Intrepid for Intermediate String Orchestra by Timothy J. Isham
Using a combination of 6- and 7-bar phrases for its main theme, Intrepid’s strident melodies convey a sense of courage in the face of danger. Heavy use of hooked bows throughout reinforces this technique, and accompaniment figures that toggle between slurred and staccato figures demand close attention to articulation. Melodic material is shared liberally among all sections, with some shifting required from the cellos (divisi parts allow more advanced players to take the upper shifting passages while less advanced players may play the lower part without shifting).
