    Awesome story! Before i came home, my life had little islands of "the warm thrill of confusion", fun and excitement, in a sea of darkness and despair. After returning to the Catholic faith, my life now has the opposite: a sea of limitless direction, purpose, and peace, despite little islands of sadness here and there.

    We converts simply figured out that the Bible (the NT) is a book about The Church. Protestantism however is merely a church about a book.

    • @quietwyatt4045
      @quietwyatt4045 Před 3 lety +1

      @Finance Simply Explained With the exception of the 4 Gospels (and probably Jude & Revelation), the entire rest of the New Testament - from Acts through 3 John - is concerned almost exclusively with the creation of the Church: What is the Church? How does one become a Christian, and what do Christians believe? Therefore, The Bible (in specific, The New Testament) is a book about the formation and the ways of being in The Catholic Church and predates The Catholic Church. Because the Protestant faiths hold The Bible to be superior to the Church, theirs is a Church about the Bible rather than seeing the Bible as being a book about The Church.

    • @quietwyatt4045
      @quietwyatt4045 Před 3 lety +1

      @Finance Simply Explained Protestants do not adhere to Confession which is odd considering how prominent a place The Bible holds for them. In John 20:22-23, Jesus highly emphasized one essential aspect of the priestly ministry of the apostles: To Forgive men’s sins in the person of Christ- _”Whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven, whose sins you retain are retained.”_ implied here is the need for either a verbal or written confession since the only way the apostles could either forgive or retain sins is by first hearing those sins confessed, and then making a judgment. As for the rest of the teachings you mentioned, an even cursory reading of Matthew 16:18-19 will make clear the basis of the matter.

    Wonderful talk :) I'm a convert to Catholicism too (but from what I consider a secular Protestant background -- raised to not REALLY believe in any of it as objectively true, but still to have some cultural awareness of one protestant interpretation of Christianity). Actually really eye-opening at 24:00 when you say you were a college-educated atheist who didn't know the difference between the Old and New Testament. I sometimes forget how much background knowledge I take for granted, that other people literally don't know. I sometimes assume even in a post-Christian society, that cultural heritage still keeps people with some basic common reference points -- but I guess not.

    My philosophy professor boyfriend told me that smart, educated people don’t believe in God. I was crushed but I also saw myself as belonging to that “educated” world and eventually I did succumb to atheism. I kept waiting for the peace and relief to wash over me like he said it would once I gave up belief in God. It never did and the years I spent as an atheist were the most anxiety ridden and angriest years of my life. There truly is no peace without God in your heart.
    Atheism hooks a lot of young people with the lie that only uneducated yokels believe in God. Atheism is a tribal mentality. Btw, the philosophy professor talked a good game about principles, integrity etc, but he was pretty depraved. It’s really hard to be good without God.

I went to the U of Toronto and was able to look directly into the question of God's existence insofar as it could be known by reason alone. And .. its a piece of cake. We all naturally suspect there's a God or tend to believe it.. a single cell is to fantastic. .. etc, but the arguments .. Ed Feser a philosopher of note has excellent video's on the existence of God based upon the common sense view of Aristotle.. Father of western science.. Look into it as hard and deep as you like and you will not be disappointed. Kreeft is a wonderful intelligent philosopher as well. You''' probably be amazed at how dumb atheism looks afterwards. The cult-ure around us is dummied down 17th century materialism.. and that's dumb. May the force be with you!!! And have fun.

    As an atheist, I have to admit, whenever I come to a video like this, it's always with a little bit of anxiety. I think "Why would an atheist become Catholic? Does she know something I don't? Is my worldview about to be annihilated?" I don't seriously expect that, but there's always a part of me that wonders, "what if?" Then I see this video and it's so bad that I'm actually disappointed. She believes in God because she felt such strong love for her child and it was so strong that it just HAD to be supernatural? Even if you're Catholic and you agree with her conclusion, really ask yourself if that's a valid thought process. Because it seems to me like someone who values feelings over facts rather than a truth-seeker. The rest of the speech isn't much better. (i mean, your trying to find answers about something supernatural, a being (God) with knowledge way over human knowledge).
      The least we can do when trying to find these types of answers, is to open our minds to new perspectives. You wont find answers if you try to prove them wrong even before beginning to research.

      Mindy I think you’ll find it useful to remember that this was not a formal debate or an academic lecture. This is a testimony, which will include a lot of anecdotal evidence. If it doesn’t speak to you, that’s fine, but that doesn’t make the long intellectual tradition of Catholicism invalid.

    I'm sorry, but if your story is honest and truthful, it seems like what you were attributing to "atheism" is what you should attribute ignorance. You even said yourself that you feel like you were calling yourself atheist was so that you would "seem smart", just like you may have hunted Gucci-products to "fit in". You made that comparison, too. You have also admitted and realized that those engineers, doctors and scientists ARE smart, and can only achieve real results by having methods to actually find out what truth is. Which is why THEY are atheists. You wanting to fit in by means of ignorance only discredits yourself and makes you most and foremost be untruthful towards yourself. This was a rather sad thing to listen to.

      There are many atheists who are not engineers, doctors, or scientists. She is speaking from one type of atheism among many. She has shown great strength in exposing her vulnerability of having been that certain type of atheist, and the point is she is not that type anymore. Also, even atheists who are engineers, doctors, and scientists don't have all the truth. Some methods don't work out and some results are flawed. That's why there can be false positives on blood tests or doctors who give women birth control to "balance their hormones" which often times causes them to hemorrhage. In the case of Jennifer, she actually did use a method to get herself out of that situation of "ignorant" gucci atheism and it clearly bore real results for her life that she now shares openly and vulnerably. Humanity is flawed as a whole but it is "those engineers, doctors and scientists" who believe their methods and results are truth because of how they affect certain people, regardless of how they affect different people, who are truly ignorant. Everyone could use a healthy dose of humility and honesty in their fields instead of self-righteousness at the expense of true health and justice. I won't even go into the political climate of our world today and how much THEY need to take an honest and hard look at their own lives and could use some humility. And yes, Jennifer was untruthful towards herself as an atheist which is why she is no longer an atheist. Atheism might not look like gucci atheism to another atheist but the same rule applies that humility is a precursor to any truth-seeking.

      +Adele Dominiguez, It seems like you have the same misconception as Jennifer, even though I tried to point out the problem. Being or claiming to be an atheist gives you neither any knowledge or super-powers. Living with a rational mind and appreciating methodology such as the scientific method merely makes you an atheist by default, as it is the rational conclusion you come to given any [to date] theistic arguments.
      "She is speaking from one type of atheism among many" doesn't make any sense as a sentence. You are attributing 'atheist' to something else than the rejection of theistic claims.
      However, she clearly stated the reasons for Calling herself an atheist. But in her own words, it seemed like she merely "chose a position" without understanding whether or not there is a method of even judging what the default position should be. Something that an agnostic would say. She seemed to lack the ability to even reason her stance in any rational manner.
      That being said, anyone can of course freely call themselves 'atheist' or 'agnostic' or 'theist' regardless of their reasons of doing so. That is not the problem.
      The problem is that she started from her own ignorance and attributed it to others, as she thought "being an atheist" somehow makes other people share her ignorance, "because they are atheist too". This is extremely irrational."She has shown grat strength in exposing her vulnerability..."
      This is completely irrelevant. What someone feels or doesn't feel does not change the facts about the universe or whether or not one is being ignorant.There is no scientific progress made on researchers showing their vulnerability. The only thing that matters are rational arguments.However, if one is to preach and get emotions, compassion and the trust of others, then yes, showing vulnerability is great. Which is why con-artists, sects/churches/testimonials can be driven on random nonsense, because humans are herd-animals and act accordingly to the pain of others."In the case of Jennifer, she actually did use a method to get herself out of that situation of ignorant' Gucci atheism.."No she didn't. She kept her ignorance and swayed the other way for the exact same reason. She chose a stance from an ignorant/irrational viewpoint, and change it to another for the very same reason.

      @@JWAM I'm not sure I fully understand your claim that humans are "herd-animals" who react merely according to the pain of others. This seems to extract the "ratio" from human beings, in which case contradicts your claim of Jennifer speaking irrationally. Would she not then be acting as a human being? Could you clarify what your understanding of a human being is?

    • @JWAM
      @JWAM Před 5 lety +1

      @@adeledominguez6203 I'm sorry, in return, I'm not sure I fully understand the question / reasoning.
      I did not say that humans are animals who "merely react according to the pain of others". What I said was that as humans are herd-animals, just like other primates and a variety of other mammals. It has been beneficial for us to care about our peers. This is something that is controlled by our emotions, and it evidently creates very strong bonds, and it has helped us survive as a group (or groups). She is acting very human indeed. As are the listeners who "feel her vulnerability". This is EXACTLY the reason why the scientific method is so extremely clear on the point we are better of realizing that we are complete morons when it comes to rationality. It is not our greatest skill.
      If we burnt all books and tried to "erase all knowledge", and started from the beginning. After, say.. 10000 years, we would have a new set of "random" thousands of religions and cultures. New "bibles". But the books on science would eventually be the same as before we burnt them. Because it's the reliable way of drawing conclusions that will not get tainted by opinions, beliefs, "strong feelings" or authorative people.

      @@JWAM If we are complete morons, why are we the ones drawing those scientific conclusions? If you can't trust your rationality, there's no reason to believe in the truth of your own thoughts. I'm glad you're taking a non-scientific assumption that there is a regularity about the universe that will continue into the future. Why does the same thing happen tomorrow as it does today? Why does gravity exist same tomorrow as today? Why doesn't it change? Our answers to this are based on non-scientific assumptions. Please refer to Bertrand Russell's "non-overlapping magisteria (NOMA)." For example, Aristotle makes a distinction between his Physics and his Metaphysics.

    This video makes me sad. What a waste of a mind. This is what happens when you go "seeking for truths" but refuse to let your beliefs be _disciplined_ by established truths! She keeps calling atheism a "worldview." But it's no more a "worldview" than lack of belief or disbelief in ghosts or Bigfoot or astrology. As a wise atheist once said: "Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away."
    She goes off the rails again when she paints "modern atheism" as mostly fallen to "Scientism," which is at first "common" among New Atheists then "rampant." The belief that "everything must be provable by the scientific method." That's ridiculous and shows her philosophical ineptitude. It's a stratagem employed by a lot of scummy apologists: they piss on reason. They don't comprehend that science is just an extension of reason, and reason is where the battle is mostly fought, not science. I _believe_ that no human ever ran a one-minute mile: 60 MPH for 60 seconds. Can I prove that through the scientific method? No. But is it a rational belief? Yes. I _believe_ that if I draw 4 aces in a poker hand, I'm going to win. Can I prove that through the scientific method? No. But is it rational to bet big? Yes. I _believe_ there is no Bigfoot. Can I prove that with science? No. Is it a rational belief anyway? Yes. On I could go all day. Now you see: reason can logically take us where science cannot tread. Perfectly rational beliefs don't require proof, merely rational justification. She's falsely trying to divide people into atheists - who "believe nothing that can't be proved through science" and theists whose beliefs are free to go beyond science. But as I've shown, to caricature atheists as restricting their beliefs to "lab verification" is a straw-man. I _believe_ there is no god/goat hybrid, Pan. I _believe_ there is no god/elephant hybrid, Ganesha. These beliefs are beyond science, but are they irrational? No? I also believe there is no god/ape hybrid, Jesus. Is that irrational? What's the diff?
    Ask this armchair philosopher how many gods she believes there are. One. The biblical god. So ipso facto she believes that Allah does _not_ exist. Can she rationally justify that belief? Not without reflecting negatively on her own beliefs. Pathetic!
    So what changed her from atheist to theist? A personal anecdote told by her boyfriend and strong maternal feelings. Sorry, but that's not enough! Plenty of others have had "transformative" or "transcendent" experiences with other gods. Are they valid, too?
    It's easy to shut the the mouths of these ignorant, brainwashed hypocristians. Just challenge them to justify their "God is good" belief with a list of acts their god would never do to anyone. That's right: examples of acts that cause so much pain, suffering, misery and grief that although their "bad devil" might commit such acts against people, their "good" god _never_ would. Failure to give any examples shows they believe their god might do anything to anyone, any time for any reason. THAT'S NOT GOOD! It also shows that they can't differentiate their god and devil _by their actions!_ But as soon as they give a single example, they may never again claim that "Man can't judge God" cuz they just did! That green-lights anyone to compare what they say their god would never do to what God _does_ do in the bible: kill and order killed men, women, children and babies by the millions.
    Here's her: "We believe things all the time that you can't prove in a laboratory." So she seems to get it. She just doesn't understand that the non-lab belief that there are no gods is perfectly rational anyway.
    She had her religious conversion feeling love for her baby. This is illustrative. God is a feeling that comes from within, not a being that exists without! That explains why Christians regularly disagree on the qualities of God. Is God OK with sex before marriage? With moderate drinking? With abortion in some cases? With smoking tobacco? Weed? With voluntary sterilization? With the Sunday Sabbath? With the teaching of Evolution? With corporal punishment of kids? Christians disagree on all these and most other issues. So they're either tuned into different gods, tuned into the same god giving them contradictory statutes or...God is a feeling, not a being. It should be obvious which is true. Not through science. Pure reason.
    First she impugns "scientism:" this straw-man she made up who restricts all beliefs to the demonstrable. But at the same time she ignores well-established scientific conclusions. Here are the questions to make her squirm! Science has shown that the Earth is only ~1/3 the age of the universe and thus the two were not created "In the beginning." Is science or the bible wrong? Anthropology is clear: we came out of Africa, not some garden in the Middle East. Which is wrong, the bible or the science? Medical science has completely dismissed demon possession as a cause of any illness. So...what was Jesus going around casting out? Genetics has shown beyond any reasonable doubt: all life is related through descent. There goes Adam, Eve, Original Sin, the Fall and any need for a bloody and torturous "sacrifice" of "atonement." Unless science is wrong. Furthermore, unless our geologists are total incompetents or all in on a big conspiracy, there was no worldwide flood. Yet in the Matthew gospel, Jesus indicates he believes in the Flood. Was Jesus wrong (and thus can't be a god)? Or science? Or were those words put into Jesus' mouth by the anonymous author of Matthew? If that's true then it's rational to believe that all Jesus' words were put into his mouth by the gospel authors. The sciences of Egyptology and Palestinian archeology have reached a consensus which agrees with the best biblical scholarship: ancient Israel was never in Egypt. So there was no Moses; no Ten Plagues; no Exodus; no Wanderings and no Conquest. Yet these non-events are frequently alluded to in the Prophets and the New Testament as historical. All wrong. Unless science is.
