I've thought about making one as well! Honestly, I love when people share things as a "I'm trying this new thing out" instead of this weird pressure that many content creators have to post something in order to educate or be an expert. We need to see people trying things and doing new things and being beginners! Thank you so much for sharing how it's going for you.
It seems to be a similar concept to "second brain," which is digital-focused. It's like scrapbooking, memory keeping, journalling... I'm really interested in starting one! The flexibility sounds really nice too. It's basically things you want to remember and things that influence you, and I really like that.

I just started a commonplace book last week too! So far I just have notes from a book I read and some information that will be useful in the future

I love my common place book ..
I've done my research on this ...
some of my findings are :
The word means "a heap of things" or "miscellany" in Italian. The earliest such books were kept by Venetian merchants in the fourteenth century. Influence of Humanism: The humanist movement in the 14th to 16th centuries greatly influenced the popularity and development of commonplace books.
    Commonplace books are hardly new.
In the Renaissance, readers started transcribing classical fragments in notebooks, bringing ancient writings into conversation with their own lives.
After his wife left him in 1642, John Milton processed it in his commonplace book, chronicling a reading binge about bad marriages. LOL
    ********************************************************
The Front pages of my Commonplace book are for the *TABLE OF CONTENTS* with page # and date of entry.
I always leave a margin on the outside of the page, where I can scribe my own personal notes, thoughts , page numbers directing me to the back pages, where the DIY Dictionary is.
The Back dictionary is important to my personal growth in language usage and greater understanding. Any word that is "new" to me , I will put an '*' behind the word ...and in the margin I will put the '*' and the dictionary page in the back , to look at and remind me of what it means.
My commonplace books is a mixture of many subjects of interest. It is generally a private collection of information, facts and thoughts. It is a notebook or journal where one gathers and organizes information from various sources for future reference and reflection. They are more like a database than a diary. I like to call it my " *Historic Cache of knowledge* Novel.
    1) Interesting and important historical events
like : When was this invented ? What is this made of ? Where was this event happening ? etc etc.
    2) Survival & Bushcrafting tips and tricks is filled with techniques and diagrams / sketches of various survival ways of the past and present...
example : How the early pioneers/colonists/ immigrants, travelled across the land and stored food ? What were the most common meals eaten from 1500's -1800's
    4) Field notes , nature journaling and various diary entries of places travelled , from 18century Mountain men journals, early explorers of the 15 -1800's, Traders & Voyaguers of the 16-1800's, Artisans of the middle ages and before, Ancient homesteading techniques to present homesteading..
    5) Quotes and inspirational phrases/ philosophy Sayings from Writers of the past to the Actors and leadership of today
    6) Passages from novels, Sayings from Movies and tv shows, etc
    7) Pieces of conversations i've had in the day or past.
    8) A letter to my future self, collection of small wallet sized photos of my life, collection of my achievements and certificates
    ************************************************
From The roman Emperor of 180AD, Marcus Aurelius to ..
the American Writer of early 1900's to the modern Mark Twain , to...
The 15-1600's Francis Bacon, who is still widely regarded as a major figure in scientific methodology and natural philosophy during the English Renaissance. Having advocated an organized system of obtaining knowledge with a humanitarian goal in mind, he is largely credited with ushering in the new early modern era of human understanding.
to the Modern entrepreneurs, motivational speakers of 2024....they all used a commonplace book to gather notes.

I recently learned about commonplace books in a class about Shakespeare and early modern theory of mind, and immediately thought it sounded like a great way to collect random thoughts. Love seeing how you're using yours, I think I might start one too!

I have been thinking about commonplace books too! Please keep sharing how you use yours. I am going to start mine as well but I have no idea how to do the index/contents. I will be looking forward to how you create that.

I’ve been binging commonplace and this video resonates with me the most. I like that you decorate a bit. I like the idea of color coding by topic. I am not going to be able to track it all by pg number…I’ve seen that done in some videos. That’s too much. I’m not even sure I’ll ever go back to look at what I put into it. So mine won’t exactly be for reference. So maybe mine will be more of a catch all, in a commonplace theme. I really just have too many blank notebooks and I like to write. But I don’t have enough to journal about. Lol. Great video!

Your comment about maybe you should have done some research first but just kind of jumped in---I wish that's what I do. LOL I'm that girl who researches the life out of something because I think I have to have it all figured out before I start. You've inspired me to just do it. It's a learning process so I'm sure I'll adjust as I go.

Timely video for me, just re-starting another one myself! Quick question, how do you glue your paper notes into the journal so nicely? Mine never lay so flat . . .

I use sticker paper when I print everything out so maybe that's it? Or adhesive tape
