    URGENT! VERY, VERY IMPORTANT!!! If you're like me, you thought, 'Well, my dog is so important to me, I'm going to spend the extra money and by raw salmon instead of canned.' DO NOT DO THIS unless the salmon is frozen for at least 24hrs. The parasites that sometimes hits humans (curable) from undercooked salmon, can be deadly to dogs. Freezing the salmon kills the parasite. Or ... stick to canned.

    • @laurennichole737

      Just get farmed salmon. Stay away from wild caught unless it's been frozen or you plan on freezing. My local bulk food store sells salmon that's been previously frozen

      I literally just fed my dog raw salmon today. A good amount too. I don’t know if it was previously frozen. He’s sleeping next to me right now and he has seemed perfectly fine since eating earlier today but now I’m worried please tell me what I should look out for / pay attention to in my dog I do not want him to get this parasite you’re speaking of

      @@TiffBellini I don't think you should worry. It happens in humans once in a blue moon so just pop that salmon in the freezer in the future. As for what to look for, I'm going to copy and paste. These symptoms show up 6-10 days after ingestion and, if they do, get him to the vet ASAP. It's treatable, it's not a death sentence ... unless untreated, of course.
      If identified in a timely manner, salmon poisoning is treatable. The symptoms are similar to those of a gastrointestinal illness. If your dog has roamed from your sight and exhibits these symptoms because he may have eaten something you are unaware of, or if your pet has ingested raw or undercooked fish, immediate veterinary care is crucial. Typical symptoms are listed below:
      Vomiting
      Diarrhea
      Fever, which will reach limits around 104 Fahrenheit
      Loss of appetite, which may result in weight loss
      Swollen lymph nodes
      Weakness
      Depression
      Discharge from the eyes or nose
      Dehydration

    Just saw your video now and here in Germany raw feeding for dogs is so different. For example: we mostly use 80:20, means 80% muscle meat, organs, raw meaty bones etc, and 20% vegetables and fruit. We also calculate the amount of food per day different. We usually calculate with 1,5% - 2,5% of the body weight in kilograms. So for example: a 30kg dog with 2% of its body weight would get 600g of food each day.

    My ferrett is on a raw diet and he has never been more healthy. I did so much research before switchjng him because his coat wasnt soft or fluffy on kibble and his weight fluctuated so much on kibble. Been about half a year and he is at such a healthy weight and OMGGG his coat is so thick and soft! Hes not as itchy any more and has more energy. Not to mention unlike kiddle he gets excited when i fill his bowl and goes eight to it where as with kibble he just didnt care. Most ferrett kibbles have multiple ingredients they shouldnt have such as plant fibers and grains. Although they say its ok in small ammounts in kibble it still isnt good. Ferretts are STRICTLY carnivore only due to how their digestive tracts work. He is 100% raw meat and ive done a lot of work on making the perfect ratio for him and his preference. Now that i know what he likes its actually easy to prep it all to freeze. So happy my big boy is happy and healthy now! Also for anyone curious i order from raw feeding miami! They have a TON of options and have good sales on stuff too!

    Question! Your cheat sheet shows that the amount of food given for an averagely active dog should be 2.5% of the dogs weight. Based on that, I've been feeding my 40-pound dog (whose weight i wanted to maintain) 1 pound (16oz) per day. But this recipe for a 40-pound dog is 22 oz. Can you explain why?

    • @PawsofPrey
      @PawsofPrey  Před rokem +2

      Great question! So the calories and weight of food don't always match up. I like to tell beginners to pay attention to the weight of food only in the beginning because it's a lot easier to follow for that time being. The formula to figuring out the weight of food your dog needs daily is VERY general, but it's a good start. Once you start getting into the calorie realm, the weight of food starts mattering less. For example, if you're feeding a meal of really fatty cuts, you'll probably reach their daily caloric intake with less food, and if you're feeding super lean meats, you'll need to feed a lot more food to meet those calories! Does that make sense?

      3 pounds beef (90% lean)
      8 ounces beef heart
      5 ounces beef liver
      20 ounces chicken gizzards
      3 cans sardines in water, minus the juice

      3 ounces red bell pepper

      Pour into loaf, casserole, or muffin pans.
      Bake at 325 for 30 to 60 minutes depending on size of pan; should be lightly done, not overcooked (juicy in the center). If your pet has a beef or chicken allergy, turkey can be substituted.

They are 14 and 15 with no health issues. I am not saying that this is right but I have not seen adverse effects. I wholeheartedly agree with your approach. Pasture raised eggs and poultry necks I'm sure provide the proper amount of iodine, but since not everyone can source pasture raised meats, and I don't want owners continuously feeding neck because of potently providing too much of the thyroid hormones, I suggest kelp. Pasture raised and grass fed meat will be so much higher in things like zinc, vitamin D, vitamin E, omega 3s! That's what I strive to feed over adding other things to the diet

One thing you could try for variety is chicken backs. They are a wonky shape and discourage choking. They are becoming my favorite RMB. So you could give those a try. I would not overly worry about the necks but giving a back occasionally could be helpful. RFM has duck frames also but they are too hard for my small dogs.

    I need help, wisdom in feeding a small dog, 12-14 #s. I have been feeding him cooked meets.
    He is constipated right now. I just gave him kibble w/ coconut oil, turkey and broth to try to help.
    I would appreciate your input.
    Our son told us that we need an enzyme supplement to help digest the raw meat.
    Your recipe seems complicated... so many elements to include. Certainly a dog would not have all those ingredients in a simple carnivore diet unless they are feasting on an entire animal.
    I am considering that kibble is far from less than ideal for a healthy dog. My husband is not convinced.

      I'm so sorry for the confusion. Spinach does not cause anemia, but anemia may occur if you RELY on it for iron in the diet (as in, you don't feed much animal-based ingredients for iron, you only rely on plant-based) spinach is still just fine to feed for fiber and small amounts of trace minerals!

    My dog had an upset tummy for 3 days so tonight instead of her usual kibble I prepared a little meal for her consisting of porridge oats with a splash of goats milk, a little bit of spinach, some sardines in sunflower oil (2 Tbps) and just a little bit of kibble as filler to thicken it up, she absolutely wolfed it down and even had the audacity to go over to my other dogs bowl for more kibble. Definitely want to switch them to a raw diet though to maintain their health. I’ll be trying this recipe very soon! What would be handy is if you could add to the description the cost per portion (average) so I and others know how much it will cost to feed their dog this on a daily basis. Thanks!

    Can I have advice on how to improve my dog’s meals? I’m slowly switching my dog over to raw food. For reference he’s a large, 80lb 2 year old pitbull/boxer mix. So far I have:
    • Ground beef
    • Chicken thigh/leg meat
    • Beef liver
    • Chicken hearts
    • Unseasoned and homemade chicken & bone broth
    • Apple slices OR
    • Sweet potato
    • Vitamin E (sometimes)
    I have chicken feet but he won’t eat them so we’ll use it in our broths. I’m planning on buying some canned sardines and spinach. How can I improve this to make sure he gets everything he needs? Thanks!!

    • @nogames8982
      @nogames8982 Před rokem

      Is he too skinny? Is he too heavy? That's what you go by. Some dogs always seem hungry and they would eat 24 seven if you let them. Put some of the raw food in a Kong or a slow feeder bowl so he hast to work for it, and it takes longer to eat it.

    • @khristinamarie9837
      @khristinamarie9837 Před rokem +1

      @No Games no, he is not too skinny. His vet said he could lose about 5 lbs. I got him at the vet in 2020, and he was 26lbs... a little to skinny, in my opinion. He loves to beg, so maybe that is why he seems hungry. I just wanted to make sure I was calculating the right way and giving him enough food. It says 14 oz a day. I started a week ago feeding him a brand called viva raw dog food.

      @Sittin Pretty Jamberry Nails so I give my 35lb dog 8oz in the morning and 8oz at night. He could lose 2 or 3 lbs, but he is not overweight. He is pretty active. That's probably why my dog is super hungry by dinner time. Yeah, if it's says 22oz, maybe try it and split it between morning and night and see how he does.

      What I’ve been doing with my puppy who loves bones is holding onto one end and making her chew pieces off so she won’t get too big a piece and has to really crunch through it and swallow each piece before I let her take another bite. This would probably work well with stuff like chicken backs, necks, etc where there’s quite a few pieces that they can rip off. It is a bit more work but does become kind of a fun game and helps you bond with your dog too! Now if she ever does get too big of a piece by accident, I can tell her to come and drop it in my hand and she will give it to me so I can help her instead of eating it too quickly or running off with it. Hope this helps and good luck!
