Creating A Buck Bed On A Small Property

  • When creating habitat for the whitetails on our properties, we try our best to recreate what the deer are doing naturally. Whether we are creating travel routes, doe bedding areas or individual buck beds, we let the deer tell us what they like. In order for a buck to bed down in a particular location, he needs to feel absolutely secure. Safety is his top priority. In this video we will show you how we make individual bedding locations throughout our properties to give local bucks multiple bullet proof bedding options during the hunting season.

    I totally agree about overhead cover. I have noticed this in my area. They bed under pines.

    One more thing. I think it is awesome that you have your son out there with you. I also have 2 sons little older but would always take them with me when possible. I know way to many hunters that always leave home for the woods and forget the most important thing their kids.

      You said it, our kids are by far the the most important thing. They look up to us and just want to make us proud by doing what we’re doing. My son loves to help and I love having him out here. Even though his favorite thing to do is cut all of the new growth down in our bedding areas 🤦🏼‍♂️ haha oh well. It’s fun watching him learn. Hopefully he appreciates it because I’m Gona need him to help get me to the stand one day!
      Good luck to you and your boys this year!

    They might like a My Pillow or two in there as well. Maybe a small fridge stocked with browse brew beer, a few bowls of redosier dogwood chips and a TV with the Animal channel playing. A deer bachelor pad.

    In my mind, this seems almost like when creating a ground blind out of natural stuff. Thick cover, clean quiet entrances and exits. Canopy to keep the rain off your head and a nice log to sit on or lean against. Escape routes = shooting lanes. great video - thanks

    Another very nicely done video. Keep them coming. I have done similar and agree with you it’s fun to do, no guarantee it’s picked up by a buck, but if it is then awesome. Only out time and labor, but time well spent in woods with the family.

    • @whitetailevolution
      @whitetailevolution  Před 3 lety +1

      Exactly! Making individual beds is not the first thing I would be doing to a property but if you have other pieces in place and have 30 minutes to kill, grab a rake and a shovel and make a few beds! If they get picked up by a couple deer throughout the season then it was 30 minutes well spent.

    They like overhead cover on my property in WV. My big buck one the property beds in a extremely thick briar and bramble thicket where a huge 300+ oak tree fell a few years back right thru the middle of the thicket. He was bedding in middle of all that junk right underneath of a huge crotch where that huge tree trunk had split off into 2 huge trunks about 2 feet in diameter. Which was about 3 ft. Off the ground above him...I've also sat 30 yards. Above that same spot and watched a doe tuck her 2 fawns to bed in that same thicket in 2 spots about 20 feet apart.. then she walked over another 30 ft. And squealed in under a cluster of junk and grapevines 30 yards straight below me. With nothing between us but big open woods on a bank. I looked for 10 min. Through 10 power binoculars b4 I could find her. And every time after that for 2.5 hours...all I could see of her was one eyeball and one ear ..so yea.....deer do like pulling the blanket up over their head where I live.........maybe not in big flat ag land...,...but in the hill country of WV they sure do.....the big buck I talked about earlier had 8 beds in that thicket in a spot about 80 yards long and 30 yards wide.....4 was in shit a rabbit would have trouble going in... 3 was in the open wood beside it about 15 ft. Away. And 1 was just in edge of thicket where starts to open up....the only way I could access the one under the big fallen tree was to bypass it by 40 ft. Climb up on the huge 30 some inch trunk. Walk up the fallen tree trunk and jump down thru the huge crotch into his bed....he's still up there but a 10 pt. This year. And still carries the quarter size scar on the top of his right shoulder where I blew the perfect bow shot last oct.26 2022 at 5:15 pm.all from misjudging the distant.....my trailcam pic. Last week like Jan. 6th 2024 reviewed that he may have lost or seriously injured his right eye fighting...

    • @whitetailevolution
      @whitetailevolution  Před 3 lety +1

      I’ll put a few out to see if I can catch the deer using them. One of the clips in his video was a small buck using a bed we made last year. It’s the clip of the deer behind / under all the vines.
      Most years, we push a majority of the deer, especially the bucks, off the property after the hunting season to enjoy the property with the family / work on habitat. After Labor Day I let the property sit and the deer filter back in. During the hunting season I’ll probably keep those areas camera free but until then I’ll put cameras up to see which which beds they are using throughout the off-season.

  • @kurtpearson8597
    @kurtpearson8597 Před 3 lety +2

    I relate buck bedding to food/doe position. Seems random to place them simply in the center without considering where the does are first. I’m worried the cart is in front of the horse.

    • @whitetailevolution
      @whitetailevolution  Před 3 lety

      As do I for the most part. There are food plots about 70-100 yards away from this particular bed in three directions and a few separate doe bedding areas (placed next to the food source) about 50 yards away from this bed. The doe beds are in between this bed and the food source. I didn’t label it, but in the drone shot at the start of the video the does love to bed at the top of the pond next to the green food plot. This video was more to show how to we created this particular bed and what went into that.
      From what I have seen, does will bed as close to food as they can long as it’s somewhat thick and they are not pressured, they move further away / into thicker areas as pressure increases. Bucks on the other hand are going to pick the safest location possible from the start. Safety is their top priority. I do my best to give both bucks and does what they want when creating habitat.
      Thanks for the comment!

    • @kurtpearson8597
      @kurtpearson8597 Před 3 lety +1

      @@whitetailevolution Yes, this is my thinking as well! Food draws the does in close and bucks find safe spots back from that movement. (New subscriber, you might have covered this in previous vids)

    seems like a fantastic waste of time. creating bedding habit, areas, etc. sure. Trying to make a specific bed for a buck to use? waste of effort.

    • @tgauge44
      @tgauge44 Před 3 lety +1

      Never a waste of time spending time in the woods with your kids!! And you never know...maybe a buck does bed there. An added bonus. :)

    • @whitetailevolution
      @whitetailevolution  Před 3 lety +5

      As Roland said, any time spent in the woods with your family isn't a waste of time. And to your point, we don't focus on these individual beds until we have the overall bedding habitat / area created. But once that is done and you have 30 minutes of free time, creating individual beds will make that location more attractive to the deer. Does that mean that each one of the beds we make will be used by deer? No. But the same can be said about a lot of the improvements we put in, nothing is guaranteed. All we are doing is increasing the chances. The more work you do, the greater your likelihood of holding deer will be.
      Good luck this season!

      @@whitetailevolution I just bought a piece of property in October that lacks bedding and stem count. I watched deer come from my neighbors non stop. This was a problem during season bc the does were on my neighbors just after day break.The result, no bucks cruising. I have to increase bedding and stem count. Improvements are NEVER a waste of time imo, Great video!
