    He Rhett and Philip,
    As a bassplayer myself I realy liked this vid. Finaly some great bass contend. As for the pedal choises, here's my view on them.
    -The JHS Colorbox was a nobrainer. That thing covers so much ground on the dirt. From OD untill fuzz.
    -The JHS Bender, well, what can I say. I've got a love/hate for fuzzes on bass. I realy like them. But there is 1 realy big downer for me for playing with them live. The one thing that realy helps to cut through a bandmix is the attack of the bass sound. That realy first attack thats just a bit louder (its 1 louder) then the rest. With a fuzz there is this compression where you lose that first attack. A blend on a fuzz will help. So I thing that alot of "guitar" fuzzes without a blend will cause that the bass will get lost in the bandmix.
    -The Cali compressor is just a great choice for bass. That thing realy works!
    -The Strymon Flint, I just love it. I realy love tremolo on my bass. And I dont have a reverb jet but would love to use it. The Deco would also be a good choice. But the dirt side is already coverd with the Colorbox. But the delay side is now missing a bit. As you didnt choose for the Volante.
    -As a result of choosing the Nightsky, you end up with 2 reverbs. But I do get it why you choose the Nightsky. That pedal realy is a moodmaker. Its a instrument on its own.
    As for placing the pedals, I would place the Nightsky on the front row. Because I think that the switches must be in direct place to control them in live playing, like tempo and stuff. The Cali would be better on the back row as a always on pedal.

    I have my DIY pedalboard with mostly "old school" type pedals - Dunlop Cry Baby Wah, Volume pedal, Poly tuner, JHS Sweet Tea (combination of Angry Charlie for a Marshall sound and the Ibanez Tube Screamer for a more classic rock sound), a DynoMyRoto (combines flange, Reverb, and chorus to emulate a Leslie), a DigiTech mini Jamman looper, and a mini-looper. I cannot use the loopers live, but they are fun for practicing solos at home. They are mounted on a metal frame Pedal Train with a Voodoo power supply. I love it, EXCEPT, that damned thing weighs a metric ton, especially in the hardshell travel case. I replaced the bag case because my pedals kept sliding off the board whenever I transported it. As I get older I am finding that simpler (and lighter) is better.

  • @Sailor_Man_Music
    @Sailor_Man_Music Před 2 lety

    I love the Tone Bender my wife it’s the way it sounds compared to other fuzzes I have. I think what you mean by electrical is that the damn the is staticky and it sounds like an old mono stereo system. If you play through a distorted amp with that pedal ya forget it. It’s way crazy. Honestly my favorite fuzz is the JHS Cheese 🧀 pedal. So many different voice the love tone pedal that this pedal is derived from, is a fuzz face topology. With different voicing and clippings it cleans up depending on the setting like a fuzz face. The Tone Bender does not clean up well. If your looking for a lot of depth the Bender works. If your looking for a brighter sounding fuzz that does the Hendrix thing or even more of a buzz tone sound. Without using a buzz tone then fuzz face is the best option.

    It is great to see a bass board. I am coming back to bass and the only pedal I had before was a flanger. This board would be awesome to hook up to my bass, fingers crossed. Thanks for doing this video.

  • @marcofioravanti4176
    @marcofioravanti4176 Před 2 lety +1

    Entertaining episode! Interesting - and slightly unusual pedal decisions. Affordable, still quite pricey.
    Wait, what? There is a slot for a dreamy space reverb? But no Chorus, Flanger, Envelope Filter, Octaver or Looper? (Ok, I did dig Fuzz into Nightsky.)
    At the end Sweetwater might have thought:
    "Oh no, it´s gonna be even more expensive! Why does he do that?" 😀 CZcams Gold!
    My advice for a small bass board would be f.e. an "EBS Micro Bass 3", which covers a mute, a tuner, preamp, eq, compressor, drive, fx loop and DI out in one box and go for the rest from there, maybe a TC Plethora X5 or an EHX Superego plus etc.

  • @aj81ds

    I've played guitar off/on most of my life but started learning bass not to long ago. I would have liked to see Phil build strictly a bass board and a separate production board as I don't see myself using the Reverb or delay on bass. Instead I would have wanted a chorus pedal with a blend knob. I do realize though that this is a guitar channel and you have to please everyone so maybe Phil can make a bass board on his channel. Right now for bass I use a tried and true Sans Amp bass driver di and a TC Electronic SpectraComp but my dream comp would be this Cali76 for bass. I also want to get a Chorus pedal with a blend knob to satisfy my 80s itch. That being this was a good video to learn about other pedals I wouldn't normally think twice about. Also, I loved the new Noah Guthrie album that you and Phil played on. I'm mostly a punk rock guy but I really enjoyed the guitar and bass work on this album.

    Phil's a step ahead of most bass players I've ever played with, which was always like a pedal or two just kinda hanging out in front of them somewhere. On? Off? Who can say? And then there was the one guy who played bass and was classically trained on piano- he brought a full rack case.

    • @methyod
      @methyod Před rokem

      why do you need pedals for bass for like 95% of musical genres? i have a clip on tuner and an always on compressor in the effects loop, and even that feels like overkill half the time.

    • @timrizzo3941
      @timrizzo3941 Před rokem

      @@methyod yeah, it's this kind of lack of curiosity I'm talking about. No one *needs* pedals, but they can spark creativity and add new timbres and textures. Given the bass's role in most music, there are a number of pedals that are definitely right out, but then there are things like the surprisingly deep and varied world of bass overdrives many of which sound fantastic to my ear. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. I guess I've never understood how most bass players I've played with are not even interested in experimenting with their sound.

    You said you like outing rigs together for people, I could use some help. I’ve always wanted to learn to play the bass but was to busy with work and life. Now I that I’m unable to work I really want to learn but only my wife is working. Ive been trying to barter for a bass but no luck, I’m pretty handy with solider so if you have any junk parts I can try and fix them up if you don’t mind sending to me.

    First pedal should’ve been a clean blend pedal like OBNE signal blender, boss ls2, EHX Tri mixer or Goodwood bass interfacer

    Great vid. As a bass player of many years I can say my favorite hands down for fuzz / boost is none other than EHX Bass Big Muff. A very interesting sounding fuzz and has some useful tweaks for bass players. Cuts live and sounds good recorded as well. The bender sounds awesome though, definitely its own thing. Also, I’ve never been a fan of using compressors with guitar or bass, but I have to say I really dig the sound of that series 3. Might have to grab one!

    Build a small pedal board...that costs you $2500... Cali = $250 ColorBox = ~$400, Collider = $350...etc. etc. The JHS S3 are cheap, but all the others are going to dent your wallet big time. Even all JHS pedals is going to be ~$500.00 or 1k if you throw in the colorbox.

      Sounds about right, we're talking pro level equipment. Do you know what a pro level bow for violin costs? You can get one at a time and get skilled with each piece as you save for the next.
