  • What is Shetland like in winter?
It's a place of beautiful sunrises and sunsets, cold, crisp, sharp light, heavy skies, dramatic waves and ever changing landscapes.
Hear the stories of winter from those who live here, and see our gorgeous scenery of a wintertime here at 60 degrees north.

My Grandmother is from Shetland and I'm wanting to come in Feb of 2022. Covid willing. As a young boy, she would talk to me about the winter there. How beautiful it is. It has been a dream of one to get there and now at 40somthing I will. Cant wait to meet you all.

The Shetlands are on the same latitude as my native city of Saint Petersburg, Russia. They are many hundreds kilometres from it. Nevertheless, my heart is there. Thanks a lot for the chance to see this beauties. Greetings and love from Russia!

My great grandmother came from Shetland. Her family emigrated to Karamea in New Zealand in 1874 when she was about twenty years old. Her name was Mary Johnson. She was born in Brindister, Aithsting. Maybe one day I will get to visit Shetland. Have a good day everyone. PS I hear there are not too many murders there! Love that tv programme.

My G/G/Grandma, Annie Bruce Matthewson, born 1857, also came (from Unst) to NZ in 1875 - possibly on the ship Jessie Readman. Family lore has it that she travelled with her future husband, Welshman Thomas Richard Wheeler Harrhy. They married not long after their arrival at Port Chalmers, another fishing village, where they spent the rest of their lives. As one might expect, fishing was in their blood. Their sons would also become fishermen.
Their innate hardiness coupled with all that fish in their diet may have contributed to their longevity. Both died at home in their mid-90s - no mean achievement in the 1950s and within four hours of each other. This close parting made the local newspapers. Again, according to family the old man died of a broken heart.

This bleak world alone?" (The Last Rose Of Summer)

I spent 7 years there in the early eighties. A part of my soul still yearns. It is still home in some way. My hills and the Westside and the toon, Lerwick are still part of me. Have to limit my trips back in case I decide to return.

To see that dome of stars overhead and the waves pounding the cliffs, the play of light now crystalline then misty - truly a remarkable corner of the world. Doubt I will ever be able to visit so your videos will be watched many times. Thank you. And since it is Christmas best holiday wishes to all in the Shetland Islands. May 2021 be kinder to all of us. I made this trip several times back in the 1950's whilst serving 18 months on UNST, at R.A.F. SAXA VORD in Haroldswick. The ferries were a little different then, S.S. St.CLAIR & S.S. St.NINIAN. Often thought of doing a civie visit. they were good days, many happy memories.

Thanks for the memory. Was in Shetland from 1978 to 1979 (Scalloway to Unst to Spiggie). I lived in Banks Cottage near Haroldswick in 1978. I remember the roads were always being rebuilt after the heavy trucks tore up the road to Saxa Vord!! And, of course, Haroldswick has the most northern Post Office.
