That interaction with the lady who let you into her home and broke bread with you is something I keep coming back to and is probably near the top of my favorite moments in this whole series. If there was ever a moment that captured the essence of Mr. Rogers' neighborly kindness, she had it and likely still does
Hey Ken, as a past native from Pittsburgh, where is a great place that another young black person can live? I am moving there from NYC due to a great job offer in the city...I really do not want a place as busy as Brooklyn just need a change from that pace...any suggestions...
@@matthewgarcia1499 Currently I live in Virginia Beach which is a great City for raising children (I'm not sure if you have any) It's very diverse and the weather is beautiful
Thanks Ken! I don’t have any at the moment However the job is downtown Pittsburgh Hence my question was directed towards there... Virginia Beach seems nice but I did the coastal living when I lived 3 years in Long Beach CA ...
Hey Dean, My family and I loved having you interview my mother (Filomena, owner of Groceria Merante) and love what you've done and what you're doing. Keep it up! - If ya get a chance think about doing an episode on Mt. Lebanon ;)
You've got a bright future in documentaries if that's what you want to do. This Pittsburgh series is gorgeous, moving, reflective, interesting. Nice work.
@@DeanBog i lived in oakland for 3 yrs in the mid nineties, on chesterfield rd by Carlow college. I worked at the Original, while going to the art institute. the guy you interviewed was right. when i was there, there was Kunst bakery, alot of mom and pop stores, some cool record shops all down forbes ave. i visited pittsburgh for the first time since 1997, last year, and went to forbes ave, and it was all verizon stores and shit like that. at least the Original is still kicking, but we opted to hang on the south side most of the time we were there. awesome city though, sometimes i regret leaving!!!!
The vibe and kindness of the student population and the people in the neighborhood were huge contributing factors in our willingness to pay out-of-state tuition and send our daughter across the country to attend Pitt. All the people of Pittsburgh who I've interacted during my many visits remind me of Seattle 20 years ago before Amazon came and took over. I hope the student population supports the small businesses in Oakland as they are important contributors to the individuality and liveability of the neighborhood. Merante is an absolute gem. I can't believe how varied the selection was in such a small space. Being from the West Coast, the small Mexican grocery nearby is also greatly appreciated. Now that my daughter is moving out of the dorms into an apartment in South Oakland, she'll be a regular at the small groceries. Great videography!
Thank you for mentioning Susan Hicks. She was my advisor and I had a meeting with her shortly before she passed away tragically, wonderful woman. Always good to see people keeping her spirit alive 💕
I'm glad you stopped into Groceria Merante and spoke to Filomena, she is one of the sweetest people I've ever met. A lot of people don't realize (non-local pitt students particularly), that South Oakland was one of Pittsburgh's biggest Italian neighborhoods. Dan Marino, for example.
Dean- thank you for making this! I’m a pastor that works to serve Oakland but I work closely with the South Oakland folks. Seeing Rita and the beans she harvested from Frazier Farms made my heart sing!! She’s a gem. I think you captured really well how much the students profoundly love South Oakland, but also how they’re unsure how to take care of it or show their love. I’ll be sharing this with my colleagues- you have done us quite an honor! Thank you!
You are very talented, unique, and compelling. There is a hidden gift in your serious lens (commentary, for example, on intergenerational wisdom). I showed up to learn about South Oakland, but I was moved deeply by the exchange between you and the woman when she prepared and served you the food. You captured a precious vulnerability in human relationships.
Thanks for this... I spent and spend a lot of time in Oakland and I lived in South Oakland for about 5 years. I actually have a lot of old footage from back then if you ever decide to do a follow up (although it's in standard def). I wonder if you could address the fact that NO buildings/homes/apartments ever come up for sale north of the Blvd of the Allies... it's almost like maybe 3-4 people own the all and just sit on them? I peruse Zillow all the time and no luck, just the MEGA apartment complexs sell a few units here and there. The Catherdral is my favorite building in the world... I love how it's just this giant tall beautiful piece of gothic architecture with NO other tall buildings in sight.
Gardening is superb in Pittsburgh even though we don't see much and a long season of the sun. I like gardening here bc i garden on one of Pittsburgh's gentle rolling hills. With the exception of "the drought" that we are now coming out of it rains here all the time. In Texas which I love I had to water my garden 5x's/day. The soil here has the possibility to be great if you unlock the nutrient. Pittsburgh also has a FREE clinic on the Southside that offers medical evaluations and medicines!
I agree with the comments about Shenley Park - it truly is the best treasure of Pittsburgh. I went to Pitt. Also, I just loved Carnegie Museum and Concert Hall - in the oakland area
This is dope. Just graduated from Pitt in April. Stuck around in Pittsburgh but I live 20 minutes outside the city now cus I wanted to get away from the city lifestyle for a bit. Your Hill District video popped up in my recommended feed for whatever reason as I don’t watch videos on Pittsburgh at all. But I went straight to this one. I’ll now be checking the rest out cus this is pretty quality stuff.
i use to go to merante as a kid. those women over there were such great warm people. i could walk in 5 minutes from my house on sample. I've lived in nyc for 26 years but I'll always be an Oakland boy!
Live in Ross! Man you have some killer potential. Your cinematography is wild, and your little touches of comedy and personality really makes it interesting. Keep what you're doing, and im gonna check out some of your other videos!
Hi Dean....My name is Jim and I grew up in Penn Hills......I currently live just south of Baltimore, MD. Your video popped up on my CZcams listing and I watched this video. Just wanted to say I thought you did a great job on this video. I will watch the rest of your videos When I have the chance. Thanks so much for the time you put in this video. I look forward to learning more about the different Pittsburgh neighborhoods!
I made a comment on the downtown episode 6 I think but I just want you to know I do like your coverage. I grew up in West Virginia and moved to Pittsburgh in 1979, I like Pittsburgh a lot. thank you for showing me the different neighborhoods
Dude!! Don't give yourself such a hard time this was so interesting to watch and very aesthetically pleasing! (Also thank you SO much for getting Merante in there)
Oakland has a special place in my heart as a Pitt alumnus. I think you captured the essence of what makes it so unique, but more importantly the changes it has faced over the years (some destructive, some good). We need to keep this in mind more then ever I feel, especially as Pitt aims to move forward with their "Master Plan" which I fear may just further harm the community of South O. On a more positive note, thank you for your coverage of Schenley Park. Its endless greens in a city of concrete is something magical, and means so very much to the students of Pitt and the residents of the area. People who haven't lived there don't really understand how awesome of a place Schenley is, and how much it comes to mean to you.
I lived across the street from where you left your bike from 2016-19 for less than $350 a month, I'd call that pretty affordable. Newman/One-stop are legendary. Nice video!
Beautiful video. So fun for me to watch, since I graduated Pitt in 2004, and moved away and miss it :( Great mix of interviews, insight, beautiful shots, and whimsy. (Love the wake and bake moment, haha!)
Nice Video...I have lived all over this beautiful country. Originally from NJ...after high school I moved to Pittsburgh and went to a travel business school called The Wilma Boyd School(1996). Since then I have lived just about everywhere but have returned to Pittsburgh twice. I am currently living in Oklahoma City now...and in a few days moving back to Pittsburgh. The city calls me lol. Thanks for making this video. Shout out to the lady that cooked you that good ole soulfood.

Dean, have you visited the "Shrine of the Blessed Mother" AKA "Our Lady of the Parkway" in South Oakland? They usually have candles burning there at night. I always thought that was a really cool hidden thing in Oakland.
