I remember dropping everything and just staring at the TV, unable to breathe lest the magic was broken if I did, whilst I absorbed this performance! That sudden gut suspending absorption still affects me, EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!! no matter the times I play it! 💖
Despite the hilarious anarchic antics, these guys were true artists. Thank you Paul, Richard and Tim for showing the World what Australia is all about. Time to go to the Irish Rebellion Monument at Waverley Cemetary.
Paul Mcdermott's voice is unsurpassed, but that really showed the their talent for harmony. Amazing. I only wish they had made more like this. How Mcdermott wasn't a bigger star with a voice like that, is beyond me.
Nah, i think Mcdermott's voice isn't that great. But he definitely knows how to use it, and more importantly arranging the songs so they let him show him off what he can do well whilst using Tim and Richard to back him up in the places where he is weakest. Like the Beatles alone they're ho-hum but together they transfer into mecha-DAAS
@@chugs1984 No voice is beyond a crack or two. But i have to disagree. If you see him in some of his more recent carpark type behind the scenes shows his voice is still something to behold. The thing is he knows how to use it. If he doesn't need to stretch it he doesn't. If he does he does.
Part of his issues i think have stemmed from the good old mental health side of things. If i remember he had a issue with a stalker also. He also paints etc So he has not always been in the limelight.
Defiantly the best Version of this song. Beautiful harmonies. The original Irish singers sing this really raw and scratchy. DAAS should have done more serious songs. Cause they could damn well sing!!
This is an incredible performance...the fact that in recent years they have turned this song into one of the comedic highpoints of the show is testament to their many and varied talents.
My Great Great Great Grandfather was transported from Cork to Sydney Town in 1818, on the prison ship Martha. He died in 1857 after earning his freedom and running a farm on the Hawkesbury river to feed Sydney Town. His “crime” was stealing a cow to feed his family in Enniskillen. I am proud to be his descendent, and I’m proud of my Irish Catholic “convict” ancestry. James Smith, my GGG grandfather.
Having seen this years before, I was walking the Royal Canal on Bloom's Day 1998 whilst in Dublin for a friends wedding. It rang through my head with every step.
gibsonic yep the big gig was great, DAAS are great and I’m watching it now because I too remember seeing it that night and it hit the right note with me at the time.
I love this. Their typical 'serious song' formation. They all look really good from those camera angles. Whoever worked that out for them was a damn genius. XDD ...I wish Richard would look at me like that. ;)
Ok - here's a funny one. I bumped into Paul at Jamberoo - we were both there with our families- I thanked him for the entertainment and fun; he was caught off guard- he didn't expect to be recognised in oversized boardie's etc - but as we were dressed the sane - it was ok! Two middled aged men, with their kids at a family fun park. Isn't lie strange.
At QMF they managed to offend everyone who didn't "get' them but when they did this, there wasn't a dry eye in the house...despite all the schtick they did with it.
makes people off the x factor look awful , this is singing as only purest know. brilliant. had this on tape ( yes vhs , remember them...) but couldnt find it . never thought i would see it again . fantastic
I always found the DAAS to be an overly smug and self-satisfied outfit and was never a fan of them in their day (though I did always enjoy their harmonies). But, my God, this is SUPERB. Pure class. Respect. I dips me lid.
Brilliant, as usual. I remember watching this on "The Big Gig" back in the day. This song has additional pathos and meaning for Irish-Australians, such as myself, Paul and Tim. There is the meaning behind "The Auld Triangle" insofar as for the Irish convicts, but there is additional meaning in the part about Brendan Behan. He was one of Ireland's greatest poets and writers. He was the voice of Ireland's workers and downtrodden. His funeral is considered to be the third-largest in Irish history, after those of Michael Collins and Charles Stewart Parnell, which speaks volumes about his place in Irish culture. Here's the original "Lament for Brendan Behan", sung by the Clancy Brothers. :czcams.com/video/dGx-Ty3Zy6E/video.html

Same here
Me too… never forgot it
I also clearly remember watching this performance on TV. So long ago, still amazing.

Gives me goosebumps every time I hear this. I love the dead stunned silence at the end before the audience applauded.

There is something magic about this version. It seriously stopped me dead when I heard it. Richard's voice is underrated.
Underrated? By whom?

Of all the versions of this song, this is by far my favourite. 30+ years later. Love these guys. Respect.

Every bloody time. Astounding.
The beauty of this performance brings me to tears ❤
These guys deserve an award for this.
Saw this the night they performed it on The Big Gig. Still holds up brilliantly. Outstanding!
gibsonic yep the big gig was great, DAAS are great and I’m watching it now because I too remember seeing it that night and it hit the right note with me at the time.
Same here I've recorded it on my VHS
Fuck, they were good. FUCK! They were good!
Ugh, right there with you.
True Aussie talent, true to the Irish convicts of the Penal Colony.
Beautiful.
Such an awesome rendition..wonderful
I play this at least once a day. It’s pure beauty.

Brilliant version, the best, so beautiful.

What they are doing with this on this current tour is just about the more hysterical thing I think I have ever seen them do.
Sa Winfield Absolutely. I'm cracking up just thinking about it now.
Right? ;-)
At QMF they managed to offend everyone who didn't "get' them but when they did this, there wasn't a dry eye in the house...despite all the schtick they did with it.
Give a definition of hysterical.
Haunting

yep, had this on VHS as well, taped off tele :) uploaded it as well, although not as good sonically as this upload,.

Must say voices were alright
Did Paul grow his beard specially for this song?
I hope so if only to be so fucking cool. Like Richard's eyebrow at 1:18.
*DEATH DISCO*
Oh DAAS , you're not quite Luke Kelly's raw blast of emotion but this version is alright ... thumbs up my delightful little bunch of ratbags XXX
haven't heard a bad version of this song
I have not this tho it's just brilliant
Hold my coat.
Maybe the best non - Dubliners version out there
Such voices were wasted with comedy. Would loved to have seen them take a more serious shot at making it as musical artists.
Great version but not the best by far, the dubliners own this.
Yeah, can't compete with Luke Kelly, but fair effort!
As much as i love the Dubliners, nah
This thrashes the Dubliners version by a margin immeasurable.
Not a patch on the Dubliners.
