This Hymn, called Standing Hymn, was based on the prelude of a previous Orthodox Christian Hymn dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
In the year 626 AD, while Byzantine Emperor Heraclius (not Justinian) was leading a campaign of the Byzantine army against the Persians, Constantinople was suddenly besieged by the Avars, who were people of the steppes.
Aware of the absence of the army, the Avars rejected any proposal for a truce and on August 6 captured the Byzantine church Lady of Vlacherna, dedicated to Virgin Mary.
On the night of August 7-8, the Avars were preparing for the final attack against Constantinople, including from the sea, from the side of the Golden Horn where the city’s defenses were weakest.
The entrance to the Golden Horn was protected from enemy ships with a huge chain that was lowered to allow friendly ships to go through, so an attack from the sea was not considered probable and the city’s walls were not as strong on this side.
The Avars used a very large fleet of canoes to pass under the Golden Horn chain, in order to attack Constantinople from its weakest side.
Byzantine Patriarch Sergius was going around the walls of the city, holding the icon of Virgin Mary of Vlacherna and encouraged the few defenders to resist.
In the evening, the people of Constantinople gathered in the church of Agia Sophia and prayed to Virgin Mary for the salvation of the city.
That night, a terrible tornado destroyed the Avar’s canoe fleet, while a counterattack by the defenders caused huge losses to them.
The storm was attributed to divine intervention by both the Byzantines and the Avars, who were forced to break the siege and withdraw back to their lands.
On August 8, Constantinople was saved from the greatest threat in its history.
The people, wanting to celebrate their salvation, which they attributed to the intervention of the Virgin Mary, gathered at the Church of Lady of Vlacherna. Then, according to tradition, the crowd standing sang in gratitude this Hymn, (a variation of the original) that became known "Akathistos Hymnos" (Standing Hymn) to the Virgin Mary, attributing the victory nd the salvation of Constantinople to her, calling her "the champion general".
To this day, Virgin Mary is considered to be the patron of the Hellenic Armed Forces.

That is why they trusted the same stupid symbols to save the city from the Ottoman siege but that time no tornado or anything like that happened. Believing in nonsense to save a beautiful city from the attackers will never help. No religion, no superstition but only will of the people combined with scientific methods and well-organized defense (plus equipment) could save it.

    • @FLORATOSOTHON
      @FLORATOSOTHON Před rokem +24

@@TheTimeDetective42 The mainstream view is that it was the adaptation of an older hymn by Romanus the melody creator, a famous hymn writer of the period and that it was written that night.
Some say that it must have been an older hymn, since it would be difficult to write the hymn within hours.
IIMAO, converting the words of an existing hymn to fit the situation should not have been a problem for an experienced hymn writer and this has been done many times in recent times, especially with Greek WW2 songs, that converted, within hours top song hits of the time, to fit the occasion by making fun of the Italians and Mussolini, based on the original music.
As for the crowd, they didn't have to know the hymn before hand, all they had to do is repeat what the priests were singing, after all it is a very short hymn by Orthodox standards.

Roma! Greek is just a language and a culture not a nationality. Those who speak Greek are the remnants of the Roman Empire because the Romans were Aegean Greek speakers. They came from Troy and returned to their origins around 350AD. The Latins are also Greek speakers from 1600BC, but their Lacedaemonian Greek was fixed by the alphabet brought to Italy by the Colonist Latinos (youngest son of Odysseus of Ithaca) in around 1200BC.

It is the original language of the Holy Bible cause the majority of people in the ancient Western world chose to speak it cause of its brilliance. So, in order to spread the word of God, they chose the most common spoken language of the era. Sadly, lots of religious institutions in our days forget the purpose of the religious scripts. And they insist to preach it in ancient long forgotten languages, which not a lot of people can speak or understand anymore. So the word of God. Is not truly spread to the world anymore.

greek was roman citizen and refered to themselves as rhomaii just like the american refer to themselves as americans of course.
difference is that greek was 1500 years roman and even today refer to themselves sometimes as roman but americans have not even reached 250 years and some live less than 100 years in america and selfidentify as "american".
the greek ruled the roman empire for almost 1100 years and the smaller the empire got, the less nongreek remained in the empire, hence it became more and more an ethnic state than an empire and even the last emperor constantine palaiologos refered to himself and the roman as descenends of greek in his last speech in the hagia sophia before the barbarian took the holy city of christendom in 1453.

@@antoniofarinaccio541 What are you some kind of Solipsist? What proof do you have that it is all an illusion? That's ridiculous! Plenty of things exist without me making them, without us making them. We certainly have common experiences even if we may perceive them in a slightly different way. There is objective reality independent of our perceptions. Scientific evidence, empirical observations, and the consensus of multiple observers confirm the existence of an external reality that exists regardless of individuals' interpretations. You are ignoring the vast body of empirical evidence supporting the existence of the physical world. Scientific discoveries, technological advancements, and the predictability of natural phenomena all attest to the reality of the external world. That cannot all be an illusion, because we can prove it isn't. With regard to taking action In the realm of action and decision-making, relying solely on subjective interpretations of reality without acknowledging objective facts can lead to impractical or harmful outcomes. As for taking action: Those who take action and make decisions, relying on their subjective interpretations of reality without considering objective facts can lead to massive f*ck-ups! Your argument is self-defeating, because it denies the existence of any other minds or external realities, rendering communication, cooperation, and shared experiences meaningless, but that is not the case. Your assertion that reality is an illusion and that people can create their own "truths" undermines ethical principles, like the principle of moral accountability. Without objective reality there can be no society and without society the individual human is doomed. So who is the cynic? Seems like a case of the pot calling the kettle black to me.
It is equally important not to go of the deep end in the other direction. This idea that we can just all believe in a sky god and sing kumbaya without any empirical evidence of that sky-god's existence is equally ridiculous. There is no good evidence for god and only good evidence against him, considering that all the claims of Genesis about life, the earth and the universe have been shown to be incorrect and fallacious at best.

It's a shame what happened to the Byzantine Empire. Moral decadence, clerical and nobility corruption, Caesaro-Papism helped a lot in the fall of this great Empire. Unfortunately, not every Empire and glory lasts forever. The same can be seen in post-medieval Europe with the decline of the Renaissance(What was reborn? Huh.. paganism) , which made Western Christians more tepid, tolerant of evil, weak, seeking their own redemption on Earth (excellent pagan life), absolutism, decadence of the nobility and royal courts (it was at this time that the figure of Fat Kings, Gluttons, Adulterers, etc. emerged). Paganism destroys everything wherever it goes.

St Sophia was in Christian Constantinople for 1100 years until 1453 AD. The Muslim interlopers have held the city for 570 years. The great church will be Christian again before very long. Islam can no longer prevent global scrutiny and criticism and it already collapsing among younger, educated Muslims in places like Turkey and Iran. The religion is facing real censure for the first time, so Christian values might well undergo a revival in the Middle East..
Indeed from 1918 to 1922 English, French and Italian forces occupied the city - the first time it had been under Christian rule since 1453. They should never have 'returned' it to Ataturk's Turkish republic. The UK and France easily had the power to retain the 3 percent of Turkey that lies in Europe and which includes Constantinople. It is a great shame and rather unforgivable that they did not do so.

No way, christianity and trinity is a belief, i share my respect and but i never belive in. I don'twant to offend you. Christianity is superfictious - partially like judaism and islam, judaism and islam is less fictious, my opinion - we, some turks - not all, know very well that Jesus, himself, historical Jesus dont comply with the Jesus as he was narrated in 4 canonic bibles, and he is never existed, Jesus of bible is fictious super hero. Jesus of Bibles is not from Nazereeth, for example, is created out of Apollonius of Tyana. Christianity born in this* land (*i live in Anatolia) and will end in this land. Time will reveal more facts and maybe scripture beneath soil. ;) And so, why not 'Tengri' is new neon for our youth, 'Christ Salvatore' is old fashion and fake. :D hahahaha Zito Tengri! Lol!

Why they returned the city is a mystery having occupied it at the end of first world war. The treaty of lussane of 1923 which finally ended first word war completes 100 years. The treaty of severres od 1920 never came into force which was much in favour of Constantinople. We pray God that the city is restored to christians at the earliest.

I am a Turk. I am not a Muslim. I am just a Turk. But history has taught us Turks that empires are founded only with blood and weapons. Empires rise with pain and blood. Don't forget this.Today, 21,000,000 people live in Istanbul, only 1200 of them are Greeks, and the number of Christians is only 18,000. Your imagination is wide. We have been fighting for 30 years for our brother Azerbaijan to take back its lands and we have not given up. This being the case, you cannot take Istanbul without the world burning and millions of people dying in the war. I see you don't know us.

Greetings from Macedonia, the birthplace of the great Justinian and his uncle Justin (born near the capital of Skopje).
East Roman Empire, the same as its western part, was a diverse multiethnic space where many languages and people coexisted in harmony and peace under constant pressure from outside invasions. It is very wrong to say it was Greek or belonged only to some other specific nation. Greek language along with Latin was the lingua franca of that time world and was widely used in the same way English is nowadays. Especially in the complex and large political structures like the Roman empire (make a parallel of EU today).
The heritage and achievements of the Holy Roman Empire last even today. Just mentioning some of the named Justinian - the unpreceded architecture of Aja Sofia and hundreds of churches in Balkan and Italy (but also many Ottoman monuments which continued a similar style), the establishment of Roman law, etc.

Byzantines were proud. Byzantines were rich. Their walls stood proud upon the Bosphorus.
But there's no wall high enough to stop hunger (the wave of Mehmet the Great), nor to impede treason (sack of 1421 by the Crusade).
They stood. They fell. They're a reminder that no matter how rich, no matter how powerful, the days of a civilization are always numbered.
Remember the last cry of the last Emperor of Bizancio, as he ran with his horse against the enemy... and fell, to nevermore gaze upon his magnificent city.

    • @ownpetard8379
      @ownpetard8379 Před rokem

Mehmet the Great was on the verge of being strangled to death by his men when a breach - likely a treason ; an open portal was found - was made in the defenses.
Never heard of a sack of 1421. The Sack of Constantinople was 1204 by the Crusaders. The victory of Mehmet was over a hollow of a city. Mehmet allowed the Jews of Spain to settle in the city to help fill it up and restart commerce.
Gunpowder would have eventually ruined the defenses of Constantinople. And the Hungarian's cannon did a great deal of damage. But Mehmet's victory was not overwhelming at all, especially considering that his forces were tens of thousands, and the defenders were perhaps 10,000 total.

Anybody ever noticed this was the movie Theodora slave empress made-in-italy back around 1954.. very nice very nice reenactment of what happened with Justinian and Theodora.. the colors of very very vivid in this restored movie.. Has Hollywood ever made a full-featured movie on aspect the Byzantine empire? Did they even make anything in the fall of Constantinople? The longest-running empire in human history. Don't expect much from Hollywood maybe another Gladiator movie or another holocaust of the Jewish people movie. Come to think of it has Hollywood even considered a movie of The Armenian genocide /Holocaust. Not even that was ever considered.. I heard a while ago that Turkish government would retaliate one way or another as far back after WW1 If Hollywood would ever have anything negative against Turkqie. We know that China has also a long-standing stranglehold on Hollywood also for the same reason. Neither of them like bad press
