I haven't ridden for 35 years, my last bike was a Yamaha rd400 and I cannot believe how much bigger bikes are these days. Got the itch in 21 and had decided (after reading many reviews) on an xsr700. Having viewed a second hand bike I decided against it as it just looked messy to me with a mis match of bits and pieces and various shapes which did not flow stuck into a frame. After considering many other bikes I drew a blank. A week ago, I was walking past my local motorrad dealer and amongst the second hand bike line up there it was, my lightbulb moment......a KTM 690 Duke. 2017 5k on the clock and near immaculate for £3990. After a good read of the reviews and prices I was sold on it, good looking, sounds fabulous and apparently a dream to ride. With no hesitation and no test ride that bike is now sat in my garage!. Unfortunately its hoofing it down with rain and will be for days to come so a ride (somewhat apprehensive about that) will have to wait. Funny thing is that a KTM was probably the last bike on my wish list but here we are. I call it my big orange life re-set button!

Freddie! The Sportster advice was spot on! The Classic 350 owner needs to find a friend who enjoys a slow ride. I wish I knew what part of the Eastern US they live in. I live in the best area to ride in the entire country. Western North Carolina. The Blue Ridge Parkway is amazing with a maximum speed limit of 45 mph.

Yes, they should go riding with a friend. But also, have they done a training course? If they're not confident to ride more than 10 miles, how did they get a licence?

My second bike was a Kawasaki Vulcan (VN900) Classic and it should have been my first. The weight low down, fueling spot on and so easy to ride. I may end up buying another…or the RE Super Meteor 650! After moving on to larger cruisers, I’m seriously considering a downsize. Hope you get over the bug, Freddie!

If someone has so much fear or anxiety about riding and looking for any excuse not to ride I think it would be a good idea to think long and hard on whether this is a hobby for you. A heathy amount of fear of riding is not a bad thing since it keeps your awareness high and risk taking under control however there comes a point when fear can put you in danger if it is all consuming. Is it possible you like the idea of being a biker but when it comes down to it you don’t like actually riding. I hope the listener is able to deal with the fear and learns to enjoy the riding but if not then he makes the right decision and stays safe.

    • @borderlands6606
      @borderlands6606 Před 2 měsíci +2

It sounds like the owner could use a confidence building training course, with experienced riders suggesting what they are doing incorrectly. Or just find a quiet back road and practice at sub-30mph speeds. Play and have fun with the bikes, and not see the ride as wild animal waiting to bite back.

    • @stewartnorton6386

@@borderlands6606 I did this when I passed my full test in UK. My confidence was still not great so I'd go out early Sunday morning ( 7am) to a empty sport centre carpark and ride around then go out for a little ride as roads totally empty, then as my confidence grew go out later when it was busier until I got to a point where I was happy no matter how busy the road.

Some good advice on getting a Harley Freddie. Those other bikes will only loose value. A Harley is worth good money forever. I got to tell ya. That new Norton is really cool! You need to do a review on it. I rode a friends old Norton fastback many years ago. Crazy thing shifted on the wrong side and upside down. But after I figured it out, it sure was fast!

  • @gzk6nk

Lots of excellent advice there Freddie.
Buy the bike of your dreams, not the bike 'nearly' of your dreams, because the 'nearly' bike will never cut it and you WILL end up buying the bike of your dreams having wasted money and time on the 'nearly' bike'.
And - fear - JUST DO IT! Most of the best experiences of my life have been contemplated with an element of fear. I used to fly aerobatics in small aeroplanes and by crikey if you don't feel fear before you do that you didn't ought to be doing it.
On the bike, I'm all too aware of how vulnerable I am to numpty car drivers, but by crikey I am not going to let them deprive me of the pleasure of biking.
Life is for living. I'm 74 now and looking back it's the stuff I did that was 'fearful' that is the stuff I'm so glad I did. In flying, in biking, and even in making career decisions.
Fortune favours the brave, they say. I'd re-word that to 'fortune favours those who overcome natural and understandable fear'.

My advice for anyone wanting a bike is go for it, enjoy it, look after it but expect to lose money when you sell it and be thankful if you don't and remember the more you make it your own the more you'll lose on it, the more you do the needed upgrades, the more saleable it will be but not more valuable. Another interesting chat. For the viewer who had confidence problems, I think taking some instruction for how to deal with and identify risks to make riding safer may help, not doing any riding won't help, them at the end of the day if still anxious then riding is not for them. For the RE 120 editions, I have the continental GT and bought it to ride and not to cosset away, I think those UK asking prices are unrealistic and they don't actually sell for that anyway. Enjoying your Goa videos, you and Monica do these travel videos very well.

To the mc rider from NE US…. Hang in there!
I get it!….. especially living in the north east of the US.
Keep at it!… Go to school parking lots on Sundays and gain your confidence.!
Keep practicing, you will eventually turn the corner, so to speak.
You will get there… You need to familiarize yourself with your bike and enjoy it… You will become addicted like the rest of us… Once you gain your confidence… And feel more comfortable… Things will come naturally. You know the rule of thumb… Always ride as if you are invisible especially in the area where you live. Good luck to you… You can do it.

People simply learn at their own pace and not everyone can get the hang of something new or get over fear quickly.

It should have been explained at the beginning of your CBT that it isn’t a test but an assessment which takes as long as it takes for you to complete! It would be a very unreasonable thing to expect someone with very little or no experience to pass a motorcycle test! I was full time Motorcycle instructor for 15 years and always made sure my Students were aware of this, it massively helps taking the pressure off! Imagine thinking you were doing a test when you’ve never even ridden before!
Well done for persevering with it, ride safe and enjoy yourself!
So remember folks you can’t fail a CBT it’s not a test and it takes as long as it takes.

I respectfully disagree about Norton. I think theyll likely fail or shutter yet again in about 3 years unless they get their bikes at 15k. The only thing they have going for them is that the thruxton is going out of production, theyre built in the uk and they have what most reviews are saying is 'character'. That said, with their 17k plus price tag their customers are either retirees or trust fund babies in the uk only.

I agree. Selling bikes that average riders can't afford is not a recipe for success. Hinckley Triumph is the perfect example of a marque resurrection, by producing bikes we not only wanted, but could afford. I really liked the Atlas Nomad and Ranger that was debuted just before Gardiner went bust. And that's liking as a bike, not just as a Norton (I ride an original Norton)

Fear? Get on the bike, an ride around the block. The next day, do the same thing the other direction. Repeat. If thats all you do all year, fine. But one day you will come to the stop sign half way around the block, an turn the other way. An you will be gone for an hour. That ride may be your new daily ride. But it will eventually get board of that an ride somewhere else. Fear is about the unknown. Take it in steps an the fear will go away as the unknown becomes the known and routine.

As for the last segment on the Norton, i don't believe they are available here in America, I am guessing it would need to be imported and then supply chain issues for parts here. Same with BSA. Heck, Royal Enfield just got less then 300 miles away just last year. I am guessing, America is not the main market for these types of bikes at this time. Just wait!

It's beautiful, but Norton still want way too much coin for a bike with an agricultural 5 speed box, and a pathetic 76 hp. It's also hard to see the point in fitting top shelf suspension and brakes to such a pedestrian machine.

It may seem harsh, but I can't sympathise with anyone who buys a 'special edition' as an investment and expects it to retain its original price. SE is usually nothing more than some cosmetic changes and maybe a numbered badge. Add to that a Royal Enfield isn't a luxury brand to begin with, I wonder if that person knows much about bikes at all. I feel bad for them to a degree, but a fool and their money...

I wouldn't get too excited about the Norton you will be testing. For all the hullabaloo regarding quality control, their bikes are a huge disappointment when it comes to the level of finish. One CZcamsr had one for a period and he couldn't believe the number of faults it had when he picked it up from the dealer, who admitted it was the only example they had at the time that actually worked. He didn't find the ride engaging, it wasn't worth the money, and every review I've read has said much the same.
I'd be delighted if Norton were a success, and hopefully you have a better experience, but it seems they have a way to go with the Commando.

Dear Dr Dobbs, I've heard a lot recently about First World problems, compared to real ones, the chap(ess?) with the unridden 2 bikes is the first human example I've come across. Please admit him/her into your world renowned recovery program #Broadmoor_innit!!?! with immediate effect.
