"one cannot only insist on preserving tradition, there would not be progress if work was tied to tradition alone" damn i felt that
Perhaps T.S. Eliot might serve some inspiration for you, then ;)
Exactly the quote I wanted to put into the comment - you did so already. Fantastic wisdom in it. May more adopt it.
i was going to comment on those very same words too. it is an important reminder that in order for one "tradition" to have been born, the thing that preceded it had to be open to change.
Even classical music goes through evolution in history. Baroque, Classical, Romantic, etc
It was beautifully stated!!
My mom has a whole wardrobe made like this, it's a prized possession in our household. The artistry is amazing on it; I used to hide under a gap it had in the middle and stare at the beautiful images it had embedded into it. It illustrated the nature surrounding the Han River. Sadly, we don't have room for it in our new house, so it's sitting in our garage securely covered...
@@Azuremuse Exactly, make space for the closet so it can be part of your interior. Catching dust in the garage isn't doing it any favor.
Did it make way for IKEA furniture 😝
It's amazing how artistry, craftsmanship, and family tradition can really tie you to a piece. My grandmother had an old buffet made of hardwood (I think oak) carved and turned in an old European style. (I think she inherited it from her father.) I remember being just tall enough to get fruit out of the glass bowl she kept up there, and I remember the holiday decorations she would put on its small corner shelves. If I could get my hands on that thing, I know exactly where it would go. I hope you can find a way to include your mother's beautiful wardrobe in your home again.
mkptrsn unnecessary - pissed off because you don’t own it?
Have you thought of loaning to a museum so it can see the light day and for other people to enjoy your precious inheritance.
This man is literally a national treasure of his nation, and here he is talking to us about his art, WOW. I love living in the future!
Gorgeous workmanship from a master. I love that he talks about
encouraging his students to explore innovative new ways of expression,
working within the old craft of inlaid lacquer.
It is a very applaudable fact that korea has a system of intangible cultural assest because I think that helps in preservation of incredible traditional arts which are otherwise lost in phase of change and development
I fully agree. Fantastic idea I think we should emulate.
I remember when I studied abroad in Korea, I bought a small najeonchilgi piece in a museum as a gift for my parents. It had a design of two cranes on it, which fits us well because our last name is "Crane"!
I think it was one of the most expensive individual purchases I had made in my life at that point, but very worth it. Now it's safe in a wood cabinet with glass windows in it, where my parents keep all the really precious/beautiful things, so we know it's protected but we can still look at it :)
How long ago was that? How wonderful.
Wow, the final product is beautiful.
If anyone is interested in exceptional Korean craftsmanship more broadly; there is an excellent series of videos, 'Icheon Master Hand' on ceramics. Quality of work is once again outstanding.
Whoa thanks for the inside scoop
The finished box was gorgeous. Excellent video, thank you.
My wish is that this unique human being Lee Hyung-Man will have very many students to carry on this amazing technique. I think that the title he won is too little compared to his amazing contribution to art...
The title is the ultimate honour. There is nothing higher than that.
I admire how much pride he gets form his work. I envy him so much. I wish i had a sliver of the purpose he feels.
Peace and purpose is a great lifestyle: Peace with God, Ourselves and Others. And the Purpose that you were created for.
You created for a purpose, and can have the satisfaction that you fulfilled it.
Through Christ our imperfections,/bad karma/sins can be forgiven and we can live the life we were meant for.
Lol Keith, casually mention a couple deadly sins in your comment and you summon a religious nut. I lust for that power.
@@dmcgee3 Actually Feanor, Peace and Purpose is a very practical lifestyle. It simplifies life.
That really does seem like the key to everything

I just started to subscribe this channel, and I found this video, which makes me feel proud of our nation! I've never expected for this channel to introduce Korean art as this kind of art is not well known for foreigners. This channel is amazing. Thanks for showing others our tradition. Isn't it amazing? I'm so proud of our culture. It's called "나전칠기".
Truly amazing.
You are blessed.
Always adore these kind of heritages left for us. Those lacquers thingy will always amaze me whenever I visit baba nyonya museums here in Malaysia. About the claimant on which country has a better technique, I believe that we live just like in a neighbourhood and we share most of the things so, let just celebrate every uniqueness that everyone has. Peace yall ✋
Whoa! This is beautiful work. I love how the Master encourages progress - something that's not growing is dead - and he wants his students to have the skills to create these masterpieces but also allow the art to keep growing and living on.
I love watching these videos of artists at work. It's simultaneously daunting and inspiring.
This deserves more views. Gorgeous.
So grateful this was made and shared. Skills that require such dedication, focus and respect for the art are very admired by me, and I’m particularly fond of this traditional art.
"Aesthetic, Function and then Skill" i like that way of thinking
Exquisite workmanship...
I saw a huge wardrobe made this manner on a second hand sale place. It was gorgeous. Sadly I dont have enough money or space at my home. But cant stop thinking about it also. It must be a blessing to have a such artpiece at a home.
I have a much deeper appreciation for the work involved now. Awesome
I do admire this craftsmanship!
Creating a beautiful art like this is a blessing!
How beautiful! This art must be preserved indeed ❣
I had looked for a video like this a while back and was not able to find anything. Now, this video was presented and I have a better understanding of the procedures that the Masters go thru to make this beautiful artwork. My wife of 45 years is from Korea. We also have a a few wardrobes and smaller items with this inlay on it so I have appreciated this lacquer work for quite some time. The only downside of the work is the wood is generally very fragile. Kind of like anything made of Balsa Wood. Thank you Victoria and Albert Museum for posting!!
Simply fantastic! Thanks a lot for taping editing uploading and sharing.
Master has been taught well~ my condolences to lost of his Master also ~ beautiful work and a pleasure to see ~ truly honoured ~ Thank You 🙏🏿!!
Wow ... I'll never look at this type of decoration the same again 😯
I absolutely love when I see something, and the beauty strikes me so strongly, it moves me to tears. It's a rare a beautiful thing, and this achieved that. Wonderful and gorgeous work!
The beautiful tradition of artistic endeavours like lacquering is so important to preserve. If we lose the craftsmanship and skills required in this art, not to mention the talent, we will have lost something really valuable and beautiful. That is why It is so necessary that the skills and craftsmanship be taught to the next generation. When you think about a process that takes 45 steps, and hours and hours to achieve the final result, you can really appreciate the tedious skill and patience required to produce something of such beauty. When I look at old houses where so many beautiful features were achieved by remarkably talented and skilled craftsman who put in many hours of hard labor and tedious work, it makes the homes so much more special. And unfortunately there are very few craftsman with the skill, training, and talent, required to achieve such results today. The aesthetic of homes and architecture in America has suffered from the loss of skilled craftsman and artists.
Wow! Beautiful work and an amazing message.
Very fine work!! The mans commentary is total ASMR!!!
Wow. I have a greater appreciation for the pieces i have!! Lot of work! Thank you.
Good lord what a final piece that was. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💕
these three beautiful countries - china Korea and japan share so many common cultures and similarities in their ancient craftsmanship and arts, I have been to china and japan many times and looking forward to discover the traditions and ancient art of Korea.
Been to 3 country. Hope can travel again soon 😊
So beautiful it brought a tear to my eye oh how I hope that this craft never dies out it would be such a shame
Magnificent! I appreciate that he mentioned the year of his mother's transition in relation when he received his national honour/award. She was probably his greatest supporter in his chosen craft. Beautiful piece on beautiful pieces of art.
That is a stunning piece of work
This is such a beautiful art form, I love it💕
What a supurb video. Very informative and exquisite craftsmanship. A beautiful piece of work. Thank you.
One of my biggest fantasies is to be an apprentice for all my favorite CZcams creators. I love learning new things.
Exquisite work! Thank you very much for sharing this with us.
Makes me want to go buy myself one right now. They have these at thrift stores sometimes, but it's more like an antique/vintage thing, which is sad. Hopefully craftmanship like this will stay with us a little longer. Industrial revolution and machinery not only brings good change, but on the bad side it also caused many wonderful traditions done by hand to be replaced. Also modernization cause many beautiful things like this to get lost because it stops being 'trendy'. Let's just all appreciate traditional crafts whenever we can, because when we stop, they'll eventually cease to exist.
I remember going into antique stores filled with this lacquerware. They can be 100 and still have the look of something brand new
Tedious work.
Gorgeous.
Demasiado hermoso para dejar que se pierda , adoro los antiguos oficios
So. Much. Skill. Behind this art. Very much appreciated 🙏🏼 That one was beautiful 🌸🌸🌸

A TRUE WOWWWWW MOMENTTT.. THOSE HANDS MAKING THIS MASTERPIECES ARE GIFTS OF GOD
Very beautiful tradition , amazing colors , some times makes me think is our lacques in Pátzcuaro Michoacán México , also tradition also amazing tradition from our indigenous heritage , congratulations Nice
So beautiful!
Gorgeous work
I would love to understand the mindset and motivation of people who give videos like these a 'thumbs down'. Because no matter how interesting and impressive a video is, there are always those who apparently don't like it - although they almost never leave a comment saying WHY they don't like it. Presumably they get some kick out of it, but what that kick is is hard to identify.
O my!!!!! Truly bewtiful👏🏽
Thank you.
Beautiful work
Thank you I've always wondered how pearl inlay was made😊
ABSOLUTELY ASTOUNDING!!
Most exquisite art form. This video makes me happy and sad.
sooo pretty omg
So good!
I wish I could afford even a tiny box with this gorgeous decoration. But, 45 steps? It must be very expensive, so much painstaking work involved.
Stuff built proper, some people just don't appreciate talent, skill and patience 👍
Oh they do, but most don't want to pay for the time and effort when they can get something cheap, faster that looks "close enough" though will be lucky if it lasts a single generation.
My mother still has my great, great, great grandparents dinning table. Unfortunately the matching seats they made were ruined when we moved to a house that had central air conditioning and the wood dry rotted from all the moisture getting drawn out of the wood. (She had never had air conditioning before that so she didn't know to oil the wood to help preserve it until after they started cracking, breaking and then it was too late)
Precioso trabajo
so beautiful!
멋지고 자랑스럽다
Fascinating. Absolutely Beautiful Artist Craftsmanship. I have a Artist Korean made jewelry box in deep red lacquer & mother of Pearl birds and it is gorgeous.
amazing artwork
I did not know I was capable of such a high pitched sound until I saw the box lid at the end with the cherry blossoms (or are they plum?). I have never had such an intense urge to *want* something before... It's exquisite... and upon further research, dear god! Some of these items are so incredible that it's quite nearly incomprehensible!
It should be plum. Cherry blossoms are usually associated with Japanese traditional patterns.
yeah it’s apricot blossoms same as plum.
*apricot/plum blossoms* (Prunus mume)
cherry blossoms are usually associated with Japan, which isn't a good thing in Korea in general (during the Empire of Japan (prelude to World War II), the Japanese would plant cherry blossom trees on their colonies, and Korea was their first territory under the excuse of "annexation")
Stunning 💚
Loved it 💝
