    It's staggering how so many of the highs and lows of table soccer mirror those of American electric football.

    Funny you mentioned the letters of complaint from Italy in the early 90s. Around the same time, Laurence Cummings from Belfast wrote a 12 page letter to Trevor Spencer complaining he was a victim of bias from the Bangor League which I organised at the time. After all the letters from Italy I can just imagine Trevor's reaction :)

    Very well researched and presented edition as always. I first played the game in the 1967-70 period and have to say that most of my school friends did not pay much attention to any of the associations. Most kids I knew at that time created their own leagues, so I do wonder how much commercial benefit these organised tournaments brought to Subbuteo.

    thats really nice to mention Peter Czarkowski from Dortmund. I have never met him though but ordered a lot of subbuteo equipment back in the eighties, as he was not only a subbuteo player but a subbuteo distributor also. By this time, subbuteo was still available in german shops - but - bits here, peaces there. At Peters, you could get everything. And it was easy, just sent a list of required items, sent a cheque and in return, he delivered promptly.

    Great show, excellent to get a perspective from a neutral standpoint. What the game needs is a solid base, but which kind, old style flats, OO scale, modern flat :). But seriously the conundrum is, how to build the game/sport with the involvement of Subbuteo whilst at the same time being independent and not commercially tied to Subbuteo - ie is it possible for Subbuteo to be 'just another sponsor' or will the playing side of the game forever be separated from the 'parent company', And do the current owners of the brand care, or indeed need to care about that? But without that global brand - which is so much a part of the public consciousness, to back the game in some way there's clearly little chance of serious growth and a lack of the grass roots bringing new players into the game. Really enjoyable and I look forward to the concluding part in a future episode.

    • @davidgladman7233
      @davidgladman7233 Před 3 lety

      I don't think the global brand is anywhere near the consciousness of young people today. FISTF are trying to encourage member associations to grow the game but I confess that my club hasn't done so. We love playing but any new recruit is someone who played back in the 70s or 80s. I remember well the divisions in the subbuteo world. The problem was that the OO scale figures were such an inferior product as far as playing was concerned. Polish changed that for a while but still today subbuteo products are just not good enough. Keith mentions the two Englishmen playing in the final of the Europa Cup in 1976. One of them was in fact a Scot who was representing England by being a member of the ETSA. If you recall, Simon, it wasn't unknown for Scotland to be represented by an Englishman in those days!!

      @@davidgladman7233 Good points Dave - and yes some people used to call me Simon McGoodman back then! It was a wonderful experience for me to represent Scotland at the Europa Cup in Verviers and then again in Birmingham at the team event (even if I did get totally stuffed). Scotland has had some great players over the years (me not included!).

      I grew up with the heavy weights in primary school. I enjoyed the ability of the 'player' to swerve around a blocking opponent to hit the ball. Not possible with the flats. Before Subbuteo, I had my own invention of table soccer with coins as players, a button as the ball, and a chess piece as the goalie.

  • @None12445
    @None12445 Před 3 lety

    We, subbuteo players, should forever play by the original rules. No more talk - flick it 😉
    Edit: the ball hit; It looked very fast, and of course I know the answer as I’m watching backwards ( missed the last month’s 3-4 I think) I would have guest a low number, but it was not 😄
