As the saying goes, "less is more"... a gorgeous version of the B minor mass. The smaller ensemble, the sparse instrumentation adds so much color and intimacy to the performance. It's not clear whether this great Master piece was perform in Bach time, but I'm sure it would sound exactly as with this ensamble due to the use of Baroque instruments. One must simply close one's eyes and imagine that Unser Vater JS Bach is conducting the mass himself. Miracle of human creation Misa en Si menor de Bach!!!!
Wonderful period. Like other comment here...nothing is missing by using a small ensemble but on the contrary. In fact some researchers( the most known is Joshua Rifkin) argue after intensive research, that Bach composed his vocal music mostly for one voice per part...by preforming in this way, one can hear so clearly the complex counterpoint and the way the voices are interacting with each other. Also, with such small chorus all the singers much be first rate...there isn't an option here for mediocre singer to hide in a large chorus. I own a few CDs in which the Mass is being played in such manner...you can fully appreciate this music by listening to it with a reasonably good stereo system, and not via CZcams.The only minor caveat i have is that some parts should have been performed slightly faster...
Man hätte auch einfach die Originalversion von Bach musizieren können. Ich finde, daß man an so einem grandiosen Kunstwerk nicht einfach "herumbasteln" kann. Meiner Meinung nach merkt man das leider an vielen Stellen. Die originale h- moll Messe ist ein monumentales und unerreichtes Meisterwerk. Trotzdem eine besondere Hochachtung für alle Ausführenden, wenn auch ohne Akzeptanz für die Bearbeitung
I'm not sure why this paired down "arrangement" was necessary. Maybe they didn't have available all instruments specified in Bach's scores. E.g., 2 oboes, horn (only used in Quoniam), 2 bassoons (2 required in Quoniam), 3 trumpets, etc. Where those instruments are specified in the score, their absence in the performance results in a less than satisfactory sound.
