Most people love all parts of this band, the changeups are what make them great.
I’ve been listening to it all day today, and it’s grown on me more the more I’ve listened to it!
This song is more serious than usual for them. They tend to be more playful and light-hearted. This song deals with the guitarist coming to terms with bullying he suffered when he was in school. That tormented, internalized anger and resentment bubbling under the surface and eventual catharsis comes across in the music and video. It's powerful.
It’s fucking incredible is what it is
@@markabusireactions Glad you gave it a few more listens and changed your mind about some of the parts you felt didn't fit initially. I think the song is intentionally written to be challenging to listen to in places as a way to convey some of the emotional turmoil being expressed. Those gang vocals near the end of the song still give me goosebumps even after hearing it countless times.
@@sjd1968ca Agree 100%. Having Nao open and close it makes it like she's telling the story of her younger brother, but he gets to express his anger and frustration. His eventual forgiveness and rebirth with the chalkboard animation of the rain and flowers growing through their bodies are just brilliant.
I first tried out MtH because Akane Hirose (Band-Maid) said their drummer Nao Kawakita inspired her to play the drums. I didn't really enjoy the song I listened to (ALIEN) and forgot about them. Then I found out that Nao also inspired Tamu Murata (Nemophila) to play the drums and I gave them another go. This song.
After a minute I was laughing and after five minutes I was crying. I felt like I somehow knew the message of the song, and when I found a translation it turned out I was more or less right. The guitarist wrote it to move on from childhood bullying, the title translates as "Revenge Prep", but he lets go at the very end. Nao is his big sister and she refers to herself as such in the intro.
I find MtH hit-and-miss overall but this song is a contender for my Desert Island Discs. I could agree with your comment about some sections being unnecessary for some of their other songs, but when you know the narrative of this song, they are absolutely necessary here.
Get well soon!
EDIT: I meant to say that I do like ALIEN now after going back to it. I don't expect you to though, at least not on one listen.
Yeah the more I’ve listened to it the more the kinda more abrasive parts have started working for me, and now I kinda love it top to bottom 😂
Nao, their drummer, has been an influence on a lot of female drummers in Japan. Some notable drummers that mentioned her as an influence include Band-Maid's Akane and Nemophila's Murata Tamu, but I'm sure there are plenty more of them.
Seeing Tamu -- who is a hugely talented and respected multi-instrumentalist in her own right -- absolutely fan-girling over meeting Nao and the rest of MtH is incredible. Nemophila have done several Maximum the Hormone covers so it seems Tamu is not the only MtH fan in the band.
Not just drummers, but musicians and women entertainers in general.
@@sjd1968ca ... and Nao going, "Me?!?" is so sweet.
I'm definitely into it. Great track, masses of creativity. One to explore, I feel.
Yeah I’ll definitely be doing more I reckon!
If Maximum the Hormone were more prolific, then they maybe might be my favourite band today. But having said that, Nao (Female drummer) was/is a huge inspiration to A LOT of upcoming female drummers. Both Akane from Band-Maid and Tamu from Nemophila site Nao as a HUGE influence.
Legends.
Fun fact: The guitarist was a judge/coach on the Japanese version of "The Voice".
And this is one of their more melodic and not so crazy songs 😂
Might explain why I like it haha
I'm pretty excited about this one.🙂
Personally I wouldn’t be, but that’s because I’ve already seen it
Check out their song Alien
Part of the reason Maximum the Hormone's songs come across so well is they do all the different styles so well. It is almost like "If you don't like the music now, just wait a moment!"
I song I think you might like is "Koi No Mega Lover" ("Love for the Mega-lover") which blends 2 different styles really well.
You might also like "VAP". VAP was their original music label before they got success and moved to Warner Bros Japan. So they wrote a thank-you song for VAP. The song is a lot lighter than normal and also features Nao (the drummer) getting to be the front woman for once. This was because Daisuke (the front-man) was head-banding so hard during a concert that he dislocated his neck. So for this song he is sitting down playing the drums.
The song shows the humour of the band. It has a section at the end where Nao and Daisuke argue about who will be the front-man now.
Or if you want more madness, try "A.L.I.E.N.". A lightning tour of heavy metal genres plus funk plus "Weezer" style rock.
Ha ha! Wait until you get to A.L.I.E.N. I'm not keen on metal, but I adore MTH, you never know where the song is going and they are fun
This band is fairly new to me and I don't like everything they do, but they have me hooked. They can be brilliantly creative and I get the impression they don't care what anyone thinks--they craft the music they want to. Suggest "Koi no America" next and perhaps after watching the MV, check out a version--available on their YT channel--of the four band members in a green room dancing to the audio of the song. Both are really great fun and I think say a lot about the band.
You gotta check out their song Koi No Sperma. Brilliant.
Koi No Sperma was the first song I heard/saw from them. It's genius. I hope that Mark reacts to it
Another favourite is RYO vs RYO
20 or so years ago, I heard a viral song where two Japanese women sang like angels during the first verse, but when the chorus came along the sweet singing, pitch and cadence all went to vacation as the women sang hardcore metal style, shaking their heads like they were being possessed, and the ears of those listening to the song with headphones died a grueling death. Then the chorus ended and the second verse began, and the song transitioned once again into a peaceful, gentle melody (until the chorus came along again, that is...)
This song reminded me a lot of that one. XD
From Pavarotti to Maximum the Hormone ... Can this work well? We'll see 😂
I like a varied channel 😂
And Kpop before it
I don't know if you ever reacted to HANABIE, rumor is they started out in school as a MtH cover band.
I did! I have one song from them on the channel somewhere!
Hey, great that you got around to MTH, 👍👍 you picked up it sounds angry, as far as I understand this song is about memories of being bullied at school , so that’s definitely powerfully portrayed, As for their regular style of songs, generally I’d describe them as “HAPPY punk-rock-metal-rap-ska-fun,fun,fun” generally they don’t give a fuck for convention and are not pretentious at all.
Cheers mate
👍🇦🇺🤘
I suggest you to react to "Tsume Tsume Tsume" and "Zetsubou Billy" . I think there is a nice melody in Tsume Tsume Tsume that you'll appreciate a lot. 😊
Welcome to the Hormone hole! I've listened to quite a bit of this band and I'm still none the wiser. Check out Koi No America or ALIEN for even wilder genre-hopping adventures.
When it comes to Mth and Jinjer, you have to listen to their songs several times, to get into them.
Hahaha...Yoshu Fukushu is my favorite MtH song. Thank you so much for reacting to it, Mark. As another commentary mentioned, Akane of BAND-MAID was/has been inspired by Nao, the female drummer from MtH. That said (and who cares, right?), MtH is one of the best FUCK YOU EXPETATIONS bands of the 21st century. Again, thank you, Mark.
One gets used to MtH faking one out. It tends to be worth it. I don't like metal screaming as a rule. But I'll happily take Daisuke's vocal efforts in that direction due to the overall package. They can go even more weirdly genre-clashing too.
I encourage you to find a translation of the lyrics, which describes the torment MAXIMUM THE RYO-KUN suffered while being bullied in 8th grade. Then you might understand that the Metal parts complement the angry spoken word part in conveying the lyrical intent of their best song.
Try え・い・り・あ・ん (Alien) next. But first take a minute to look up the history of WINNIE in Japan.
I don't know who WINNIE is, but we've got to stop him!
@@surfingasongwave Yes, WINNIE cannot be tolerated.
Nice reaction to a band that, at first listen, is very jarring, but like mold, grows on you and you can't get rid of it (in a good way). There's a lot to explore for this band but be warned their label tends to be a bit harsh to reactors. There's also a YT video of Akane covering one of their songs "Benjo Sandal Dance" (czcams.com/video/KPgMD-nPITQ/video.html).
Ohhh, that mold is normal then?
@@GaryHolloway-810 That mold conveys some beneficial properties, it repels certain types of pop music, has a built in auto-tune detector and provides a warm embrace when listening to B-M.
@@glenkelley6799 Lol. Oh is that why then. I wondered why it felt so plush like moss. Plus anything that repels Bieber has a willing symbiotic host in me :)
I really like MTH and feel that this use of genre switching makes particular sense here with a song about being bullied at school. School is one of those places where musical choices make you stand out and being a: punk, emo, metal head, stoner, driller is a heart on sleeve conviction that opens a teen up to abuse from others, as can not making such a choice, even if its a choice you only really made because the goth girls were so alluring. Actually I quite liked Sisters, Mission, Bauhaus etc as well as Zuzan-Zamantha.
Some Japanese bands, old and new. Take your pick: BAND-MAID [All their songs... really!], LOVEBITES [Break the Wall, Raise some Hell, and all the other songs], BABYMETAL [All their songs, because they are all different], MAXIMUM THE HORMONE [Yoshu Fukushu], DEXCORE [Earthworm], CROSSFAITH [Catastrophe], SiM [Killing Me], NINGEN ISU [Heartless Scat], ADO [Unravel (LIVE)], UNLUCKY MORPHEUS [Black Pentagram], YOUSEI TEIKOKU [Astral Dogma, Patriot Anthem (Live)] and their other band: DenKare [Detonator], COLDRAIN [Die Tomorrow], CRYSTAL LAKE [The Circle], GIVEN BY THE FLAMES [Ronove], LONESOME_BLUE [Face the Fear], ANGRY FROG REBIRTH [2Step Syndrome], SILENTLY SHOOTING TRAITORS [Manipulate], ALDIOUS [Dominator], TRiDENT [Ambivalent, Spoopy], BRIDEAR [Light in the Dark, Ignite], CINQ ELEMENT [Destiny], MARY'S BLOOD [Marionette], GRAUPEL [Bereavement], DOLL$BOXX [Take my Chance], SOKONINARU [Tenohira De Odoru], HELLO SLEEPWALKERS [Flying Saucer], TELECiDE [Tied up Memories], NEKO [Ghost on a Record], MARDELAS [G-Metal], MERGINGMOON [Greyen], ROTTENGRAFFTY [Hallelujah], JILUKA [Mephisto, Overkill], BROKEN BY THE SCREAM [Emotion Cross-Counter], FATE GEAR [Unbreakable Wings], LYNCH [Devil], GACHARIC SPIN [Mindset], DIR EN GREY [Ningen wo Kaburu], X JAPAN [Kurenai], DAZZLE VISION [Second], DEVILOOF [Torture] _(Deathcore Band),_ JUPITER [My Enemy], NOKUTO [Life of Desire], GALNERYUS [Angel of Salvation], SAISEIGA [Ride On], BLOOD STAIN CHILD [Del-Sol], NEMOPHILA [Rise, Hypnosis], DADAROMA [Lucid Dream], Takayoshi Ohmura [THE CATACLYSM], JILUKA [Overkill, Lluvia, or Venom] _(Electro Gothic Metal Band),_ HANABIE [We Love Sweets, Be the GAL], ZEILE [Deathside], A CROWD OF REBELLION [Re:Create of the Re:d], PALEDUSK [Area PD], POLKADOT STINGRAY [any song], MUTANT MONSTERS [Abnormal], BLACKLAB [Insanity], ASTERISM [Fiction, Rising Moon, Unravel, or Church], NOISEMAKER [Hunter or Prey], BiSH [The Night When Stars Twinkle], SCANDAL [A.M.D.K.J.], DEEP GIRL [I kill], Mrs. GREEN APPLE [Inferno], BRATS [Doudatte Yokatta], THE ORAL CIGARETTES [Frenzy Hey Kids!!], GIRUGAMESH [Drain], LiLiHoLi [From Darkness to Light], THE DEVIL’S KILLING MERRY-GO-ROUND [Diabolos], OTOBOKE BEAVER [Don't Light My Fire, Love is Short], and many many more...
By the way: GET WELL SOON 🤧🤒😷
Thanks mate 😂 I’m slowly getting there now lol
“Metal shit”? Sir, please 😭 This is one of my all time favourite songs! All the change ups are amazing! Perfect for my ADD brain 😅 I think you should try their song Maximum the Hormone II -Let’s Talk about Menkata Cottelee next. If that doesn’t sell you on the switch ups then it might just not be for you 😢
But if it does get you on board for the crazy… check out Paledusk with the song BLACK ICE next and then maybe SIGHTBACKS: Zone. Japan has some of the best chaotic music and I fucking love it! You never know what to expect and it never gets boring. It tickles my brain in the right places 😅
Don’t worry lol, I listened to this another 20 times the next day and now I love it hahaha
@@markabusireactions alright, I forgive you 😂 I guess you were just new to the kind of chaos they can bring. Maybe you will soon be as addicted to the unexpected as me and find music with normal structure a little boring 🤣
@@Shiroar I just suspect they’re not a ‘get it on the first listen’ band, but that’s a good thing cause it means it doesn’t get boring quickly!
Not really my thing, but definitely a couple of their songs are mood songs for me. Recommendations in Discord.
The bits are thrown in because MTH give zero F's.
Feel someone might have to point out that: Speech in a song, while today rap is the thing and has been for a generation, is "recital". So there is a recital passage by Maximum the Ryo-kun (Kitakawa Ryo) in this song, no "rapping".
I didn’t say he was rapping
Sorry you're feeling ill, Mark. I would've thought maybe a Lemsip instead of a Vape would've made you feel better but i'm no doctor.🤷♂️
You’re correct.
You are no doctor. 😂
@@markabusireactions You hilarious bastard, you.😆👍
@@GaryHolloway-810 as if I’m letting the flu stop me from being an absolute hero
@@markabusireactions Yeah let's not push it, hey!😏
@@GaryHolloway-810 😂😂😂
Motto of them is. You shouldn't do that. But do it... And it works. Their song alien is my replacement of red bull x 5. And belongs on a try not to headband list. If you never saw it try the try not to headband 2020 version
Reflecting on what you said wrapping up your commentary that the bits you didn’t like made it a little hard to listen to, I’m thinking for me that’s what attracts me to chaotic music, it’s a tiny mental challenge to put the pieces of the song together (possibly 🤷🏻♂️) So that’s probably why I can’t stand regular Pop Music, it’s just too sugary-sweet, I’m after something a little tangy and bitter
The song is transcendent genius. Markabusi did good, but he would have gotten it a bit more, with the lyrics. There is no "unnecessary" in Yoshu Fuskushu. It's a duel between the devil and the angel on Ryo's shoulder, between revenge and getting over it.
Next song : black yen power gman spy
Most of the Japanese female bands that you have enjoyed of late owe a lot to MTH. They are the mommy and daddies.
The crazy thing is that this is a "Normal, Typical" Maximum The Hormone video. They jump cut quickly from genre to genre within a song and in videos the stylistic jumps are jarring and surreal. Try "A.L.I.E.N." and you will be mystified.
The unnecessary parts are what makes Maximum The hormone totally necessary.
PS: they have some emo songs*.
*: that’s not true, I just wanted to mess with you because you pause during Kanami’s solos 😜
That part with the singing was pure My Chemical Romance btw 😉😉
@@markabusireactions And I LOVE MCR!
In 2022, I saw Maximum The hormone live in Paris and that was one of the best concerts of my life. Also, I’ve seen Otoboke Beaver last year and that was phenomenal too.
I’m looking forward to your next Maximum the hormone reaction 😉
Its a song that makes little sense to me there are bits which l agree were good but taken as whole it did not work for me.
Have you read the lyrics? It makes more sense and has more impact if you do. It's not meant to be pretty. It tells a story.
Disagree. It need all the parts especially the ‘shit’ part in the middle, bro.
I’ve listened to again and quite enjoyed the shit parts 😂
