As a geriatric nurse in Germany, I can tell you it works. However, one point in this video is completely wrong: It is forbidden by law to lock up people even if they have dementia!

I cared for my mother for a long time and I know the symptom. It wasn't a problem for her in a side street with very little traffic and lots of neighbors she knew from before. They just called when the coffee party was over and we went to get her.
For a nursing home with limited time per patient and unfamiliar surroundings, I think that's very practicable. It gives the patient some freedom and the carers some time to catch them again. Whether this is a little frustrating for the patient is actually less relevant, as they usually forget new experiences quickly.

My grandma ran away several times a day. She always wanted to go to Grandpa's cemetery.😢

In understand both sides. When I saw a stop like that for the first time, I got confused as well because the bus stop was in a small driveway a bus could never stop. Then I learned the reason. That was the very first place that erected a fake bus stop. As relative of a person suffering from dementia and care-giver I like that idea but it has its flaws as well. It is cynical but pragmatic and smart. It helps the staff to find their patients. Imagine you have to search for a person every once or twice a month outside, informing the police for help. An absolutely desaster. A few years ago I saw a man getting in the real bus only wearing a hospital gown. Other passengers took action before I realised the situation and the bus river radioed the control center.

My Grandpa had a severe case of dementia for several years before he died, and my father kept him at home and cared for him. But once or twice, Grandpa went out only in his pyjamas, or even worse, incontinence material. FORTUNATELY, there is a bus stop just in front of our house, and he was dutifully standing there waiting for the bus. The neighbours usually saw him and called my Dad. After a few times, Dad just locked up the house, because there was no other way of stopping Grandpa if Dad was at work, or grocery shopping. I like these bus stops. It helps the nurses, it keeps the patients safe, and heck - it's much better for their self-esteem and sense of personality to have SOME freedom than to be commanded around like children just to keep them from going out. Plus, a lot of them might harm themselves, the nurses or other patients if the fall into a raging fit because they want to go out. They are often living in delusions. There is no way of "reinforcing" that, there are only ways to cope with it. This is in my eyes a rather respectful, calm and safe way. And for the patients that become agitated when no bus arrives - the nurses will know about that soon and try other ways of reassuring the patient.

Good Idea for everybodys safety. We don't have that in Austria..maybe because of other Securities. Don't know. Never saw such an Incedent with these kind of Patients. I guess it's good...specially in bigger Cities.

never ever heard of fake bus stops before. If these are really existing, it's kinda "Volksverarschung" (telling all the others "you idiots are so easily to fool"). But these signs look damn original with their color and size and all that. And 4 sure there's a copyright pending ! So who the f*** is responsible for ?
But: if these ever should have existed here in Germany in the past when elder ones were still young they should know that missing tags and so called graffitis are a sign for something strange is goin on !
this is the first time in a long period I feel ashamed of being native and still resident German, coz THIS is not ok !

In our small town we have been missing an old man since last summer. He had dementia, he probably wanted to go to his brother who lived in the neighboring town, but his twin brother has been dead for 9 years... it's sad, he's probably dead now too and we haven't found his body yet. His relatives lived between fear and hope... and now they can't even really mourn because they have nothing to bury.
My grandmother also always ran away, luckily we knew where to look....she always wanted to go to the coffee and cake meeting where she met with her friends when they were still alive.
If these fake bus stops prevent even a single elderly person with dementia from getting lost, then I don't give a f*** about copyright of street signs or someone sitting there and waiting in vain for the bus. .
Human lives are more important than anyone feeling like an idiot!

It helps to watch the clip before writing such nonsense.
