    Good point about watching the shadow of the ball crossing the foul line. Not everybody releases the ball at the same place, some are farther back than others. Also, I've never been sure how standardized the lane markings are. You said 15ft was at the 3rd arrow (the base or tip?). At the 2 houses I've measured, 15ft was right between the tip of the 2nd arrow and the base of the 3rd.

    • @brunsnick
      @brunsnick  Před 5 měsíci +1

I also made a spreadsheet and its setup to only enter the release time, the time of first rotation, time at dots, time at arrows and time at head pin. From that it will tell me my revs, Ave speed to dots, Ave speed to arrows, and average speed to pins.

    The speed monitors in bowling centers in addition to only measuring near the pin deck are also all over the place in accuracy. I see 2 mph differences between the two lanes on the same pair in some cases.

    • @notonyourlife7939
      @notonyourlife7939 Před 5 měsíci +1

      Yeah, they're worthless for determining actual ball speed... but it will let you know if your ball speed is consistent or not, and give you a reference point for good shots vs bad shots. Both of which are far more useful for improving your game than having an "accurate" number for your ball speed. The number by itself doesn't help you much... but if you're fluctuating all over the place, you know your game has a problem.

    • @crimsontide1980
      @crimsontide1980 Před 4 měsíci

      Yep I've noticed the same thing. I'm generally in the 17's on my strike ball, and one night in league play my strike ball was like 18.4-18.7. I was like hell, I must be feeling really loose tonight 😂😂. But my teammate who's usually upper 14-lower 15 range was hitting 16.5 on the screen so I'm assuming that it was just reading fast for everyone on that pair of lanes. But I will say the carrydown was much farther than the last few weeks so less friction/more speed I'm guessing, even though I was attempting to back off my speed a bit to give the ball time to hook up with the lane since it was so slick.

    • @CodyLeslie
      @CodyLeslie Před 5 měsíci +1

      This would be slightly different in terms of revs, at least based on his explainers. He counts more directly, how many frames for one revolution. Tape not necessary if there is enough contrast in the ball color to track. The speed calculations are basically the same method.

    • @greggas1
      @greggas1 Před 5 měsíci

      Huh! My other reply disappeared. Brunsnick is measuring the time for 1 rotation directly. The calculator I put together docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Wl4y1jag2V3Rd-0EJYX9iyNnNq_e4qjHmxa3TmCllYE/edit#gid=119273129 divides the FPS by the number of frames for 1 rotation, to get your rotations per second. Then, it multiplies by 60 to get your RPM (REV Rate Method 1).

  • @crimsontide1980
    @crimsontide1980 Před 4 měsíci

    Awesome, I finally figured out my rev rate after years of guessing what it was. Was estimating about 550 and come to find out it was only 518, which is fine, the older I get the less I care about power or ball speed. So when the pros bowl on TV and it shows their ball speed, is it calculating their ball speed to the pins or their launch speed? Because most the pro bowlers, when theyre on a TV telecast their ball speed they show on TV is usually 19-21 miles an hour which is pretty insane if thats their ball speed when it crashes into the pins. Think mine usually reads out about mid 17ish and from what youre saying, the scoreboard readouts are showing ball speed when it hits the pins, so I'm not sure my launch speed yet but I'll have to calculate that as well.

    For finding out your ball speed, wouldn't you want to match up the ball position with the arrows when the ball meets the same position as the right most arrow? Since the arrows aren't in a straight horizontal line, so the numbers are off a bit.

    • @brunsnick
      @brunsnick  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Technically yes, but unless you need your ball speed to be accurate to fractions, doesn’t really matter. At 5 boards left of 3rd arrow, that makes the hypotenuse 15.008”.

      @brunsnick **short version**
      Looking to get back into bowling after 30 years. Out of shape and shoulder is not up to throwing a 14-15lb ball yet. Here in my hometown, 2 of the "pros" have told me that they're not wasting their time and to use a house ball for 6-12 months. The other "pro" is trying to get me to buy the most expensive stuff...How do I find out rev rate, ball speed, etc. to get the proper layout?
      I just buy a ball, get my hand measured, have the ball drilled, then after PAP, etc, is known have the ball plugged and redrilled/laid out?

      No, they’ll fit you and put a “safe” layout on it until you get more consistent and those things can be measured for future gear.

      You’re welcome! Ask some shops if they are hosting any demo days as well. May be a good chance to try before you buy.

    2 different rev rates.
    1 inch pin compared to a 4 inch pin have 2 different
    Rev rates, your opinion!

      Can your rev rate off your hand be dramatically different?
      1” pin to pap
      From
      4” pin to pap

      Ahh. I got you now. No, rev rate is a result of force applied to the ball, not the layout of the ball.

      @@Tyi276 A couple of months ago, Michael Tang (TVBowlingsupply) did a comparison between 10lb and 15lb balls. He was able to throw the 10lb ball with about 86 more rpm's than the 15. That's only about 17 rpm per POUND. Differences in Rg or layout will be much much less (if any).

    This is great content for those of us that don't have access to local modern coaching or competent PSOs!

      Locating a competent PSO in a lot of places these days is like unicorn hunting.
