  • @Berglundish
    @Berglundish Před 3 lety +32

    The song is about a soldier in WW1 who steps on a landmine and has his arms and legs blown off. Also he loses his sight, hearing and his ability to talk. Essentially he is trapped in his own body with only his thoughts.
    He figures out a way to communicate to the doctors using morse code by tapping his head and he asks them to kill him as he does not want to live the rest of his life like that. The nurse wants to kill him however the army generals stop her and have him kept alive locked away in a room.
    The band had the idea originally for the song as just a living brain in a jar however discovered a movie called Johnny Got His Gun (based on the book of the same name) which was the story of the soldier. The band wrote the song around that story. Pieces of the movie were used in the bands music video which is what you have just watched

    • @angelo8304

    • @nightthornkvala94132
      @nightthornkvala94132 Před 3 lety +5

      Actually, Martin, he didn't step on a landmine (song lyric got it wrong), a bomb dropped on him. The explosion took all four limbs and destroyed his face. The soldier (Timothy Bottoms) goes between memory, fantasy, and hallucinations, not being able to tell one from the other. No, the movie has long stretches with no action, so pass it by if that's all you're looking for, but it is very thought provoking.

    • @Kaylakaze
      @Kaylakaze Před 3 lety

      The landmine part is better because that makes it feel more related to 'Nam which was far more relevant at the time.

    The song is the inside of a mind of someone who lost all his limbs in war, and was being used as an experiment by doctors. He was alive but couldn’t talk or do anything besides think, and this is supposed to be a depiction of his thoughts and how he just wants it to end and die.

      I'm not sure "experiment" is 100% fair. Is that in the movie or book?
      Do you mean an experiment just to see if they could keep him alive?
      From my understanding of the video, yes, his body was destroyed beyond belief and yes he was being kept alive entirely through artificial medical means, but I don't think they were doing additional experiments or testing on him just for the experiment sake..?

    Trivia: I'm sure someone must have mentioned this already, but Metallica tried to negotiate for the rights to show movie clips in their music video, and the rights holders were asking for too much money, so they just bought the rights to the entire movie and gave permission to themselves to put it in the video.
    The original copyright-holders were being idiots. Many kids learned about the existence of this movie because of the Metallica video.

    • @madmex123
      @madmex123 Před 11 měsíci

      This isn’t entirely true. Metallica bought the rights to the movie after the video was produced and after paying royalties several times. They figured it would be cheaper than paying royalties every time the video was shown.

    The song is a testament to the "absolute" horrors of WAR! Kids today are completely desensatized to the "reality" that is war! Video games and Netflix are illusions of war. Real WAR is terrifying and madness! Its the saturation point of mans inhumanity toward one another times 10! The sounds will haunt you your entire life,the smells will never leave you. War breaks strong men and women and it changes them forever! They are scarred for life having lived through it. Pray for the veterans who return missing limbs and organs and broken minds and pray you never have to expierence the carnage that is WAR!

    The scenes in this video are from the 1970's movie, "Johnny Got His Gun" and the associated book, originally written in 1938. Johnny was a soldier in World War One. He is caught in an explosion that leaves him with no arms, no legs, no face, no ears. He cannot speak, hear, or see - has no sense of time or where he is, and is fed through a tube and breathing through a respirator.
    I have always interpreted the cut scenes within the song as what is happening to Johnny in the real world.
    The moments of the song where Johnny is "thinking out loud" are his conscious mind, and James Hetfields voice is his subconscious mind. This was triggered - for me - by Johnny's thought, "I don't know if I'm alive and dreaming, or dead and remembering?"
    From that point on, the music builds and builds, which - again, to me - signaled the growing conflict between the two sides of Johnny's mind as he dips further and further into insanity. By the time Kirk Hammett's guitar solo hits, (and hits hard), I've always pictured that as the final "battle" between Johnny's conscious and subconscious mind, with the final "S.O.S. Help me..." mantra at the conclusion signifying that Johnny's mind is the same as his body, reduced to "one" singular, autonomic thought.
    Nothing else of him remains from that point forward. Johnny has gone, and only the breathing corpse remains until he would die of old age.
    At the end, the crowd singing "Keep the Home Fires Burning" symbolizes how society went on and forgot about him, (and the veterans in general).
    If you listen to this song from that perspective, you will be bawling by the end.

    This song was inspired by a movie where a soldier was blown up and he had no sight, hearing, smell or feeling. He didn't know if he was alive or dead because all senses were gone.
