  • NOTICE: In July 2021 the channel name changed from HamCuredSmoke
    To Ham Radio A2Z. All of the earlier videos (like this one) are still available.
    In this video we start on the RTTY functions of the 7300. We'll look through the settings for the decode function and the log settings.
    A couple of the settings require a little background of the Baudot code. In the video there is a table showing the Baudot code. I got the table from the Crypto Museum. Their website also provides a good explanation of the background of the workings and history of Baudot code. You can check it out here:

    KA4FJV here. Thanks for all the video's. When ever I have a question about my rig, I always come here. I viewed the video series when I opened the box to get familar with the 7300. Obviously there is a lot out there. When I come up to a problem, I always go to you first. Got my 7300 in Sep 2020. Still viewing Thanks KA4FJV. Good on QRZ

    One tip I have is that if you're having trouble decoding is to change the mode from RTTY to RTTY-R. To do so just tap the RTTY box in the upper left hand corner of the screen, just below the Icom logo and when the mode menu pops up tap RTTY and it will switch to RTTY-R. To Switch back, reverse the procedure.

      Thanks Patrick. Good tip. So other people understand what this is doing-- It flips or Reverses the mark and space audio tones. One thing that could cause the problem is if the person transmitting is using digital mode software and they have their rig set to the wrong sideband. That would reverse the audio tones from their end.

    Thank you for these videos. Can you tell me how you set the scope so that after you press Decode, how do you have the waterfall and the "excel" looking grid together. I press M.Scope and I still don't get both the waterfall and the grid. How can I set them to show both. I'm sure it's in another of your videos. Thanks.

    Hi Tom, just came across this video, trying to test RTTY without USB as I am having an RFI problem. BTW I used to use the clanking monsters Model 15, 14, 14TD about 40 years ago, before I went to glass. Using Memory TX, I only see about 10W out on the SWR meter, with RF @ 100%. How do I get more?

    • @VK2AHB
      @VK2AHB Před 2 lety +1

      Scrub that request! I hadn't changed the calibration pot on the Oskerblock 200! Now getting full 100W without disruption - a bit of disturbance on the computer monitor. I've had the 7300 over a year now and still have a lot to learn, so I'll be signing up for the A-Z series.

      I have an MFJ-4230MVP switching supply and a Powerwerx SS-30DV switching supply. I have used both of them with the 7300 and they each work fine.

    Hi Tom,is it possible to change the RTTY -Shift for instance to 425 Hz to decode Weather-Reports?

    • @HamRadioA2Z
      @HamRadioA2Z  Před 3 lety

      Hello Klaus. You can change the RTTY transmit shift to 425Hz, but the internal decoder only works at 170 Hz shift. Seems like a strange limitation when they allow the other options for transmit.

  • @Ruben-8689
    @Ruben-8689 Před 4 lety

    Hello it is possible to connect a PC keyboard directly to the IC 7300 to transmit in RTTY ? Or What add gear I would need? Thank you.

    • @HamRadioA2Z
      @HamRadioA2Z  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Ruben. There is nothing documented about being able to connect a keyboard to the 7300. I have wondered the same thing myself. I've thought about trying to connect both the keyboard and the 7300 to a hub, but I'm pretty sure that won't work. I believe the 7300 appears as a device/component on USB. It would need to appear as a hub or controller to work with a keyboard. Maybe somebody reading the comments will have a suggestion.

      @Ruben-8689 Před 4 lety

      @@HamRadioA2Z Many thank for.your answer. In the instruction manual said that if you connect the USB to a PC, laptop then download the RTTY program you can transmit RTTY using the laptop keyboard but where is that program? because I can't found it. Perhaps there is on the CD control of ICOM? I hate spend 130 dollars on it for nothing. I don't control the rig from the distance. You know about it? 73.

    Thanks for another excellent video how difficult is it to send S>O>S in rtty to a location , I am just a layman and do not know the function or need of it in Amateur Radio how does one get that to a workable message to relay in an emergency to a workable language Thanks Mike, I am always keen to add 1 more Iota of brain cell to this 65 year ole brain

    • @HamRadioA2Z
      @HamRadioA2Z  Před 3 lety

      Hi Mike. Typically for RTTY (or any other digital mode) you will use a computer connected to the radio. On the computer you’ll be running digital mode software like FLDigi, WSJT-X, Ham Radio Deluxe or others. I go through some examples in videos 23, 24 & 25 in the IC-7300 series. You can check out the first one here: czcams.com/video/1cBbG62U_U0/video.html

    Seem like very little/no amateur RTTY, most hams seem to have switched over to various digital modes - so is it possible to set the 7300 to receive out-of-ham-bands commercial RTTY - if I understand correctly, perhaps need to change baud rate?

    • @HamRadioA2Z
      @HamRadioA2Z  Před 4 měsíci

      You can change the frequency shift and the baud rate in the settings. I don’t know if you can set the parameters to cover some of the commercial services though.

    • @HamRadioA2Z
      @HamRadioA2Z  Před 4 lety

      Hi Angel. Sorry, but no, it doesn't decode CW. You'll have to use an external computer and software for that. 73, Tom

    I can't get my 7300 to decode rtty. It never seemed to work and me being a new ham I assumed that I didn't understand. I would line up the signals peaks in the rtty window and see garbage. Now that my 7300 has the new firmware in it there is no way to line the signals up. They are much wider spread and can't both be placed under the alignment lines. Any ideas?

    • @HamRadioA2Z
      @HamRadioA2Z  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi. Sorry that you're having trouble. I have been able to decode okay with mine. It could be that you're listening to a RTTY signal with different parameters than the normal defaults. In the Set menu under Function there are settings to change the Mark Frequency, Shift Width (in Hz) and the keying polarity. You may need to change one or more of those settings depending on the signal you're trying to copy.
      Unfortunately, you either need to know the parameters for the signal you're trying to decode or you need keep trying different settings. There are also signals that sound a lot like RTTY, but that use different coding and the radio won't be able to decode those at all.

    • @HamRadioA2Z
      @HamRadioA2Z  Před 6 měsíci

      Hmm. In RTTY mode, I have had no trouble getting good decodes. You don't by any chance have the mode set to RTTY-R? the -R is Reverse. It switches sidebands and effectively swaps the mark and space tones. That would definitely decode jibersish.

      @HamRadioA2Z  Před rokem

      Hi Joel. I’m sorry you’re having trouble. It could be many things, including several where you aren’t doing anything wrong. Are you trying to decode RTTY in the amateur bands? Or are you trying to decode some of the commercial services on HF? A lot of the commercial services are at a different speed and/or use different tone spacing. You can change the settings on the 7300 to decode some of them, but it can’t decode all of them.
