  • If your vehicle's hatch is heavy, sagging, or wont stay up, it may be failing lift gate struts. In this video we are dropping the headliner and replacing the hatch struts on a 2006 VW Touareg I just picked up. This repair likely applies to other VAG SUVs Porsche Cayenne #diy #humblemechanic #youtube

I recently got a 7P Touareg and your videos have been so helpful. There are so many little things that seem fairly common that I still need to figure out though including: parking brake motor replacement (and adjustment), steering wheel lock, DPF replacement, oil filter housing and front timing cover on the TDI engine, and electrical repairs.
I have a cylinder 2 pressure sensor problem and I don’t know where to start with that one. Wiring harness? ECU?

Hey man! Very helpful video. I will add this on my list of to do things :D. I have an issue with my 08 touareg. It's regarding the rear right door which is not opening anymore. I replaced the wire mechanism of the window as it was not going all the way up and after I put everything together, the door would not open anymore. It's not working from either way, inside, outside. The exterior handle seems a bit loose than the others so most likely I did not install corret the handle. Was wondering if you encountered this issue with any of the touaregs you serviced. Is there any way of opening the door without braking the trim ?
Oh, and the parkings sensors are not working at all when it's raining also. If it's sunny and dry, all good. As soon as it gets cold/wet outside, they stop working and show the red lights at the parking sensor indicator.
Keep up the good work! 👌👌👌👌

I absolutely love your channel and i have been a fan for the better part of five years and i absolutely love your channel and all the content you post. Could we expect more content on this vehicle and how to fix it? Would love to see more about the air suspension cars and electronic issues. I was thinking exactly the same thing! I saw the video, then saw how long it was and thought something was seriously wrong. This really does suck though - when a job that should be simple is made into something so complex, it says a lot about repairability and the manufacturer's attitude towards it. Thanks Charles for making it so clear and (relatively) straightforward.

Awesome video, thanks! Just picked up a 2005 V8 Touareg with air suspension for the same price, turning it into my off-road ranch cruiser.
As the first thing I did was add a stock trailer hitch and wiring, all picked up used on Ebay, I can tell you the "wiring mess" on the right side is the 2 connectors that plug into the wiring/trailer brake module, which lives in a slot on top of the right side wheel well. Once this was installed and wired the 7 pin trailer connector came to life.
The brake controller I purchased from etrailer had an option for a wiring harness that plugged into the stock VW underdash connector. This was far simpler and less expensive than buying the wiring harness and connector from VW.
I appreciate you taking the time to make these videos and hope to see you out on the trails someday!

I just did this repair to my 2005 Cayenne and the only difference is the access to the lift struts is they use a foam block with sealant to glue it into place. Trim panels are identical at the C-pillar but the D-pillar is a bit more involved with rear Bose speaker mounting. Also the upper panel to the headliner is same width but twice as deep. PITA merely for all the interior body work that has to be addressed. The actual parts removal and install is less than 10 minutes. I did all 4 since they were toast. I saved a LOT of money not having a shop (private or dealer) do the work!!

As someone who is very interested in replacing my Jeep Grand Cherokee with a Touareg at some point, I'd love to see some general maintenance videos. Those videos probably already exist from other people, but I always look for your videos to get the "oh hey, here's a neat trick" bits and the superior camera angles/production quality.
A headliner video would also be nice. I recently re-did the headliner on my Mk6 Golf TDI, and part of me wishes I could have gotten the "Charles' secret sauce" information. What spray works best, little tips for adhesion, etc.
    Some Touareg specifics -
    Porsche brake upgrade kit
Radio upgrade (something similar to the RCD330 for Mk5/6 cars)
Sunroof drains (two birds one stone with headliner vid?)
Clear and concise video on how to jump the battery from the engine bay

Annoyingly the other 2 were plastic rivets which were a massive pain to pop out as they were towards the front. Like we know the main reason to have power gate option is for not using any hand or external force, especially when your hands are busy. Please let me know if I should replace only the passenger shock, or should buy a new (extremely expensive) motor? Thank you in advance.

I got a question (I don't mean to hijack the video ofc).. but I've got a 2011 scirocco caxa, which i've recently lowered, ever since then the headlights are pointing straight down, I've read that this happens because the auto leveling sensor thinks there is a heavy load in the back, and that I have to reset it via VCDS.
But for the life of me I cannot find that setting anywhere, it's supposed to be "Headlight Aim Adjustment under basic settings " under "55 Xenon Range" or something? I think? But that option doesn't exist, and under centr elect 09, basic settings is grayed out..

@@davidandrew7314 that doesn't require the main hatch's part of it to be hidden in the roof though...
(i initially thought it might have something to do with automating it, but the automated one actually seems closer to the classic setup)

@@GertvandenBerg It does. It's because the glass lifts up independently, causing the struts to not be able to be positioned in the usual place (outside the seal, concealed by the boot lid).

I hate everything about these. My mounting point on one of mine for the main door bent. And the strut popped off. Now my door only opens enough I constantly run into it with my head.

Why do designers/engineers have to replace a simple design, such an exposed struts? Understand that the hidden struts may be aesthetically superior, but it makes no sense to have them be so complex to repair just for the visual treat.

    • @tomkato6400
      @tomkato6400 Před rokem +1

My thoughts exactly. I replaced these on various cars (all exposed) and were quick inexpensive jobs. Don’t want to spend a lot of money on an older car that has significantly depreciated in value.

That is the same ridiculous design that BMW used on the E34 and E39 wagons. What were they smoking?
Edit: BMW is much worse. Imagin the same job but without the neat little access panel. All work has to happen thru the hole the hinge arm goes thru.
