Route 66 Illinois - Every town along the way - 59 of them!

- This is my first full trip on Route 66 and I really enjoyed it! Besides the quirky things along the route, I wanted to see all the towns that were either on the route or were close. For Illinois, I was able to get to 59 of them along the way and only might have missed a couple that were part of St Louis because it was difficult to figure out where to go and it's all basically St Louis anyways. The first part through Chicago was probably the least exciting but once I got to Joliet, it started being a lot more interesting. Great start to the trip!

Ah… we lived in far north Illinois near Wisconsin. Every year the family vacation was to drive Rte 66 to my grandma’s in. Small town of Bunker Hill , Il. This video brought back a lot of memories. Once again great video, thanks.

Berwyn, Ill-know it well. Went to H,S, in Joliet. Yes, those old vehicles are on the "old 66" in Joliet but ya didn't show "Stateville Prison"-that's OK. You did go over Ruby St. bridge in Joliet. Ah, the old Joliet prison on Collins St. I was an usher in the Rialto Theater in Joliet. My dad worked at the Joliet Arsenal in Elwood. Oh yes. The Gemini Giant. Took lots girls there for a soda (including my present wife of +55yrs). Don't tell her about the girls :). I don't believe it, the Polka Dot Drive in (Braidwood). I worked with the owner at RR Donnelley & Sons in Dwight, Illinois. And Godely, Illinois. Used to be a red light district even when I lived in Dwight, Illinois-it has started to "grow" into something now. Braceville, my father-in-law would drive me there for a beer(before I was 21). :) AH, Dwight, Illinois, we raised 3 boys in that town (we live in Greeley, Colorado since '95). Really, that gas station in Dwight was "Beckers Texaco" & I bought a lot of gas there. Odell, Illinois good fried chicken back in the day. And Pontiac, Illinois had a men's prison back in the day. Maybe it's still there. 2 of our kids & my wife went to Illinois State (& my money). OK, my great aunt was born in Atlanta, Illinois. You did good, rembemer it is "Becker's Texaco" in Dwight. We don't go back to Dwight anymore, too many mountain trails here in Colorado, :)
That backtracking (going parallel with 55 south And back north on iL 4 and then south was worthwhile but must have been back breaking. I live s couple miles from Motorheads south of Springfield…great video

I am thinking about doing Route 66 one state at a time. I live in New England so I guess Illinois would be the closest part to me. Thanks for the inspiration.
That would be cool! Yep Illinois is the furthest east it goes.
I live in Edwardsville (actually Glen Carbon) and it was great to see familiar territory on here. I'm actually kind of embarrassed that Edwardsville hasn't done very much to preserve its place on the Mother Road, as they have torn down many iconic places in the past. I hope you got to visit Henry's Rabbit Ranch. Rich, the owner, is an awesome guy! Also, you probably already knew this but McKinley Bridge is actually the first Mississippi River bridge to carry Route 66 - then it was Chain of Rocks Bridge.
I'm really enjoying your videos! Planning on a 66 trip in Oklahoma and sw Missouri for next month and these have been very helpful, as to what's current. Unlike most travel vloggers, you go straight to the point and spend less time trying to be a comedian. Keep it up!

I am just old enough to remember when I55 was still under construction, and we would travel through Litchfield on the way to St. Louis - frequently stopping at the Ariston Café for lunch. They had one of those moving scenery signs on the wall that just fascinated me to no end. Then I55 was finished, and we did our meal stops a little up the road at Raymond. Now that I'm old, we still stop at Litchfield for lunch - but usually at the McDonalds. Not as good, but quicker...
When I was 12 - 15, we lived along Route 66 in Bethany, OK.

As someone who lived across the river from southern IL. That area is rich in small towns and ghost towns. Beautiful rolling hills and fields overlooking the Mississippi River. To name a few: Wolf Lake, McClure, Tamms (abandoned prison there), Ullin, Alto Pass, Makanda

Absolutely.. the theaters are amazing. There's an old one in Colorado city Texas that I've watched a few movies at it... such amazing nostalgia in it!
But You have to get off of US66 to see them.
That Classic Country Cars place, I could spend all day there.

You should have covered the Pontiac Illinois Car museum and the rt.66 museum there.
While you featured the covered bridge on Route 66, it made me think of the movie “The Bridges of Madison County” then I googled the number of covered bridges in the US, check it out, possibly another road trip. With all the footage, how long did it take you to narrow it down to your CZcams flick? Great footage, you need a dog tho🤓 ❣️🐝🌻

A lot of interesting views of sites around Edwardsville and Glen Carbon, but very little of anything on US 66.
For sure! Unfortunately in most of the big cities, most traces of the classic Route 66 sites are gone. That’s why it’s a more enjoyable trip through the small towns on the route.
What about Route 64 in Illinois and Iowa. It starts as North Avenue in Chicago and goes across northern Illinois. Into Iowa before ending near Cedar Rapids.
I’d enjoy that trip! Maybe someday!

When in Joliet you were not on Cass Street Bridge. That was Jackson Street Bridge.

It's weird that no one can figure out exactly where this road is anymore. Obviously, there are Route 66 signs all over, but not actually official highway signs. If everyone calls it Route 66...then why is it not called Route 66?
I wonder why everybody starts Route 66 in Chicago. Every video I ever see, they all start in Illinois. Is it not legitimate to start the the trip in California? Illinois always seems to be the official start for some reason even though it could also be the end.
I think the idea is people used Route 66 to migrate west back in the day. So driving from east to west is how those people would’ve explored as they went. I know a lot people who start in California though too.
Not sure if it's on route 66 but Mill Creek,IL is a very small place not sure if anyone is left there. It's in the Southern part of ILLINOIS down by Carbondale, I remember that town, it's part of union country Mill Creek was very small.. my Daddy was from there.
It’s a little bit south of Route 66. Route 66 basically goes right through St Louis. Looks like a great little town though!
Last time we were there there wasn't much left a Post office , a few farms I know the house my great aunt lived in is gone, haven't been there since the 80's , it's a long drive from Granite City IL to Mill Creek IL went to the cemetery to StJohn's for a graveside service..the house was there but in bad shape.. not very many people around not like when I was younger they had ice social there in July everyone came back for them.
@@pamelalamb30 Very interesting! I've been to a lot of those kind of towns. Nice there is something left like a post office, but sad most of it is gone.
