. It makes it easy to make goals and see where I need to be. Thanks for doing it that way.
    Also, I've never danced but from spending a lot of time on music I already knew certain things like how to detect and stay on beat. Would that put me at one or two?

    When they said "It takes 6 months to go one step upwards" I knew that they know what they are talking about. Many people that are fake teachers say that you can become a very good dancer in a short while, and I know it's bs. I have some expierience with fake teachers, because Im an artist that studied from the very basics for over a year now and seen a lot of people saying "Use this simple trick to draw like Leonardo Da Vinci in a week!" and I figured It's similar with dancing :'D

    I taught myself how to dance on CZcams after I lost my singing voice at 16. I’m definitely a “comfortable intermediate” but I do want to start performing at shows so I want to move to level 4. I just realized that I don’t practice nearly enough; I literally do that big burst of practice once a month. Granted I just became a doctor, but thanks for helping me realize that it’s better to shorter practices more often.

    Since you are a dancing based channel, can you perhaps do a video on kpop dancing? Kpop dancing is very, very popular these days, and their choreographers are people you frequently mention or feature on your channel (Sienna, Keone Madrid, Kyle etc)
    I'd really appreciate if you could make something like that! Also I'm pretty sure it would get more views than your average videos cause in the history of kpop, it has never been bigger on a global level, and kpop dance is a crucial part of it all. Hopefully you'll take it into consideration!

    So I’m almost 40 years old; I’ve always loved to dance and danced as a child throughout HS. But that was also 100 years ago. So I’ve been doing a ton of research and I think I’m ready to start taking classes.
    But here’s my biggest question-
    Am I too old to start over like this?
    Have you seen more “mature” adults take your classes and succeed? If so, I’d love to hear more about that.
    Last question is, where should I start with regards to classes? I’ve been on your website a ton of times. So I’m aware of the many classes you offer. But I was hoping you could help me narrow it down a bit.
    Thank you so much in advance and I look forward to your response.
