You know what's the worst part of this for me? You can still hear Shinji scream through the wind raging and blowing
I think this is a good way to show no matter how much anger and rage one might have, the power and control of genuine fear and agony will always outweigh it in the end

whats excellent about this cliffhanger is that you assume the anime trope of shinji embracing his own anger and saving the day will proceed. little do you know that at this point shinji is essentially paralyzed and theres nothing he can do to stop what’s happening.

In most animes or movies, this would be the point where the protagonist gets filled with rage and that gives them the power to beat the bas guys.
In evangelion we got true fear from a depressed 14 year old.
I mean technically the wings were suppose to be a power up. But I think we need more scenes like this, not a simple power up after seeing a friend die. Pure terror, and sadness being brought out

I remember the first time I saw the almost-completed tree of life in the opening (A.K.A. the wings) and I just thought when it would be the moment that we would get to see that. I was kind of dissapointed, I mean, I know is suppoused to be the third impact and Shinji is suppoused to be completely terrified and feel horrible being now the only one left to """""save""""" at least the Earth, but damn, Anno could have gave us some Eva 01's godlike powers if the unit had entered in Berserk mode or something just for no more than 5 minutes, and then just start forming the tree of life...
A scream of absolute terror. Any semblance of sanity Shinji had left is completely drained in this moment, replaced with pure anguish. Truly bone-chilling stuff...

Better that 3I happened by someone or something else than by him. Because shinji caused the 3rd impact, The message (in my eyes at least) is basically "Be careful what you wish for ." Because Misato, Gendo, and everyone else relies on an already unstable kid to save humanity. They play the "He's a coward" card on shinji when he tries to run away(for good reasons) and he's berated and unappreciated when he does get the job done. I my opinion everyone on nerv got what they deserved in the end basically because of their "All take, No give" attitude towards shinji.

Shinji embodies exactly how I felt throughout the entire movie. Lost, upset, and wondering how things would turn out in the end, but then when it showed the fate of Unit 02 after Asuka's demise, I genuinely wanted to scream right alongside Shinji in that exact same way, because I had a genuine attachment to Asuka and her fate left me enraged. It's a testament to how good Evangelion is.
Yeah same for me dude, I was like wtf is happening during all the movie. Especially when the Eva series killed and started eating at asuka dude that was too much to take, it was like the movie was going on but I wasn't even processing what was happening on the screen. The shock and everything persisted for weeks lol

He's screaming not because of the blood and gore, but because he lost his final friend. That's the scream of utter despair.

Watching that moment just felt so impactful. If it were done any differently it wouldn't have worked but here, where he stops dead, all sounds cut out, his eyes widen, and he just lets out a bloodcurdling scream. That hit me like a train. It legitimatizes what the audience is feeling. Seeing her die hit like a truck but Shinji sounds exactly like what someone would in that scenario. Seeing how he failed her in almost every way he could have and then having to witness the aftermath. That's the kind of directing that sticks with you.

Can you even begin to imagine how terrified, depraved, sad, lonely, and mad at himself Shinji must be after this moment? I mean, literally up until this scene, Shinji was pretty much going through a mental breakdown, he was useless, selfish: he masturbated to Asuka's comatosed body due to desperation and desire, he watched Misato, his mother figure explode because he would not move, he rejected to at least try and get into unit 01 to save Asuka, who was pretty much dead already, his mother had to help him to react, and now, when he finally makes the decision to step into the battle, thinking that Asuka is in serious problems, thinking that he can fix his relationship with her, thinking that he can save her, thinking that he can at least be friends with her after this, thinking that he can do something about it, avoid her death, he looks at the sky searching out for her, calling out her name, and then, he sees her dead body, mutilated, the only chance he had, the only figure that was there to calm him, the only person that could make him happy, absolutely demolished, crushed, ripped apart, and dead, killed by the flying EVA's who are by the way above Shinji, like eagles preparing to eat a dead animal body, watching his "best friend" die is what made Shinji's mind break, he can't go back in time, he doesn't have any chance to recover the people he longed to be with, after seeing such a depraving and horrifying scene, all Shinji can do is scream, a bloodcurdling, horrified and desperate scream for help, which he will not get, since everyone is pretty much out of ideas on how to stop instrumentality, this isn't your convenient anime where the main character, after seeing one of the closest people he has been with die, get's an overpowered ability, this is the story about a depresses 14 year old trying to love, trying to make friends, trying...but not accomplishing anything up until the end, after the scream, the raging wind blows as if Shinji was the one making the sound, but sincerely, the most terrifying part about this scene is that if you listen closely, you can hear Shinji, still screaming in despair, even when the wind is blowing that hard, after that, there's a clean cut into a To Be Continued screen, and then the credits roll and I kid you not, I was petrified in my seat during the whole credit roll, thinking to myself, what the fuck is happening, how did it turn out this way? And that's exactly what Shinji is wondering right now.

Somehow I've never given this scene enough credit. Like its actually way more soul crushing than I remembered.
He's hardly gotten over the deaths of Kaoru, Rei, and now Misato. Asuka's basically all he's got left, and he's already fucked up that relationship probably. And now he's holding onto that last strand of hope he can unfuck this at least and... Well, he's far too late.
Add on that its just dead silent for a moment, and cutting to that... Gutteral scream, it just hits so hard.

When I saw clips of Shinji scream in different languages, I thought he was screaming because he was stuck somewhere for eternity.
This scene is so well directed.
The way Eva 01 rises from the destruction around it. Its almost limp body carried by glowing wings. The holes in its mask glowing with unknown, all powerful energy. Its emotionless facade, obstructed by its unhinged expression.
Then you see Shinji. In his face, you can see the burdens of loss and depression embedded in him. But he has a slight smirk. He doesn't know what awaits for him out there, but he knows that he can at least try to save Asuka. His determination fleeting, but present.
He peers upward. He sees the sight beheld to him. The one person he had left. The one person he could save. The only person who could have possibly cared for him in her own special way. Dead. Carried off by the angelic demons. Almost mockingly. Like holding a cat toy. So close, yet far out of reach.
He screams. Its all he can do. His scream echoing throughout the chamber of the entry plug. Unheard by anyone but himself.
The howling wind drowns him out. All while the last hope of humanity rises ever slowly. Its orange wings and eyes shining through the dust filled wasteland left in the wake of the battle before.
Slowly rising. Slowly destroying. Slowly ending.

I saw evangelion advertised as a comedy manga in one of the comics I was reading, needless to say I was shocked to find out what it actually was
I came into this series through the memes, through the Souja boy cranking.
I loved it at first, loved how wholesome it was at times
I left the series with several screams that leave me scarred for life.
You know it’s stuff like this that makes me feel like the Third Impact happening was kinda a good thing actually. Not because Instrumentality was a good thing, but because everyone including the dead people getting melted down into lcl and then Shinji making it so they could come back from that created the loophole that allowed Asuka to come back to life. If anything had happened differently, then what happened to her in Unit 02 would have actually been her last taste of life, and Unit 02’s body would be the last thing he’d have to remember her by, and as someone who relates way too much to both of them, that would be way too painful to accept. This is also part of why EoE’s ending is actually so hopeful in spite of everything. Asuka went through mental and emotional hell in the last few episodes culminating in a final moment of pure elation as she fought the MPE’s that might’ve been the happiest she ever was since her mom’s death, only to get that joy ripped away in the most brutal and painful way imaginable. I think if she chose not to come back, she would’ve been the most justified out of anyone in that decision, and yet she still does. And yeah all this convenient stuff happened that allowed her the option of coming back to life, but the REAL reason her brutal death here wasn’t the end for her is because she didn’t let it be. She chose life, even after it inflicted THIS upon her, and because she was strong enough to make that choice, she actually has a shot of finding that type of true happiness again.

This is a good one, but to me the real screaming is when the Giant Rei appears and he is just constantly screaming while yanking on the controls trying to do ANYTHING, it's such raw panic and fear in his voice that it sends chills down my spine

I was just about ready to give in to my nausea by this point in the film. I still get a stomach complaint every time I encounter anything from it (especially anything to do with Unit-02 and its pilot), having mentally blocked out most of what I witnessed after watching it.
