  • Queen conch, Aliger gigas, is a large marine gastropod found in Florida, The Bahamas, and throughout the Caribbean region. It is an important fishery species and grazer in the seagrass beds. At the Naguabo Queen Conch Hatchery in Puerto Rico, queen conch are being raised using aquaculture techniques for restoration and sustainable seafood. This video tells about the early life stages of the queen conch through magnified clips and images of the egg mass, veligers (larvae), and newly metamorphosed conch.
The Naguabo Queen Conch Hatchery is a partnership between the Queen Conch Lab, Florida Atlantic University Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute; Conservación ConCiencia; and the Naguabo Fishing Association. It is supported with a Saltonstall-Kennedy NOAA Fisheries Grant (Award NA19NMF4270029).
