@@maggiescarlet Also, I use you tube premium and if I have it on in background, or even with screen off, it still counts. So I could be editing photographs whilst listening to music and it counts that as two lots of screen time. So one hour becomes two because two apps are logged. Honestly think “screen time” is the wrong measuring stick for this.

    • @faithharbour
      @faithharbour Před 16 dny +7

@@maggiescarlet I replied to you but it disappeared after I edited a spelling error - anyhoo, I discovered that CZcams premium running in the background is still classed as screen time - so I could be editing photos with music playing and Apple will count it twice as two different apps - so one hour doing two things gets classed as two hours. Interesting I thought!

After watching this again and going for a walk, a few questions came to mind. How much screen time is actually unhelpful or harmful? If it keeps you from connecting from friends and family, or sends you scurrying down rabbit holes chasing mentally unhealthy topics then that is obviously not good.
If I read books on my iPad when I'm travelling, that to me is quality time. Yes, I prefer a physical book in my hands but that is not always possible. And is listening to an educational podcast on your phone qualitatively worse than listening to a similar topic on the radio?
My hobby is photography and that requires screen time to process and edit the photos. It's a process I enjoy along with actually taking the photos in the first place. It's something that I find important to my mental health. Thanks for talking on this topic Cinzia, it's given me a lot to think about.

Physical breaks are important. I used to take a twenty minute walk twice a day when I was working. It actually aided my productivity because often a good idea or an approach I hadn't considered would pop into my head. Now I'm retired, I walk regularly or take my camera out for relaxation away from the net.

I gave up my smart phone about a year ago and deleted my social media. I use a flip phone now. It's changed many of my habits, but my screen time is still high I suspect because I work in a library and have to be on the computer a lot, even when there are no patrons to assist. That said, I think using websites on a computer at home or at work is pretty different from using them on a smart phone. It doesn't trigger the same level of impatience because content can't be consumed as quickly. Not having apps or notifications also pushes one to choose content in a deliberate manner.
I couldn't agree more about how much social media connections lack intimacy. Once I got rid of Facebook, little changed in terms of my relationships with the people who matter to me. But it opened my eyes to how few "friends" on Facebook actually count as friends. That realization stings a little when you give up social media.

Do these "average screen time" statistics that you refer to include time spent using a screen for work or school? If you have an office job, working on the computer is pretty much a guarantee. For students, using screens to research, write essays/assignments, use virtual classrooms is a necessity. I feel like screen time is getting conflated with unproductive and destructive time-wasting on a screen, when you should be mindful of what the purpose of the screen usage is.

I don't bedgrudge time spent on a screen IF I'm doing something constructive like editing videos, writing scripts, or filming. You mentioned meaningful hobbies like drawing or writing a novel, but, for many people, that still means using a screen (you can still get typewriters, but most people I know are going to write books on a word processor). Even time spent on CZcams can be beneficial if you're mostly consuming educational content, and being intentional about it (for example, I'll watch a lot of psychology or mythology videos, and then apply what I've learned to my writing). Provided you don't go down rabbitholes or use your "research" to procrastinate, learning is generally a good thing, whether it comes from a video or a book.
That said, I do incorporate non-screen related activities into my day too, like walking the dog or keeping a journal and, while screens, if used appropriately, can be good for your brain, they're still bad for you physically. Great as it is to spend my days writing scripts or books, making digital art, or learning new things, I should be exercising more. It won't matter how much exercise my brain gets, if I don't look after my body too. Even reading, for many, happens on a screen now, but we should still go for walks, where the weather permits, or even just turn on the music and dance around our living rooms.
I also recognize that some people need to cut the screens out completely, because, if they go on their phones, they WILL end up on TikTok or Instagram despite their best intentions. I'm lucky in that I don't feel drawn to more typical social media, but CZcams can be an Achilles heel for me and, even if I'm trying to watch content that's educational or inspiring, I should cut back on my time, because I could spend some of it exercising instead (or, if I really need my CZcams, I could listen to a video while I move, but sometimes it's better to disconnect completely). Sorry for the rant.
Thanks for another great video, Cinzia. I WAS startled to find I've spent two hours on Chrome, despite not remembering being on there much, so I'll try to be more mindful of what I'm looking up, and how long I'm reading mindless forums (now that I think about it, there was some time spent on reddit).

During your video I found myself actually content to be an aging Baby Boomer. I was finished with grad school before most industries could afford computerization, and in the workforce 15 years before personal computers became affordable. From my point of view, the internet, google, CZcams, and their ilk are fabulous tools for obtaining information that previously took days, weeks, or months to discover. However, they never became an important source of entertainment or socialization for me. With your CZcams channels, work towards a doctorate, research, and a long-distance relationship, I would expect your “screen time” to be high, but that doesn’t mean it’s unproductive or wasteful, if it’s in the service of those goals.

I quit everything (except youtube) in March 2021 after realising my average screen time daily was 14 hours, also I stare at a screen all day at work so I was destroying my eyesight. Although it's improved my life greatly, it's harmed my social life. All my friends look at me weirdly & treat me like an alien, anytime I'm with them they're on their phones most of the time while I prefer people watching. It's horrible how drowned society has become in the digital world, I'd give anything to live back in the 70s/80s/90s & embrace a more simple life. I really have to fight temptation to go back to that digital world, it's a legitimate addiction I don't wish on anyone.

@@Ericaaaaaaaaaa It's a vicious cycle... You're probably trying to relax and empty your mind by going on your phone, maybe you could try to meditate? If you have the space you could do a puzzle, otherwise maybe coloring? All stuff that should achieve the same relaxing results but in a more mindful way.

Move your body. Go take a walk, even a slow one and focus on your physical senses. On your walk have a vista you like to look at. For some that's a skyline, for others trees. Look at things repeatedly (a) close to you, (b) in a mid distance and (c) further away. Calibrating at different distances is good for eye health which is important for combating too much screen time.. Go without headphones and take in the sounds of your surroundings. Yes, even the honking horns. If that bothers you then you know you need someplace quieter. Connect to your senses of smell and touch, if possible. Take as along as you need
Or journal as soon as you get home to unwind and decompress. Get it out on the page. Then move on to the rest of your evening.

Why not use your phone but to listen to some audio books? Then you can move on to paper books. It is really a habit, you just have to make the initial effort. Paper books give you entertainment, knowledge, and quietness. I would also advice to start with classic fiction - there is a reason why classics are classics :)

That’s some terrifying maths. Thank you! I want to do better but chronic fatigue makes it super difficult… Essentially recently it’s been so bad, there’s so few accessible options and adhd means my lowest-energy activities are way too understimulating. I have been able to redirect myself to mostly positive screen time rather than negative though!!! The app screen zen is almost entirely responsible for that

For me, it started with a bad relationship ending but covid made it so much worse. I spent everyday on my phone for 12 hrd a day. I work in an office now and we have some pretty slow days where everyone sits on their phone. It's a small office of Gen z's means we dont socialise like our older peers, so i often have to seek out older colleagues to talk to, instead of idly sitting on my phone in silence.
I haven't kicked the screen habit. I often jump from one corner of the internet to the next. But i have decided to start implementing more physical things to do away from my phone so i am too busy to look at it. So i am going back to a martial arts class and starting to join more young adult meet up groups. The loneliness of having no irl friends is a big trigger of me being on my phone. So i am trying to find irl friends to meet up with and form connection with. Wish me luck

The only problem is all these other options cost a pretty beefy chunk of money, in USA at least(especially the getting a degree😂LOL) I had to cancel most of my subscription and activities because we can barely afford paying our bills now. Plus I can't drive and social transport is non existent. I don't live in a beautiful country side area where I can "go out and enjoy nature" I'm in an ugly suburbs with no side walks no trees and people park in the street so it's very awkward to go take walks and I have hips issues so even if I want I can only do that maybe 20 min a day... the only thing left for me to do is text messaging on my phone with my friends/family in other countries. Listening Audiobooks and Watching CZcams. It's pretty sad but I'm assuming LOADs of people are in similar situations ☹️ I wish meeting new people wasn't't so tied to paying for expensive activities but In 10 years that was the only way I made friends 😕

    BUT
    - listening music (instead of radio)
    - reading manga usually (instead a book one)
    - chatting (instead of home phone or letters)
    - playing games ( i actually don't do that , but that can be interested of board games)
    - studying (instead of using laptop or book)
    - learning something new (by googling or watching on yt , instead of going outside or searching in old dictionary book)
    - reading cooking book online instead in a book
    - using camera on phone instead of classic camera which is also expensive
    - shopping online instead going outside
    - watching tv show on phone instead on tv
It's important to be avare that young people do the same thing as old but they just one device instead of 10 different ones .

Hello there, firt of all (if I may be so upfront) I do like that you didn't ditch that filming location all together after the mean comments of the other video - I thought it was quite a pretty spot for videos.
On the other end, I'd like to say that while I do have an addiction for social media, I fear that it's a bit more complicated with myself. For me CZcams is a form of escapism (similar to self harm or other addictions such as alcohol) and as I have made an attempt at limiting it, I found that I am unable to cope with life as it is at the moment.
Hopefully Therapy will teach me the required tools to have and maybe deal with / manage emotions.
Wish me luck and all that.
P.S. Does anyone know if brilliant does languages (as in human languages, not programming languages)?

I dont like the phones either. But there is nothing to do where I live. So I give in. Rather nothing I want to do where I live. People just work, drink, repeat. It's like a slow death trap. They closed the parks and stuff because of violence. Made it worse. Cameras everywhere. It's a real freedom choke place. Very depressing. No kids outside playing. Everyone locked into screens of some sort. The phone is my only company right now. I felt it getting worse over the years. I stopped wanting to go out. My adventures slowed down. Then I just fell all the way down. I hope something comes to destroy this technology. So maybe I can live better on back end of my life. We are energy. So if you concentrate all energy sources on a fixed point, you fall in with them. I'm out but it's a fight everyday. And the ones in are gone. It owns them now so they don't know to turn it off. It won't let them.
