Opening the Cabin for Spring | Planting in a Forest

  • Welcome back to the cabin! It's been four months since we last visited, and winter really did a number on the place. While the cabin itself is fine, the heavy snow and strong winds caused significant damage to our pine trees. We had previously hired someone to clean up the dead and downed pines, but now we have another mess on our hands.
This trip, we brought up 40-50 white spruce trees from our local Conservation District to plant around the cabin for more shelter and to enhance the beauty of the area. Before we could start planting, we had to clear away the fallen trees and get the fire going to burn the debris. It was a lot of unexpected work, but we pushed through it.
We used an auger to plant the white spruces, spacing them 9 feet apart along the property line where they will get plenty of sunlight. These trees are native to Michigan and can grow up to 2 feet per year in good conditions, which is faster than we expected. We hope they will provide privacy and beauty for generations to come.
Along the way, we discovered a tiny hummingbird nest and even found a jack pine tree that we decided to transplant closer to the cabin. Did you know that jack pine cones need extreme heat, like from a fire, to release their seeds?
Thank you for joining us on this adventure. We did a lot of work, some planned and some not, but we had a blast. Stick around until the end of the video for a special bonus clip! See you next time!

Enjoyed this. I grew up in a beautiful forest but now live in a desert transition zone. You are fortunate to be able to just plant and let nature take care of the trees. Here you could never do that. They’d die.

What a beautiful trail! I also love those trees you planted and have never seen a jackpine! How interesting!

Didn't know you guys had a second channel! You just popped up in my suggestions so happy to be a new sub! I've been toying with starting a second channel more focused to pantry and food preservation as my current channel @savoryandsage is struggling a little to grow. Its been a myriad of homestead/herbal style content so I think I have two different audiences who aren't interested in the same content. So thinking of keeping my current one more herbal and wild edible focused which is my passion! I "retired" two years ago Rachel from nursing. I call it retirement but really it was early retirement lol! I get the change...an awesome change but certainly a transition period as you figure out how to no longer be that working person! Been watching you guys a long time....we enjoy your videos and your vibe, you're alot like my husband and I lol! Thanks for the second channel inspiration🥰

Having diverse content on a single channel can be difficult on CZcams. A single channel with homesteading and off-grid cabin stuff can attract two different kinds of people. And in the end, can have a negative impact on engagement. So it just makes sense for us to split them up.

Sad to see all the damage done to your trees from the heavy snowstorm. Lots of hard work cleaning up, but so rewarding. I love seeing you two give back to the forest. It will be so beautiful seeing those White Pinecone trees growing. I have never heard of a Jack Pine tree, very interesting info bout the pinecones. Thanks for taking us on a trip to the cabin!

Everything do is planned. It is your life with nature. Just like your garden. Your new trees will be very happy at the cabin. Those were my dad's favorite tree when we lived in upper Michigan.

We bought white spruce and balsam fir from our CCC. We got them all planted the week of Arbor Day week. The Christmas Tree farm we go to every year sell Balsam Fir, Fraser Fir, White Spruce and a White Pine.

Fir trees are beautiful, slow growers. They have firm straight trunks growing branch dense, with soft-tipped needles.
Deer have a huge appetite for firs though....
Tree farms in lower Peninsula Mich have a hard time keeping the deer from disfiguring them

All the bent over trees, can you just cut them back and stake them? Will they grow?

Can you explain if every state has a conservation place with trees like yall bought?

    • @toddrachel
      @toddrachel  Před 2 měsíci

Pretty much all states have them. Some call them by different names. Some go by names like "Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs)" which are common in states like Ohio, Minnesota, and North Carolina. They are basically Federal program that started back in the 1930's after the big dust bowl problem. You can learn more here: www.nacdnet.org/

Contemplate water issues long term. All good otherwise.
