You've an insanely good understanding of proportions and I was absolutely stunned as you showed the face from different perspectives! I don't have the words for how beautiful it is and how much I respect your patience and carefulness for details. For me personally I liked the face without hair more, but the way you shaped the eyelashes are magnificent! Just last year I started doing pottery and I love creating faces on everyday objects like bowls and mugs so this time lapse video is a motivation boost on living out this passion

I always fire my sculptures. In order to do so you have to hollow it out. It has to be the same thickness all over and no more than 1’’.
Next thing is make many holes inside. The last step helps to evaporate hot gases during firing and takes care of any air pockets if there are any. Another important thing is to fire your sculpture very slowly.
Watch my video “Hollowing sculpture and preparing for firing in the kiln” It will explain it all.

that would be a long video! From what I can see most of the cuts she made are to let the piece dry, not to continue working. Many steps are done more easily after the clay has reached a certain point of drying.

Absolutely wonderful! I carve, so it is subtraction not addition, so working backward does have drawbacks as you cannot correct it! Sigh, in clay, however, you can correct...so i may give this process a try:) Again, I learned a lot. How does one figure out the profile? I see you working front position, but how to check the side view to be accurate? Just my q for today!:) Thanks for this great video!

If you have time could you reply back to a question for an upcoming sculpture artist: What is that liquid that you brushed over your piece afterwards? I'm assuming it's something to keep it preserved- if so, what is it? And do you hallow your pieces out to throw it in a kiln. I'm trying to make sculptures that don't require using a KILN as the process is time consuming and usually requires you to 'mutilate' your piece from the inside out. Any input would be great! Awesome work you have here

Joannna, thank you so much for this video, it was very inspiring! You are a very talented sculptor. Quick question: is the entire face made of clay or is it "hollow" or "filled" inside with something other than clay? (seems it would be a lot of clay to use)

@jellipex I am firing my sculptures in my kiln at cone 04 or 06. Cone 06 is about 1830° F (999°C). The piece must be hollowed out before firing. I recommend doing this when the clay is firm enough to stand on it’s own without the support or the armature.

I am using water-based air dry clay and I have let my work sit for a week or so, it is now fully dry, but I would like to seal it and paint, do you know of a good sealer?? I was thinking Mod Pog and then acrylic paints, do you have any experience with a good idea here?
