Swimmers cramp is a possibility, having your legs cramp up in a river is a scary thought. No one stretches when they swim for fun, I have noticed a lot of people don't know how to tread water or float on their backs.
For some reason, when I was being taught how to swim, floating on my back was the hardest thing for me. I think I was scared bc I could not see what all was around me and would flinch every time I heard the littlest thing. Took my teachers the longest to get me calm and now, if I get tired, I float. Now it is the most peaceful thing for me in the water
When I was in Coast Guard boot camp, we were taught a technique of floating with your head mostly under water most of the time finding neutral buoyancy, every so often stroking so the head goes above the water so a breath can be taken. I wish it was a technique every one would be taught in swim lessons. It is a technique that has been proven to keep people alive for days in the open ocean if they were on a ship that went down or they fell overboard.
Ohhh that totally could have been it.
Still very sad most people dont teach their kids how to swim and expect it to just be an instinct.. meanwhile the professional instructor who taught her young babies how to back float and swim is give death threats from "concerned parents". I've probably saved 2 or 3 people for potentially drowning in the ocean as a 120 lb teenage girl... my mom also saved 2 overweight men while river rafting who went under in the rapids.
@@michaelgarrity6090 I have never even realized how insanely lucky I am to have spent my entire childhood in the ocean. I have saved 2 or 3 people from potentially drowning who were much older and fitter than me. I never realized till recently that swimming is really not someone humans are inherently good at turns out.

When I was around 8 years old, I almost drowned in a friend’s backyard pool that was only about 3 feet deep. If I would have stood up, my head would have been above water. But I suddenly just kinda frozen for no reason. If her Dad had not been there, I would have drowned. Strange things happen in water. Never swim alone!!!

JEREMEY: Back in 1986, I was visiting Dallas/FW with relatives and I went to a park on North Lake.. I am a water hunter and I asked a groundskeeper if there was a swimming area for the park. He told me to stay out of the lake, there is a power station across the lake and when they turn on the cooling turbines, the current is so strong that it would suck a person off their feet and drown them and the divers would find the body pinned to the screens. Evidently that happened to some swimmers in the past.
Whenever I hear of drownings like this I always think of the following as possible causes: 1. The current (which very well could've been if the dam opened up)..2. Something medical happened to them while trying to swim..3. A big log/tree branch (or something of that sort) came along (under the water) and they got caught on it and pulled under..or 4. Some type of "river monster" pulled them under (such as a giant snapper or catfish). It's tragic and sad no matter what the cause though..so thank for helping all the families that you do. 💚
Sudden temperature changes in the water or currents - could have been cold water shock. I know I've been in rivers in early autumn even in a wetsuit the temperature shocked me and if I'd jumped in the sudden exposure would have caused involuntary inhalation when the other people with me were absolutely fine and jumping in loads.
The sound of the train underwater, is quite creepy and ominous. But also awesome at the same time. Could be a possibility that teen heard a train, got disoriented, lost his bearings/got stuck/exhausted. We saw, through your eyes what he possibly saw in his last moments. Rip. I think he was just a very poor swimmer sadly. Most people dont teach their kids how to swim and expect it to just be an instinct.. in murky water if friends are not looking and someone goes under that's it. Hard to notice immediately that they are missing until it's too late.
Hi Jeremy, what I was thinking as you described the river is maybe the current spun him around back into the base of the bridge and banged his head or the current was so strong like being in natures washing machine and he lost his bearing and ran out of air.., not everyone knows to blow out and watch the bubbles go up to follow them.

I have never done the bubble trick even in the ocean. Good to know. And I'm a very strong swimmer. I usually just fully relax my body and that gives me enough time to figure it out. If you aren't in stress and have good cardio you can comfortably hold your breath for a bit. Unfortunately I think this guy just did not know how to swim. Just because you can toggle paddle in shoulder high water doesnt mean you can truly swim :(
Great job Jeremy! I bet that deep spot was a big shock to the poor kid. I’m still amazed at how much junk people put in our waters. Thanks for getting some of it out!

Hey Jeremy, It's a good chance the teenager didn't know how to swim lile his friends. I hate to admit it but, I was in a near drowning situation myself. I went in water I didn't know and hit the drop off and went under. I was like a crab under water, grabbing everything I could to head up and out. I never went in waters like rivers, canals and lakes, any place where people could swim again. I'm sorry for the family that lost their son. It's the worst feeling knowing you might drown.

Yup growing I had to save 4 people that almost drown ..not saying they all would of died if I didn't grab them atlest one of them would of he was out and lungs full of water needed for ..teens don't like to admit they can't swim the other 3 were just like person struggling and had to swim out and drag them back in cuz they were trending in one place

I think a survey like this should happen regularly where folks swim ,it would be good if there where signage giving details like depth and current strengths at different times of the year ,maybe would help folks make better decisions . All kids should be thought to swim in school it’s a vital survival skill. Love your vids .xx
Grew up in Sacramento. The American River dumps into the Sacramento River at Discovery Park. Those rivers are full of melted snow, very cold water. Every spring people drown. People assume they are in better shape then they really are, forgetting they haven't been as active during the winter. Between not having swam during the winter, so not in as good a shape and frigid water, people drown. Back when I was a teen there was a sign at Discovery Park stating how many people had drowned in the river that year.

Hi Jeremy. At your 7:22 mark you found a wire with loops at either end. I think that is a lightweight portable hand saw. Campers use this to cut small branches. Keep doing all that you (and the guys) are doing. It is so important. Also, can you pet Charlie for me please.

Maybe he wasn't a good swimmer. He could have panicked realizing it was deeper than he thought. We will never know his circumstance just the sad outcome.

Keep in mind, the dam may have different amounts of water it lets out one day to the next, so that can change the undertoe of the river if they let out more water that day then before.....
Any river of any size can easily become treacherous. I think people don't appreciate that fact. They don't consider all the unseen dangers a river can possess such as unseen underwater snags, human created debris strewn all along the bottom, etc.

Mary Latorre that's why I was scanning the comments to see if anyone else caught that. I've watched so many old mafia movies that as soon as he picked it up that's what I thought. I think it's Odd he found it there if it is indeed a gruat. I hope he reads these comments. Maybe I'm paranoid but I think I'd go to the closest station, tell them where it was found to see if the police would have any interest in it.
It's a cutting wire for bone, horns of cows etc., why would that be in there unless someone is trying to cover something up. And it's stainless it won't rust

This is a new approach for your videos, looking out for hazards for swimmers and not a bad one at that! I think you should mention the bridge/location in the titles so it comes up in searches though. It's also entirely possible that he suffered the infamous muscle spasm in his calf and simply panicked too. We'll never know. There are so many tragic and bizarre events that lead to the demise of people that it's a wonder any of us can survive day by day.

Cold water shock, we had a 18 year old lad drown in a quarry nearby 2 years ago, dive team said the water temp was 5°c colder 1 meter down from that of the surface.

When you go diving is there any one on the shore watching and waiting just as a precaution? In case (God forbid) something happens and they know who you are, what you're doing and where you were? With people who cant swim you tur you back and they are under :( especially in muddy water as many lakes and rivers are. I've never been more grateful to be a strong swimmer. Thank god for my parents.

There is a large river in Michigan/Wisconsin that I guarantee you’d find stuff in. There was a very popular swimming area where there was a shooting that killed 4 teens. The river is also home to a large mafia owned hotel that was said to be Al Capones.
Another stellar video guys! I'm wondering if the victim had any trauma to his body when they found him. Possibly he hit his head on the concrete and it made him confused and possibly he lost consciousness after he came up the first time. It's sad when you can't figure out why it happened.

Former lifeguard growing up. Always remember eating a meal then swimming directly after can cause cramps. It's a big no no. Always wear a flotation device of some sort.

A friend an I get wrapped up in an incident at 15 years of age. Swimming in the Rideau River at the town of Burrit's Rapids below the last canal basin in 15 feet of water with our skin diving gear. A teenage boy about 6 foot tall was watching us and after we climbed out, he jumped in and immediately panicked when he couldn't find bottom. His foster father and 2 other adult men jumped in and immediately got into trouble as well. My friend and I were about 50 feet away dropped our stuff, ran back and jumped in. I started grabbing adults and dragging them to the warf while my buddy got behind the boy and put him in a full Nelson hold then got him to the warf. After the adults got him out and started applying what was called the Holger-Nielson method of artificial respiration and had called an ambulance/police from the nearest town (30 minutes away) we quietly left. The boy was definitely experiencing shock and kept stopping breathing. This was before the days when CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation was well known, and neither of us believed that our help would be welcomed anymore as we were beginning to be blamed for the whole tragic mess. I don't know if the boy survived or not sadly.
It is shocking the amount of garbage that gets tossed into a river !!

The 17 year old drowned because he wasn't as good a swimmer as he thought and the deceptive appearance when underwater making it look like you're deeper than you are, the max depth is 15 feet in the middle on either side of the center pillar and the water between the shore and outer pillars is a max depth of four feet with a reflective bottom that made it look like the bottom is the surface between the outer pillars and the shore (I had to dive it under extremely similar circumstances to Jeremy exactly 35 years before Jeremy)

You are correct it is two different rivers during generation. I was there just A couple of days ago magnet fishing at the 113 boat ramp just below Euharlee Road the current was so strong it nearly sucked me off of the boat ramp The concrete pad at the base of the steps had nearly 1 foot of water over it
Nug, great idea to check the water. You’re brave! You don’t seem hesitant about going in where someone drowned. How do you prepare yourself for an unexpected strong current? You get into all types of rivers. Maybe do a live on how to save oneself.
One thing I kept in mind when swimming in bays of the Mississippi... If the current takes me, let it and point my feet 45 to the shore and try and slowly work my way in.... Never had to use it as I kept in the bay and never got out near the main current, so I don't know how good it would have worked.... Just was my game plan should I get washed down stream.... Also knew few towns down was a dam, so I knew I wouldn't be washed to the gulf from Minnesota.. LOL

I live in WNY and the barge canal, and the Niagara river have a lot of under tows. A few years ago a police diver got trapped and died in our Niagara River during a practice run. It took a long time to find him

Back in the early to mid 80’s, my mom, my little sis, and my 2 brothers went to the lake for a usual swim and picnic. Very common for us to head to Table Rock or Roaring River after church. This particular day we were at a swim area that had a swimming dock out several feet in the deep, buoys were around noting that it was a swimming area. After about an hour being there, someone started hollering Jamie where is Jamie? Well Jamie is my name but it wasn’t me they were looking for it was a lady’s son who was about 15. He was known to be a pretty good swimmer so as mom really didn’t worry that much. My mom freaked out thinking it was me, they found Jamie and pulled him to shore and started CPR and continued for what seemed like hours. The ambulance arrived and took him away and he was pronounced deceased on arrival. An autopsy was done to figure out why such a healthy young swimmer drowned boggled minds. After an autopsy, it was concluded Jamie had a cramp or some sort of paralysis from a spider bite that he had gotten days earlier. That was their conclusion and it didn’t make sense that something so small as a spider could be so deadly. So please please get your spider bites checked out and stay safe in the water!!!

It's a word processor I used to have one. The current could have been worse and the wind could have been rumbling and forcing the kid back.
that yellow spike Is Is an anchor for a fish marking buoy. They are a plastic buoy about about 4" square and come with a rope wrapped around them and one of those for an anchor the idea is you drive around I'll do with your graph and find fish and then throw the buoy
He may have got cramp in his legs. This would make it hopeless to tread water to keep his head above water. So sad 17 year old loss of life at such a young age.
Jeremy so sad about Sergio. Here is another theory as to what may have caused him to drown. If a person is swimming and they develop muscle cramps and if they were in deep water that could very well cause them to drown. I don't think the tackle box was in the water for an extended period of time because of the lack of mud inside of it. Stay Safe Jeremy and Nick 💞

Could have some leg cramps wall he was in the water I new 2 kid and there dad drowned in Tennessee river in hell town TN. About 40 years ago there where 5 of them dad seen them having a hard time getting up for air so he jump in to held his kids got 1 out and he drowned wall to save his other 2 children mom and 1 of the child lived God bless them

I'd love to see that laptop after getting hosed off. It looks strikingly like a Tandy 1400 LT/FD/HD, which would put its manufacture as early as 1987 (though 88 or 89 is more likely). Wonder if Adrian's Digital Basement or 8-Bit Guy would have any interest in peeking at it, for posterity's sake.
We have a really cold river here in Arizona and well the day it was really hot and I jumped from our raft (we were tubbing) and well idk what happened but my body kinda froze on me… and I remember the river being really deep it I was able to move my legs around and toes but it was like my neck and arms cramped up. But to make things worse when I dived my shorts weren’t on tight either and they got in between my ankles and I think that’s what brought my body back the thought of my shorts being In between my ankles gave me a boost of energy to move around
