      This is the problem, why are there "fans" of an alright brand of Teabags in the first place? Or fans of the marketing used to try and part you from some money, you don't see Chickens wearing KFC merch, these companies think of you as some data points representing the wallet on legs they care about.
      There may have been some authentic British companies like PG tips once, maybe some authentic smaller ones around still but for the most part they are gone.

    • @SomeBoiOnline
      @SomeBoiOnline  Před 3 měsíci +18

      Monkey certainly garnered "fans" (see the Comic Relief sketch "Monkey's Monumental Mission") as he was simply a character that people enjoyed watching on television.
      The ads were like short sitcom episodes, so like any good comedy, I suppose people wanted merchandise to express their enjoyment of the character. You're right though, that brand authenticity just isn't there anymore and that's what I wanted to highlight.

      They massively oversimplify discussions about mental health in a way that isn’t particularly helpful too imo. I think it reflects the bland societal environment of places like London where there’s ceased to be much that’s authentically British because it’s an identity-less global mishmash now. And since that’s the place the people making the ads & running the company probably live, it’s what they think will resonate with the public. @DiscoDoctor Před 3 měsíci +10

      @@SomeBoiOnline Completely agree. I would argue that’s one of the things wrong with most adverts media these days. There seems to be more focus on the person that the product! In the ad with Ashley Walters, they don’t even discuss the flavour of the tea or how nice it is! Just his problems and mental health.
      Think back to the days of Monkey and Al. They weren’t actually talking about themselves, the focus was on them trying out the tea and ending up on an adventure. I always love the advent of them coming in from the rain, putting their feet up, and having a cup of tea. I think it is something we could all relate to at some point, and that cozy image sticks in my mind. It told a wholesome little story.
      Then we have influencers who only talk about themselves and have an unmistakable fakeness that was never present in the Al and Monkey ads. (Despite Monkey being a puppet, he is far more real than these people). She takes a quick swig of the tea and that’s it. The self-obsessed narrative leaves little room for the actual thing they are supposedly trying to sell.

I am a gen z person myself and being brought up in the early 2000's with older tv shows like only fools and horses and the flumps, I always have, and always will prefer the charm and style of this kind of content than the bland, unimaginative, corporate style of advertising. That might be the idea. You know what corporations are like. They're always rebranding and killing off popular products. Maybe they're not interested in making tea, just selling off the company in a fire sale.
