- In this video I review the PRS SE Silver Sky Rosewood fingerboard guitar including several sound comparisons and observations about the examples I auditioned.
In my next video I will directly compare PRS SE Silver Sky Rosewood vs. Maple fingerboards versions to help you decide which is the best fit for you.
Happy to answer any questions in the comments!
Rock on,
Jonathan Z - Hudba
Your approach and delivery on all your video's are nothing less than stellar. Thank you
Thanks as always, Trevorr - much appreciated!
I love your content and style. Your reviews are certainly appreciated. Eagerly awaiting the record.
Thank you!
I have a US Silver Sky, but you make the SE sound amazing. I agree that the Silver Sky has the best sounding "Strat~ish" Single coil pickups out there. I leave my bridge tone halfway to keep it sounding thick and not too bright.
Thanks, Denny! I’d like to try the US version. Glad you’re using that bridge tone - it’s perfect for that!
Another wonderful video with awesome content 🎸🔥
Thanks for the kind words!
Always enjoy your posts! I really like the look of that piano black with the dark rosewood. I’m tempted to buy one.
Thank you, David! I’m enjoying it - it’s quite classy especially with dark board. They are worth checking out!
Amazingly played my dear friend!! Sounds really great!!
Love and respect Kyle!! 😊🥁🇵🇭
Thanks as always, Kyle! Much appreciated.
While I love your fancy reviews, I think these are becoming my favorites. Your playing and delivery are always spot on and well thought out. Would love to see your take on the SE DGT. I own a rosewood board SS SE and don’t feel I need anymore as it is so good. Great review.
Thanks and glad you like them! I'd love to review the DGT SE and it's on my list. Thanks for the suggestion!
Another excellent production…
Thanks brother!
Jonathan, you can make a frying pan sounds incredible. The tone is in your hands and it is so good. I could listen to you playing for days. Keep it up!
Thanks for the kind words as always! It’s been a labor of love developing my tone and playing over a lifetime. Will keep it up for sure!
i bought this for a friend (A PRS SS SE in Piano Black) . she is a very big Mayer fan and also a good guitar player .
That's awesome - I bet she loves it!
Wonderful demo and playing. I find modern-day PRS SEs are incredible value for money. I prefer the sound of my PRS SE DGT over my Core CE24. It has become one of my main gigging guitars. The basement demo is a great addition in my opinion. All the very best to you.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the basement demo. Agreed - SE's are a great value. I'd love to review the SE DGT at some point!
Excellent video, Jonathan! I actually have 3 Silver Sky guitars; one SE with a maple board, one SE with a rosewood board and then a core SS with a rosewood board. I think that I’ve shared with you previously that the core model is my “Bliss Machine”. Without leading the proverbial witness to much, you really, really, really need to try a core Silver Sky. While I certainly enjoy both of my SE’s a bunch, the core absolutely is “an entirely different creature”. I am quite looking forward to your next video on your SE’s. Good cliffhanger!
Thanks as always! I recall you saying that. You really got me thinking about it!
I played the American version of the silver sky, the feel and sound were really outstanding. Just solid quality in your hands , I haven’t ran up on one that impressed me so much for the price. I’ve played for over 50 yrs . Just thought I’d give a big yes and thumbs up to the core. I’m hoping to get a hold of one soon. Couldn’t afford it at the time.
Nice one I have the overland grey maple neck. And all I've done to it is float the tremolo and lower the action . Plays and sounds amazing and the neck and frets are spot on .
Thanks! Nice - killer guitars!
Killer playing on your vids. Been playing catch up since I found your channel❤
New sub. I appreciate the production quality of your videos and the consideration you give to a wealth of elements that may be of interest to players. Really thorough and well done. The ambience is really pleasing and lends itself to both your style of playing as well as a singular focus on the audio. I wouldn't bother with basement iphone examples personally, since the iphone audio quality is kind of a throw away when you have such a great setup upstairs. Maybe others find it useful? Great playing nonetheless.
When should we look for the comparison between maple and rosewood?
Thanks for the sub, feedback, and input - much appreciated! The maple vs rosewood will be up within the next 2 weeks.
@@RatherBeRiffing Great, looking forward to it!
Impressive, as always! You bring the best out of every guitar you play. I'm struck by your enthusiasm for the Silver Sky SE pickups as best strat single-coils. Maybe you might try a shootout of Silver Sky SE vs original Silver Sky? I'd watch!😄
Thank you! I love the suggestion. Will do when I can get my hands on one.
I almost got the piano black se, but I like your last video with the overland gray, mine should be here early next week
Can’t go wrong with that choice! Let me know what you think of it.
Ace stuff! My one came with bridge decked not floating (apparently how Mayer has them) may have to get mine floating like yours! Pow!
Thank you, Christian! My maple board version came decked also. I was pleasantly surprised this one came floating. Definitely worth trying out!
Love my Maple Prs Silver Sky SE, maybe I need a rosewood one too ;p
Do it! :-)
Great review & wonderful playing as always. Yep the basement tones are excellent 😎😎 Are you using plugins in your studio?
Thank you, James! I appreciate the feedback!
Great video! The separate amp only section is a nice feature and adds dimensions to the videos. I've been trying many Silver sky SEs, and noticed some neck shapes are slightly different. If one doesn't feel great, you never know, another may be just right. I also noticed some fret sprout on many at least at big box stores. Easily solved with humidification, some tech work, but still annoying.
Thank you! I've noticed fret sprout on some examples too. My maple board version developed sprout over time despite being in a humidified environment. However, I easily fixed it with 10 minutes of filing (a bit frustrating though as you mentioned).
@@RatherBeRiffing good to know it wasn't just me! Did you just do a side filing or did you dress the ends and corners too? It takes me about 30 min but if I go through each with a feet end dressing file and then some sand paper and micro mesh, it comes out really nice.
This sounds interesting, but it also makes me worry about getting one myself.. i would expect that the neck shapes are all the same on these models and i would feel ashamed getting into Thomann here in Germany and ask for a few ones to try out before I buy one... Now I'm not sure anymore about getting one or not man.
So Georgeus Guitar 🎸🔥
Thanks!
Sounds great, sweet playing as well. Do you notice a difference in neck thickness between the maple and the rosewood. Some say the maple seems thicker.
Thank you! Off the top of my head, they do feel a little different. I’ll inspect more closely and share my observations in my next video comparing the two guitars.
@@RatherBeRiffing
Thank you.
Like myself I'm sure many are looking forward to the next video. Personally I prefer the look of the dark fretboard over the maple but only when it's on a dark body otherwise maple is the way to go for me. I'm on the lookout for a mint used black fender strat with dark fretboard however the silver sky is in the running unfortunately haven't come across any locally to be able to compare the fender with the silver sky. I prefer try before you buy. Looking forward to the next comparison video!
I use ebony myself as it is very smooth feeling. Often w no face dots. Have u tried?
Glad to know! I prefer try before by but have had good luck buying online depending on what it is. What model Strat are you considering?
@RatherBeRiffing I doubt Il buy online, have to see it and feel it. It has to be black body with a dark fretboard, anything from a mim fender upward, Silver sky, or possibly a Ritchie Blackmore strat, there is one in like new condition at my local guitar shop, unfortunately it's not black.
There’s that sound again :) Fantastic. Hopefully this is one of your creations we’ll be able to buy?
Thank as always, Lorenzo! It’s not but you’ve got me thinking I should do a montage video of all my intros and ask people to vote their favorites. Then I’ll turn that into an album. What do you think?
@@RatherBeRiffing Excellent idea. Nowadays it’s so difficult to come up with an original sound that’s interesting and moving, which you’ve managed to do. So in a very real sense, it’s important you record that and make it available. There’s a kind of philosophy to your music that’s pretty rare so it’s important. In other words, yes please :)
@@lorenzo-agnesthank you, Lorenzo - that’s the best encouragement I could hope to receive.
could you please share your pickup heights on this guitar?
So the big Gilmour bends don’t require a quick tap of the Trem arm to put it back in tune?? I find this is common with most floating trems. Great demo btw! I have one coming in!
Thanks! No tap required for me. Enjoy it when it arrives!
Beautiful playing and one dapper looking mandolin - is it a Loar?
Thank you! Indeed it is a Loar.
That neck looks like ebony. Very beautiful. Your Eric Johnson guitar has the best tone imo. Are you familiar with Neal Schon’s solo work? Curious if he inspires your playing.
Indeed it looks like ebony. I’ve listened to his solo album from a few years ago and follow on IG. He’s amazing! I’ve never considered him a direct influence, but he is an inspirational player.
You are clever. Playing guitar through an amp an just record with the phone gives a hint of the real sound and feel when you play in the room. I have never been a fan of produced sound for guitar analysis. You shall incorporate this tests in new videos.
Thanks for the input!
What do you prefer? Rosewood or Maple for the silver sky?
Going to make a comparison video and decide then!
Looking forward to the next one impatiently
The bridge and middle pickup is position 2 not 4.
Doh! Thanks for clarifying that!
Hard to judge: you could play rubber bands on a frying pan... and it would still sound good ! 🙂
That would be fun to try! Maybe in the next video 😂. Thanks for the kind words as always and the good laugh!
Amazing instrument o.c. but for me design is awful. Even asian brands nowadays make good looking strat-type guitars.
