    A lot of comments regarding the set, here's what I know: most of the scenes in the pilot were shot inside Filoli except for the scene between Blake and Steven in the library - that was filmed on a set. The dining room, study (used as a music room), ballroom and second floor sitting room (where Krystle signs her pre-nup) were never re-created as sets and were never seen again.
    Seasons one and two: the reception room (seen here) is similar to the one in Filoli but smaller (there are two sets of french doors on the exterior wall, Filoli has three). The library is very similar to Filoli but a door (to the dining room) replaces a bookcase. The dining room replaces the study at Filoli. The staircase is reversed left for right so shots of characters walking from the stairs to the foyer require one camera set-up instead of two; the staircase is also shifted to line up with the dining room door (it is aligned with the library door in Filoli). Re-positioning the staircase allowed for the addition of the living room directly across the hall from the library (there is a ladies waiting room and cloak room between the staircase and foyer in Filoli). The set ends with french doors a few feet from the reception hall, in Filoi there are several more rooms. The same set was used as both the dining room and Fallon's bedroom. The living room served as the master bedroom as well as Steven's bedroom (with a wall re-positioned) with doors replaced/added and fireplace mantles changed.
    Season three and later: the staircase was widened and positioned opposite the foyer (replacing the reception hall). The solarium was added behind the staircase. The dining room was redecorated including the addition of niches flanking the door to the hall and reproduction wallpaper from the Winterthur collection (it was not used as Fallon's bedroom - or any other room - after this). The conservatory was added opposite the dining room (where the staircase had been located), furniture from the reception hall was used to decorate it. The french doors in the hall outside the dining room were replaced with a niche housing a copy of the Venus de Milo, the columns and pediment surrounding the niche were previously a door surround in the reception hall.
    Season five: the conservatory was widened with the addition of arched bookcases. These bookcases had previously been used when the conservatory was re-configured for use as various bedrooms. The addition of the bookcases made the room asymmetrical - something you wouldn't find in a classical house like Filoli.
    When Dynasty was in production the kitchen at Filoli had yellow metal cabinets which had been installed during the 1960s. The Carrington mansion set had white painted kitchen cabinets similar to those original to Filoli. Set designers for the Michael Douglas film "The Game" restored Filoli's kitchen to its original appearance by replacing the cabinets.

    The first two seasons were shot on the 20th Century Fox studios lot. Most of Aaron Spelling's series were shot at 20th Century Fox and then later moved to the Warner Hollywood studios. His series with Leonard Goldberg were shot at the Burbank Studios, which are now known as the Warner brothers Studios. Most of the Dynasty cast had never been to Filoli until they did the reunion in 2006.

  • @tommoncrieff1154
    @tommoncrieff1154 Před 4 lety +3

    A recurring motif of Dynasty was the one person you didn't want to see showing up INSIDE your high security home, office, personal safe space, followed by What are you doing here? or How did you get in here? You never needed to ask the first because we all knew the answer and the second was never explained!

    @homeric9 Před 16 lety +2

    There is a scene early in season 2 where Blake and Krystle are having brekfast in the dining room andd Fallon comes down the main staircase..that would be based on the Fioli floorplan sort of. The set as we remember it is aesthetically the same as Filoli but re-arranged. The pilot for Dynasty shows the layout of the house and you can see where the design for the set came from.

  • @homeric9
    @homeric9 Před 16 lety +1

    This room on the Dynasty set became the the main staircase entry I believe in the following season. Producers remodelled the set at some point based on segments of the Filoli estate to allow for better flow. The orignal scene between the 2 happened in the formal living room at the end of the main hall to the right.

  • @fonnyjonny
    @fonnyjonny Před 15 lety +2

    The first two seasons were actually shot at the Filoli mansion in san mateo. Once the success of the show was assured, the producers decided to build a set based on the original house in the Hollywood studios.

  • @homeric9
    @homeric9 Před 16 lety +1

    I'm sure they played around withthe set as well in these early years so anything is possible in terms of individual scenes. There is a clip where Krystle greets SammyJoe for the 1st time and enters the library from the great room through doors under the main staircase. The only time I recall those doors ever being used. A solarium was installed in the general area later (small room I have a website that has pics of the set).

  • @homeric9
    @homeric9 Před 16 lety

    Marion has the clip where Alexis is poaching supplies for her studio. It shows much the original layout and how the set was changed. Note in the scene as Krystle is leading Alexis to the living room Alexis is taking stock of the house, she looks up the staircase that was later moved from the end of the hall to the center of the house. Though we don't see it in the clip.

  • @homeric9
    @homeric9 Před 16 lety

    The original Carrington set was modelled after the Filoli Estate which has a large living area as you enter from the foyer. The orignal encounter between the 2 was in what became the formal living room which was down the hall to the right at the end of the hall.

    After what happened in your studio, Alexis, I wouldn't use the word "bloody" around Krystle. Might give her ideas.

  • @homeric9
    @homeric9 Před 16 lety

    I did say it was after season 2 that the set was redesigned. The foyer itself may have been established but it's location was shifted after season 2. The great room was eliminated on the set and a formal foyer took it's place. After that views down the main hall eliminated any access to the 2nd floor from there.

  • @Gatsbyesque
    @Gatsbyesque Před 16 lety

    All of that still makes the setup here extremely peculiar... This extravagant 'living area' ("great room?") still appears to be directly across from the entry way in the place where the foyer had already moved to by this point in the series...

    I was wondering the same thing, Nudedude. It looks more open and the furniture seems rearranged slightly. It also appears to be directly across from the front door/entry way, where the foyer would normally be... LOL I'm confused.

  • @Gatsbyesque
    @Gatsbyesque Před 16 lety

    Homeric, your explanations make sense... but my only issue with it is that these clips ARE from Season 2. The new foyer directly across from the entry way had already been introduced and established by this time. If there was still a staircase across from the dining room by then (there definitely was because I remember the breakfast scene you're talking about), it must have been a secondary one or one of the back stairways.
