  • Olympiacos Piraeus advanced to their 2nd Final Four in a row after beating Fenerbahce Istanbul in the five-game series. In this video, BasketNews’ Augustas Suliauskas analyzes how the strategy of Dimitrios Itoudis made the Greeks & Georgios Bartzokas uncomfortable, how Kostas Sloukas was able to dominate & the Olympiacos’ set play that Fenerbahce was unable to stop.

@@petedo6532 Olympiacos in 2011-12 did not dominate at all, but won the title surprisingly. Efes been at the very top for four seasons straight. Regular season championship with 24-4, and had aleady played and won all difficult road games. Three straight championships after a final in my book. No team comes close.
You also have Fener with 5 F4's and 3 finals in a row. Stolen championship against CSKA. Bad refereeing also in the Real final. Won the regular season with a 25-5 record, 15-0 at home. Won the playoffs 3-0 (against the previous champion), 3-0 (against the previous champion), 0-3, 3-1 and 3-1. So a playoff record of 15-2.
      Both competed against Russian teams.
Olympiacos in the last two seasons goes 24-10 (not even remotely close to 25-5 and 24-4), has a 6-4 record in the playoffs, became 4th last season, and is now in the playoffs again. Did not compete against Russians.
If you still think this Olympiacos comes close to them, then that's very cute. 😊

Yes, Bartzokas barely adjusted but to his credit, staying with his plan worked in the end. What's even more impressive is that while Fener made around 20 different adjustments all against any possible weakness of Olympiacos, they never got away in any game and struggled to even lead, except maybe in game 3 - still with small differences. For me that says a lot for Olympiakos' game. Not to mention that Olympiacos shot very bad the whole series and 3ps are a main part of the playstyle. Players like Papanikolaou, Peters, Larentzakis who all had great percentages all season, barely made any.
I'm not taking anything away from Fener's effort, they literally tried everything they could, but that gives even more credit to Olympiacos and the Bartzokas playbook imo
Also adding to the discussion about Sloukas' great buzzer beater: Of course it was amazing and crucial but let's not forget that Olympiacos almost gifted the game away 20 seconds before that.
And simultaneously Olympiacos DID gift Game 2, with 2 missed FTs and a lost rebound after a bad Fener offence and a missed three pointer from.. Motley! Personally I believe that if Olympiacos had won game 2, the series could have even ended 3-0. But..."what ifs" should not be part of bball discussions :)

Im an Oly fan but what everyone does not really understand is that Fener has a 3xbudget from Oly even though some basic players like Wilbekin were out, it was unfortunate that they came 8th because they were one of the favs to win the trophy this year, with many great players so it was the worst draw that could come as 8th position team.
From the other hand I have to admit that Oly used to play much better on earlier stages but hopefully F4 will be different games. I know that budget do not play basketball for there is a reason that player like Mirotic is worth 5M, almost half of Olympiakos budget. Dorsey joined the team only 2 months ago as well. So no, Fenerbahçe wasn't some secret favorite to win the tournament. Olympiacos had very passive coaching during the matches and it almost cost them the series. Without Sloukas' miraculous buzzer beater, Fener would have won the series and it would have been one of the biggest upsets in the recent history of Euroleague. Olympiacos were the heavy favorites. Itoudis plan was to bring the better team down to his team level, making every game a hard dogfight. Partizan, Macabbi and zalgiris, they all tried to raise their game to match their opponents. I can not praise Itoudis for finishing 8th in the regular season, for sure and IMO doesnt deserve any special praise for losing the 5th game so easily.
Talking about exploiting weaknesses, i would like to ask what happened in game 5? Even if Fener was lucky enough to have one player in a career high perfomance, the game wasnt even close. I mean, OLY had the whole team tarketing Dorsey for example and most of the players scoring against him again and again and again, all night long..
    * some of the preseason predictions had Fener as a favourite fo the title, i guess because of the high badget, while OLY was questionable even for the playoff qualification or predicted to be placed about the 6th spot. Monaco, Barca And Real, they all have twice or three times higher badget. Hearing you considering OLY as the F4 favourite, i can only make one conclusion: Good job OLY, Well done!!

What makes European basketball so great is that every cm of the court is meticulously fought over. Very complex tactics are created to take advantage of every potential advantage. And that's what Itoudis did. He created a plan to limit Olympiacos' offense. And it worked great. Without Sloukas' miraculous buzzer beater, Fener would have won the series. That's what a coach does, create the best chance of winning for his team.
The insane victim complex of the Olympiacos fans are hilarious. You all want so badly to be the underdogs after dominating the whole season. Different countries have different budgets. E.g a Spanish club will earn more from the tickets and for sure the will not have to pay fines for putting on flairs in closed stadiums. These action may cost the value of a good player to a club. Sure Olympiacos is doing a great job for their budget, but they have to make sure they don't loose some core players. That has happened in the past and they didn't manage to stay on the top like e.g. Real Madrid does all these years. The Euroleague needs more exposure, better deals with TV channels, better stadiums and better overall product. That will attract higher value players. It's a pitty beacause the basketball level in Europe is pretty high and the style is much more interesting than the NBA. We could use their example on how they have made their league a global sensation. Also national leagues should support even more the promotion of basketball 🏀 at schools so that we produce even more great players from Europe. What I want to say in the end is that it wouldn't harm to have a bigger budget!

It's what many people say, but I think it's a totally wrong point of view. They say without Sloukas' buzzer b. Fener would be in f4, judging from the outcome of 4th game after oly won the 3rd with sloukas' shot. So to explain: supposedly sloukas didn't score the buzzer and oly lost the game. Then game 4 WOULD BE ANOTHER STORY. Nobody can be sure fener would win game 4. Oly could have won game 4, they've done it in the past with Efes.
So to sum up. Oly qualified playing mediocre matches in these series, when fener gave all they got, and still striving to win 2 matches. Oly was clearly a far better team, didn't catch their standards, didn't shoot well but still got what they wanted.

For me Itoudis was lucky because for some strange reason walcup and maquisik were hesitate a lot from the 3point. In regular season they shoot 38% and 50% each....If olympiakos was slightly more efficient at shooting it was going to be way more easy...

  • @KyriZee
    @KyriZee Před rokem

Are they favourites to win it all...
They have been the best team of the Regular season and have been awesome in two out of the five Play-Off games. In the other three Fener did their best to stop them and succeeded. But Sloukas scored that impossible buzzer-beater.
Fener (Itoudis) have probably shown the other three F4 teams how to stop Olympiakos (not how to beat though). Olympiakos managed to overcome these tactics VS Fener barely, but will they succeed to repeat this again? Will Monaco, Barcelona, Real Madrid be able to do what Fener did? Who knows??
Another strong point to consider: Monaco gave a hard time to Olympiakos in last season's Play-Offs; harder time than Fener did this season. This season, they are the only team that beat Olympiakos twice!!
So, Olympiakos are the best overall team in the F4. They have proven that on their good day they cannot be defeated by anyone in the Euroleague. But Monaco has managed to best them and knows how to beat them. So, the hard game for Oly is the semi-Final. If they go through, I think that they will beat any of the Spaniards that will find themselves in their way... To close a Season that begun with them defeating 3/3 games in Spain. Beaten Barcelona on Week 1 in Spain and Real Madrid on Week 3 in Spain.

nah, we are not the favorites in my opinion. The 2012 Final Four is the total prove that each team has 25% chances. A team can be the favorite, when the Final Four is being held in its own stadium and has massive support, the players know the best way the baskets etc, for example panathinaikos on 2007, Fenerbahce on 2017, Real Madrid on 2015.
