  • Squid's Visit Vs Can You Spare A Dime Review! Nickelodeon released a great episode from season three called "Can You Spare A Dime" or lesser known "Squidward Quits His Job", while in season six, a HORRIBLE season, Nick aired "Squid's Visit". I chose these two for the versus because they both portray Squidward staying over at SpongeBob's house differently. I believe that Squidward in Can You Spare A Dime was justified and funny, where as in Squid's Visit, when Squidward was over at SpongeBob's house (which looked like Squidward's House), he was very scared, creeped out and just looking for his vacuum cleaner that SpongeBob STOLE. I tend to do a versus from time to time and this was a long time overdue. CHECK IT OUT!

    SERIES SUMMARY
The Alpha Jay Show reviews animation episodes, animated TV movies, cartoons, and other things as a main series. I have reviewed many things from Fairly Oddparents to SpongeBob to Teen Titans Go to The Amazing World Of Gumball and many more. Expect a fair, open-minded and non-pandering review of whatever episode I use. Bear in mind while I do use copyrighted material, it is highly likely that my content falls under the legal defense of fair use.

    SHOW SUMMARY
A square yellow sponge named SpongeBob SquarePants lives in a pineapple with his pet snail, Gary, in the city of Bikini Bottom on the floor of the Pacific Ocean. He works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab. During his time off, SpongeBob has a knack for attracting trouble with his starfish best friend, Patrick. Arrogant octopus Squidward Tentacles, SpongeBob's neighbor, dislikes SpongeBob because of his childlike behavior.

    -
    TITLE SUMMARY
The title refers to the fact that in Squid's Visit, the episode spends all of the episode focusing on the vacuum cleaner, only to ditch it in the end.

You know what the writers don't think about in this season? They don't know what Spongebob WON'T do. Like the creators of Bugs bunny said, "Bugs isn't some crazed loony, he's somebody you understand what he must do in order to make it through these events." So, Chuck jones said he'll create scenarios where Bugs has to act in order to survive. What these guys don't understand is that these characters are still people to us. Chuck creates characters, while they just create a cartoon with no real understanding. That's why we hate these type of episodes because they made them completely heartless. Characters should never be one note because one detail won't fix an already broken episode. "Can you spare a dime" pulls this idea right, because, while Spongebob is annoying to some, he is a down right nice person, which is where the 'down fall' is understandable.

Can you spare a dime was very significant for me because it shows the most natural relationship between the characters that has been lost completely in later seasons. Its also one of the episodes where spongebob is 3 dimensional in his character, where he is nice, childish but mature enough to assert himself in a logical and reasonable matter without turning his character into the asshole but he isn't oblivious to when he is being exploited or has his valid limits. Its very rare that you can see episodes where both sides of the plot are empathize, and Season 3 often did it well. You always get better cartoons when characters are treated as people and not as walking gags 24-7. I like the episodes where Spongebob is actually intelligent enough to know when other characters are acting selfish or ignorant. In a parallel to when most characters see it in him in the same way. Thats why this felt so balanced. I hate the episodes where they make the characters oblivious to each other because it negates real chemistry and like the fairly odd parents (old seasons) the comedy came from chemistry not from forced gags or torture.

@Lloyd. Man I wish you wrote for this show. This comment is spot on! I agree with everything. I miss when the characters weren't so one dimensional. Now they're oblivious. Other than the 'Dime' episode, "Krusty Love" is another great example where spongebob puts his foot down. Even some side characters did it. Such as "Opoosite Day" where the lady said "I wouldn't sell a house if you were the last Squidward on earth!"

I think one of the best jokes of them being underwater, was the episode where Sandy dared Spongebob and some others to go up on land, Mr Krabbs gave him a cup for some water, sponegbob swishes it and drinks the "Full" glass, but it looks empty because water won't look different being in a cup because there's already water in the cup

I used to really love how angry SpongeBob could get as it made him a more relatable and real character to me. Yet despite how annoyed he was, he still hadn't abandoned his initial goal to help Squidward and his anger was completely justified. This just goes to show the love and care put in by the writers' which I totally respect.
With Squid's Visit, I actually love the idea. FOR A HORROR SHOW. Imagine that idea tackled in an episode of the Twilight Zone, it'd be awesome! Obviously though, SpongeBob and that idea were a complete mismatch. For the story to work, you have to make your hero of the show as creepy, unlikable and psychopathic as possible. It's not enjoyable to watch SpongeBob be degraded to a creep, when I used to be inspired by his positivity and good nature which used to be NOT scary.
Seriously, they made having a good nature and being kind/naive seem very off-putting and disturbing.
You do want us to like this character right?

Mr Krabs could have not felt it due to sensory adaptation, like how you sometimes forget when you wear a watch on your wrist all day. If the dime was in his pocket for a long time, it's possible he could have gotten used to the feeling, and thus not notice it.

I just noticed something else, if you look at "Can you Spare a Dime?" you can see that a lot of the animation is really expressive. Characters and objects distort and small things happen to emphasize the emotions, and by extension, the situation.
In "Squid's Visit", this is not the case, even in areas where it should be. Take the scene where Squidward is looking at the replicas of the self portraits, as he says the line "and they're all better than mine", imagine if his face was stretched so his mouth was smaller and his eyes were bigger. This would have emphasized the situation more and exaggerated Squidward's reaction.
Essentially, a part of old SpongeBob's charm was also in the animation, which looks better in the newer seasons, but has become less expressive and by extension, less humourous.

I wouldn't call it genuinely good, but I would call it fascinating. And what really saves it is that Squidward gets the happy ending. He sleeps soundly in the replica of his house while Spongebob sleeps in the burnt remains of his actual tiki.

I'll say I hate new episodes mainly because sponge bob acts more like an idiot than he really should be, SpongeBob should put others needs above his own and notice and care when people are in pain emotional or physical not blissfully ignore it, in squidwards visit he's just selfish and unlikable and no sane person would act that way
in can you spare a dime while squidward is somewhat unlikable you can somewhat understand why he got that way and no one is subjected to unneeded slapstick comedy
a character should only be hurt if it either serves the plot, it's funny because they deserve it or they are in a fight, but if it's played realistically on someone who does nothing wrong it just comes off as sadistic or sad
sheesh it's basic writing 101 guess they just hire anyone at Nick

Can You Spare a Dime is just a part of my childhood and it is an episode that I remember very well and very fondly. Plus, seeing Spongebob get mad is something that I actually enjoy watching because it doesn't seem that the writers of the show do this anymore very often. Him having this emotion makes him seem more dimensional as a character.

5:25 I've brought this up talking about new Spongebob before. There is rarely a quiet moment in post-film Spongebob, with there almost always being background music, and just about every movement punctuated by a sound effect, in addition to everyone just shouting their lines half the time. There were quiet moments in pre-film Spongebob, where the characters' dialogue was allowed to carry a scene, and while they did use sound effects a fair bit, they were usually used for comedic emphasis, like that squishy blinking sound, or for characterization, like with everyone's unique walking noises. Old Spongebob respected the intelligence of its audience, about as much as this kind of cartoon can, whereas new Spongebob feels like it's just yelling and waving its arms trying to keep the viewer's attention
