Spending The Night In A Mountain Bothy In Northumberland

I spend an overnight in Spithope bothy in Northumberland only a few miles from the Scottish Border.

The bothy is situated on an ancient cross border drove road with a large dry stone wall enclosure to the rear of the building. It could have been an open night resting place for the drovers and their stock on their journey to the markets in the south. When this trade ceased it became a ‘keb hoose’ where a shepherd would ‘set on’ orphan lambs with ewes which had lost lambs. Keb Sike runs nearby. It is also believed to have been used as a shooting hut. Then the forest came.

Been visiting this bothy for years for overnight stays. Last week was my last visit due to morons not burying their body waste and leaving toilet paper strewn all over. Cracking little bothy though
