In this video, we answer the question “What is Ethereum?” and give a simple breakdown of the incoming Ethereum 2.0.
Ethereum is home to a decentralized ecosystem made up of smart contracts, decentralized finance applications, and many other dapps.
However, Ethereum’s popularity has challenged the network's capacity to serve its growing user base.
Can Ethereum 2.0 usher in a new era for the second largest cryptocurrency? Or will other scalable smart contract platforms like Tezos and Algorand take the lead?

What is Ethereum? Ethereum 2.0 Explained with Kris Merkel
The most heartbreaking part of the video is showing ETH valued at $300 lol
I know (almost) nothing about crypto and I almost understood all this. Nice job explaining it all.
It means you know the fundamentals just didn't realize it yet.
Don’t lie man , I know nothing of crypto and I understand only the word ethereum
I guess I’m the only one who has no idea what he just said. There must be a crypto for dummies video somewhere. This video is obviously for someone that is very advanced.
Not a worry, Base Bin 🙂

Clicked on a video to introduce me to ethereum. "A coin that needs no introduction"...
I love how they called it a 3 Phase approach but then labeled them Phase 0 - 2 and in reality, it's like 4 phases
If I don't stake my current ETH and ETH2.0 comes out in 2 years time, will my ETH1.0 still be working? Will it still be a separate coin, or will 1.0 and 2.0 merge and all my ETH1.0 becomes ETH2.0 automatically?
Yes can you please answer this
That is an excellent question. @exodus please could you respond? Thank you!
Edit 10 min later: Just realised they actually responded to that under a different comment from WorkTheMiddle WithCrypto; ETH 1.0 and ETH 2.0 will be the same and only thing once the updated version is launched.
Thank you for the question this was my concern too....
Good clear breakdown of what to expect from ETH. Waiting for its upgrade due now in June or July. Till then I'm buying the dips with ETH. End of this year we could possibly see a significant increase
Thanks for breaking it down in a simple way👍

This is my biggest holding as a digital asset. I believe ethereum will be the most used overall within this space but it will have competition over the next few years.
We don't blame you! It's by far the most used smart contract blockchain. Just imagine how crazy the space will be when Ethereum 2.0 releases 🤩.

Can you please explain what’s Ethe 32? Thank you very much in advance for details when replying! Great video!
Hi Luis! Great question. If you wanted to become a validator to stake Ethereum, you'd need a minimum of 32 ETH. We don't have details on our site, but you can refer to Ethereum's guide to staking here: ethereum.org/en/eth2/staking/ Let me know if you need more info. Thanks for watching. 🙏 -MW
Is ethereum 2.0 the same as the ETH?
Yes eth 2.0 is un update for ethereum, the ticker for ethereum is ETH
@@viralmonkeyz will this not become another hard fork if the developers starts to have different views again? 32ETH is quite expensive right now.

This was quite interesting to watch! given ETH's high gas fees and the oncoming release of Cardano (erc20 converter) and also the recent run-up with Binance Chain, I foresee an exodus for Ethereum and would take profits and swap ETH to ADA and BNB to hedge against ETH not being able to fully deliver scalability until 2022?. Thoughts?
One thing for a fact is at this point currently day traders and exchanges would be making a hell of a profit
Thanks, very informative video .

I don’t know what this is I was just trying to buy a crypto domain and I did it!
I’m confused
Another Great video bro thanks any idea if and when exodus will have eth2.0 staking??
So to my understanding, the availability to stake only be available to people who have 32 eth and become validator‘s? Doesn’t feel entirely fair
If you don't have 32 eth you can join a staking pool with a lesser amount.
This is entirely the same thing as having an almost 0 percent chance of mining bitcoin on your own with limited resources. This way you can gain eth without needing an expensive mining rig.
Coinbase emailed me and ask if I want to be put on the waitlist for Eth2.0. I'm confused as to why would I need to be put on a wait list for it if Eth is the same item/coin as 2.0 will be. Any feed back?
Yeah idk I'd ignore that email.
Nah definitely sign up for that if you aren't currently staking. What the e-mail is about is how Coinbase is going to be offering it's own ETH staking with a 7.5%(?i think) return. True it's less than staking it yourself, but if you're only invested with a fraction or one or two Ether tokens, it's worth it rather than just having it sit in your Coinbase doing nothing but fluctuate with the market.
@@patrickmcconville7856 Hi newbie here, what is “staking.” Thanks for your time. 🙂
Hey quick question id appreciate you answering ( im new to ETH) if the ethereum network is going to cost users “gas fees” to use DAPS and social media applications etc on the ETH network then whats the appeal and why would people choose it over the current internet? ( apart from it being decentralised) any info would be appreciated. Thanks n keep up the great content 👍
Why would you run something which doesn't benefit of the network on the network?
Great video and thank you.

@@exodus Will do. Ill be lookin out/ lovin this bullrun
Thank you so much for this update on what is going on with ETH !
There is conflict between ETH miners and developers for dapps. ETH miners want the network to be congested so that they earn lots of expensive transaction fees. The devs want low transaction fees. The miners want ETH 2.0 to be delayed as much as possible while the devs want to migrate but cant since there is nothing bigger than ETH. I really do think Cardano will be the real winner here once it gets the ERC 20 token converter launched.
Hi there, thanks for sharing your thoughts. There is certainly quite a bit of competition heating up among the different networks and stakeholders. Personally, I think that this is great for advancing the ecosystem. We're eager to see what happens! -SY

Will eth 2.0 have a coin like etherum that we can buy and sell on crypto exchanges
Thanks for the highly informative vid. On a first glance, the use of shards seems like compartmentalizing transactions, something like the use of files and folders, with the difference being live transactions like functions playing within functions, all at the same time, :).
Nice.
still not understanding this one, but i like your videos to explain these coins
So, if i don’t have 32 ETH, staking one or two ETH won’t mean much when 2.0 is released??
Thank you for explaining this . There is scope for breaking it down in simpler language. Hallam in always sunny Barbados.
Newbie: Whats the potential impact of 2.0 on ETH ? anything?
My guess: wider adoption, less environmental impact and overall more confidence in crypto currency.
would it be a separate coin.?
@@travismckinnon2494 na, just rolls over
sorry I should explain it more than you just taking my word ha think about it like the bank getting an upgrade... Ethereum upgrades to Ethereum 2.0 but ether (coin) stays the same - only difference is its more encrypted and on a higher security blockchain with faster processing on transactions
I have eth and usdt on same address.
What would happen to my funds when eth 2.0 comes out BECAUSE I AM GOING TO THE CAVE FOR 5 YEARS DONT ASK WHY.
JUST TELL ME WILL MY FUNDS BE SAFE WHEN I COME BACK???
What's (J. D) coin it's worth to buy pls let's know me thanks
there would be the possibility to dupe the coins in exodus? or it wont work like that
Generally, cryptocurrency works on blockchain technology, which as a whole can be described as a public ledger that is agreed upon by consensus. Therefore, any parallel ledgers or chains would not be agreed upon so you'll never get duplicated coins, transactions or balances.
If you're just referring to a visual duplication error (seeing twice the amount of something you normally see, like double BTC) in your Exodus wallet, you can write us at support[@]exodus.com and we can help figure out what's going on. This is highly unlikely, but I guess you never know.

Love your Wallet Exodus, keep it going
Thank you for all of the love and support, Alberto. We're just happy to make life easier for you. -SR
Me and my dad ,who just came in the crypto space, are thinking well to buy ETH or not
So can u tell your opinions
Always buy some ETH, whether you just wanna HODL, trade (since most tokens are on the Ethereum network so you can pay fee's), or use any of the DeFi projects mentioned in the video.
Does investing in ETH coins translate to investing in the Etherium blockchain?
That's a great question Phil. The short answer is at this time, not really. The blockchain itself is a public ledger that anyone can access. Your ETH holdings do signal your belief in the network. I guess you could say the miners are the ones really invested in the network because they directly receive the monetary rewards from solving a block. This will change though in ETH 2.0 when anyone can stake 32 ETH to become a node validator and receive the staking rewards. Did that help? -Kris
@@exodus thank you so much for the reply
@@exodus how can I stake 32 eth?
@@exodus Do you know if miners will still be able to earn rewards in the classical mining way? Or will staking 32 ETH be the only way to generate new Ether? And will a single person be able to buy multiple stakes of 32 ETH? Won't this make the network prone to centralization by having only the rich take control of the majority of stake nodes?
hmm.. so the "Shard Chains" operate like a buffer?
10-15 years down the road we will regard Ethereum and the blockchain technology to be as revolutionary as the Internet. It's amazing to see what's being accomplished with decentralized finance - and this is just the beginning. Can't wait to see how it evolves
This sounds like miners will be pushed completely out. This will not go over well with a great many people.
But can't miners get rid of all of that hardware and expensive electric bill and just stake what they've mined?
i just started on this, id like to know what would happen with bitcoin if this change happnes, what are the miners going to mine? as far as i know they can mine other coins, right? i guess they wont earn the same but is just a a matter of time for other coins to increase, right? if someone wants to buy a pc to mine what would u think, good or bad idea right now?
At current GPU prices? A bad idea. Just invest into crypto.
Great explanation Exodus! Love your products and work. Thank you!

Will this make Ethereum 1.0 price drop?

great video. I wonder if the high Gas prices are a threat to this great project
eth 2.0 should solve that

I read that eth will be upgraded to eth 2.0
@@michellevelasquez7873 yes. I've learned a lot since then. Thanks you though.
Do you know when eth 2.0 is released if we can stake less than 1 eth?
Hey there 👋,
At the moment, it seems like the 32 ETH requirement is here to stay. Fear not, though! There are options for those who don't have 32 ETH. If you have less than that, you'll be able to add a smaller stake to staking pools. Some companies can do it all on your behalf, so you won't have to worry about staying online. @@exodus Thanks :)
Eth 2.0 won't be ready for at least 2 years, meanwhile Cardano's smart contracts are coming end of this year and is already PoS. Seems like Cardano has a better foundation to build on and more momentum. Does anyone else think Cardano might just be straight-up better than Eth by the time Eth finishes this roadmap?
There are a couple of smart contract platforms which are already Proof of Stake. The Ethereum advantage is purely its network effect and market cap. We've already seen other tokens spread to other networks such as Algorand to take advantage of greater transaction throughput.
Honestly, we've been waiting a long time for the migration to 2.0. I remember conversations in 2016 about it but you know the bigger the ship the more difficult it is to overcome the inertia to change directions. -Kris
Well... You know what they say. It's better to be first than to be better

32 ETH lol. I guess I won’t ever be able to make coin in staking then..
You can stake less than 32, 32 is only if you're doing it alone otherwise you can join a pool with people to make up 32.
cant put a time limit on the future of finance - accumulate and let the team build
Is Ethereum 2 all ready operating 100% ???
Will it reduce uniswap fees?
Hi Aliyu, Ideally it will free up the entire system, including reducing fees, but since no one has seen it in action we have no idea. The staking deposit contract is live and there is a soft launch scheduled for Dec. 1st. But again, it's been talked about for years and I personally will believe it when I see it. -Kris
Hope mining rates aren't affected too high
I don't think it's right around the corner. You said that they say the last phase is very much in research and will be released after 2021. It's very speculative.
Would current ETH coins become shard coins after 2.0? Also would there be separate beacon coins or everything converted under a different umbrella coin? Sorry for all the questions, it's just curiosity.
Hey Vin, The entire current ETH network will become it's own shard on the 2.0 network. As far as token migrations to the 2.0 flavor. I really have no idea. It's still a ways off. -Kris
so my understanding is that people who run bitcoin and ethereum aren't able to buy their own super computers so they're using people's computers instead? what kind of calculations are they running and why is it so important?
Hmmm, I'm not sure I understand the question. You will need some kind of hardware investment to become a validator or a miner. Large BTC mining firms have thousands of machines running at any given time and it's not profitable for a single miner to compete, this is where mining pools come in where you rent your mining power to a larger group and a share of any block rewards. Mining for ETH can be done with graphics cards in your computer, most still run in pools. If you see any ads for renting mining power or cloud mining, run away, You would be much better off, just using the funds to buy assets. Does that help? -Kris
@@exodus i'm asking what are the people in charge of ethereum using people's computers for? running some complex mathematical calculations? i understand how people are getting paid a certain amount of money for leaving their computers on 24/7, i'm just asking what are those calculations for, are they doing medical research of something, or astrophysics, or economics etc
why can't anyone get to the point and speak ENGLISH LOL for slow ppl like me??
if I buy a share at 2k$now, WHAT CAN I DO WITH THAT???? do I hold it for long term? do I trade it daily?
how can I spend it? how can I get cash?

I think u can. Only buy Ethereum 2 but not sell it when try shows $000
Does this mean that my current Ethereum will turn into Ethereum 2.0 in my wallet?
Great question! Yes. ETH 1.0 holders have nothing to worry about during the merge. All ETH on the Ethereum blockchain will migrate to the Beacon Chain, becoming ETH 2.0. This will mark the end of the proof of work consensus algorithm on Ethereum. We can't wait for this. 🔥

so if i own ETH itll update to 2.0 orrrrrrrr
So by starting october 2021, expect the flooding of gpu on the market 😅
Does that mean my ETH 1.0 coins will double in value to ETH 2.0?
Not exactly, David. I wish that were the case though! ETH 2.0 is just a name sadly, and a whole new protocol. Maybe the market will be kind to us all and double our ETH 1.0 holdings? As an aside, your Ether now is going to be your Ether on ETH 2.0, but the way we create and send transactions will change.
