In 1975 I met the love of my life. I married him in 1979 and this song, FERNANDO was our song! And still is - in 2019 we will celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. Thank you ABBA for Fernando. Xxxx❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🍾
Congratulations for Ur upcoming anniversary.

Deirdre Ryan I hope u guys have fun
Deirdre Ryan tell me.. was the 70s awesome :) I heard it was such a beautiful time, this song is hands down my favorite ABBA song well this and dancing queen and I’m 25 and i fucking love abba more then an other CRAP RAP group of today
As a rocker growing up in the 70s I would never admit to liking ABBA..but WOW, they really were gifted..So many great songs
In the 1970s ABBA was seen as naff. Yet they've aged much much better than all that progressive progrock sh*t.
gotta be open-minded to all music , music is art
Nowadays metalheads and hard rock fans are open about their love & respect for ABBA. Lemmy in Motörhead and Ritchie Blackmore were both big ABBA fanatics and were open about it, even back in the late 70s. Any rocker that likes ABBA should check out the band Ghost, they are can fill an arena headling these days so it's likely that many of you know of their music.
Their discography has so much ABBA inspired pop sorcery mixed with an tradtional late 70s/early 80s heavy metal/hard rock and a hundred other sounds from different eras. Their newest album is recorded at ABBA's old studio and you can hear the same piano as used in Money, Money, Money on two songs on that Ghost album. Spillways is one of those two. Highly recommend. Cheers mate!
Was afraid to admit it in the 70's too! Love them tho!
I know this opinion is very controversial but I much prefer this song to the Beatles song "She loves you". "Fernando" is about the Mexican revolution. The other one is another love song among hundreds.
Their melody purify the soul❤ much love from Kigali Rwanda 🇷🇼
🌹🇷🇼
This song reminds of my grandparents. They both fought in the Mexican Revolution from 1910 to 1920. They were separated in the conflict when the train they were on was blown up. My grandmother and grandfather happened to be on opposite ends of the train when the bomb went off. Each thought the other was dead. Two years later they walked past each other on a train platform. They were married for 75 years.
Beautiful
This story is good enough to be in the film!
Speechless!!
Woah wtf...I-
Classic
My Grandfather always loved this song. When he was on his deathbed, I played this for him, and while he was sick and exhausted, he cried but smiled when he heard what was playing and did his best to sing the words despite being short of breath. I'll forever think of him when I hear this song now. Rest In Peace Grandpa, Francisco Fernando Cabral.
I'm so sorry for your loss. It will get better, I hope that he is happy now wherever he is
Its very touching.
I wish my grandchildren sing songs of my favorites in my death bed.
I'm so sorry my guy
Sorry for your loss
Very good memories for you!
Sorry about your loss.
One of the most meaningful, albeit misunderstood songs by abba. Even my old folks think this is a love song about a lad named Fernando. This song makes me think of my grandfather who fought in WW2. "I was so afraid Fernando,...none of us were prepared to die...I am not ashamed to say the roar of guns and cannons almost made me cry...they were shining there for...liberty". So poignant and powerful.
Everytime I hear the chorus of this song I remember my uncle Fernando and the night he passed away it was a night full of bright stars. I miss you Tio
Abba wrote three versions of Fernando. The first was in Swedish and told the story of lost love. The second was English and told the story of two veterans in the 1910 Mexican Civil War. The third was in Spanish.
My father loved this song. He fought as an infantryman on the front lines in three wars. This song makes me cry for him.
I had the great experience of meeting and conversing with Panch Villa's widow. It was in 1971 in Chihuahua City. She was 79 years old. Her name was Maria de la Luz Corral viuda de Villa. She had a powerful voice, joyful and full of confidence. It was memory that I treasure. In her house she had the car in which Panco was assassinated, full of bullet holes.
@@tribulusterrestris27 Wow. What a wonderful happenstance. You should write about it in the newspaper or something.
@NextWorld Pancho said to Luz that he wanted to kill a certain fellow. Luz said to him, NO! he is a good man, Don't do this and he spared the man. After Pancho's death, there were four wives that wanted the big 50 room house. By then the fellow she spared was president of Mexico. Somehow he had heard of this conversation and he granted the house to her.
@@tribulusterrestris27 With a little fleshing out, that story would be worth at least a couple hundred bucks in Reader's Digest.
@NextWorld Thank you, Next, but my part was tiny. These other accounts are just in the historical record. But to share another bit, Pancho and his men were gathering money from business owners and individuals to fund their military operations. That's where he met Luz in her mother's little store. He liked her looks, but most of all, he liked that she was articulate. She was 18 years old, and he proposed marriage. She was the second wife. It is said that he had more than forty "wives." But Luz had a special distinction. She is the only wife who had a marriage certificate. They went to the Catholic priest, who said that Pancho would need to do confession. Panco said that he had committed so many sins and done so many bad deeds that the priest would simply not have time enough to hear it all. The priest then said, "Well, then let's just skip it," and the marriage ceremony proceeded as scheduled.
Luz became an important part of the revolution. At one point, for her safety, she went to Cuba briefly, then spent about two years in San Antonio, TX. She spoke to me in good English, which presumably she learned in TX.
Listening to an ABBA song is like eating potato chips. You can't stop after having just one.
EXACTLY 3 mins later I’m listening to gimme gimme gimme
That's a really good analogy.

If it sounded good then it'll sound good now... music doesn't deteriorate like that

The most beautiful song ABBA ever did. The words & tune just flow together perfectly.
Agreed. My fav ABBA for sure. Great story lyrics, too.
@@douglascutler1037 Hi! Absolutely! One can close one's eyes & almost hear the crackling fire & the cannon in the distance. Thanks for your comment.
ABBA has lots of these beautiful classical style songs in their catalogue.
ABBA is known for their big wall-of-sound, big unison (third voice) songs, but their most beautiful ones are their more classical ones which they back-off the wall-of-sound and huge third voice chorus.... These more classically inspired songs promote the emotion and beauty.
Anni-Frid Lyngstad on lead is heavenly. She has refined vocal vocal skills and has mastered diaphragmatic breathing.
Listen to her original 'Fernando' in Swedish, a huge solo hit for her in 1975. It's breathtakingly beautiful.
A year later ABBA recorded this English version. Also, a huge hit for ABBA. So this is technically an ABBA cover of Anni-Frid's original Swedish language 'Fernando'.
A few very beautiful ABBA songs that have more classical stylings.
- One Man One Woman
- Andante Andante
- When All Is Said And Done
- Gonna Sing You My Love Song
- Like An Angel Passing Through My Room
- Tropical Paradise
- I, Wonder
- I Let The Music Speak
- Our Last Summer
The brunette ABBA girl has an incredibly beautiful voice.
@@danbike9 Hi! Yes, indeed! "Andante, Andante", "Our Last Summer", & back to the Latin sound with "Chiquitita" - these are 3 of my faves. You saw where Metallica paid tribute to ABBA in their home country by playing "Dancing Queen", yeah? Said to myself, "Well, I can die now, because I've seen EVERYTHING!". But that just speaks to ABBA's lasting universal appeal. And, of course, there's the HUGE Broadway musical, "Mama Mia!". I think 1 thing that makes them so extraordinary is that their beautiful voices blend & harmonize so well. Listening to them is like strolling through a gorgeous formal garden - every flower, bush, & tree carefully placed to compliment all the others, presenting a perfectly coordinated whole. We're all fortunate to be able to HEAR what that garden SOUNDS like, thanks to ABBA. And thank YOU for your informative comment.
Chiquitita takes that cake, but this song is pretty close.
I can´t stop crying with this amazing song; reminds me of my lovely daughter, who died in 2020. My pain will last forever, but Abba kind of comforts me.

From South Africa. Love ABBA's songs ❤🎉🎉
Their music style is unsurpassed in my opinion, more refined than rock. The sound the world loves best!
i am Mexican and and I am very grateful for this beautiful song that this group composed, the song is inspired by the monologue of a Mexican war veteran who tries to talk with Fernando, his battle partner, and nostalgically reminds him of moments when they participated in the Battle of La Angostura in 1847 in the context of the American War of Intervention, referring to the fact that freedom was finally achieved for Mexico.

_"Now we're old and grey, Fernando"_ had me choking back tears like never before. Now that I'm in my 50s, my emotions have become supercharged. My manopause notwithstanding, ABBA can at once make one wistful for the past and hopeful for the future.

Can you hear the drums Fernando?
I remember long ago another starry night like this
In the firelight Fernando
You were humming to yourself and softly strumming your guitar
I could hear the distant drums
And sounds of bugle calls were coming from afar
They were closer now Fernando
Every hour every minute seemed to last eternally
I was so afraid Fernando
We were young and full of life and none of us prepared to die
And I'm not ashamed to say
The roar of guns and cannons almost made me cry
There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, Fernando
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, Fernando
Though I never thought that we could lose
There's no regret
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando
Now we're old and grey Fernando
And since many years I haven't seen a rifle in your hand
Can you hear the drums Fernando?
Do you still recall the frightful night we crossed the Rio Grande?
I can see it in your eyes
How proud you were to fight for freedom in this land
There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, Fernando
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, Fernando
Though I never thought that we could lose
There's no regret
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando

In May 1966, alone, 350,000 Igbos were killed in Kaduna, Zaria, Kano, and Sokoto, alone. I joined the army, to defend a piece of earth, where my people could be free, from the constant pogrom. We would not have lost, without the UNHOLY, ahistorical alliance of America, Britain, Russia, Egypt, etc. Israel broke ranks with the US, to give us some support. The Vatican, Italy, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Canada, Tanzania, Enegal, Haiti, and other, Christian nations, threatened with US sanctions, gave us FOOD but, not arms, to defend ourselves. Abba's Fernando brings tears, to my 79-year old eyes.
Absolutely...
Never really was an Abba fan, appreciated their skill as a cut above normal pop bands rather than loved them - but this song is on a whole different level.
I am 88 years old and will never tire of ABBA. I listen to them almost every day and watch their videos constantly. Although I was a big "rock and roller" and rhythm and blues man I am completely obsessed with their stunning beauty and angelic voices. I am in love from afar with Agnetha and Frida......both then and today. I attend some of their tribute shows and I consider the group from Canada the best. Oddly my favorite song is "I Do, I Do, I Do. I Do, I Do" but I have about 8 that I play over and over.
That's great man.. I'm a younger rock'n'roller from another generation. An heavy metal / hard rock fanatic. Bands from the 70s and 80s mainly. I'm 37 years old. I've always crushed on Agnetha(Looks like an Swedish shieldmaiden from some artists depiction in a painting) but both ladies are beautiful. Especially in this video: ) Their talent is immense, too. I Do, I Do is a great tune, my mother loved that song so i heard it a lot growing up.
My favorite tune of theirs changes between any of Angeleyes, Fernando, Thank You For The Music, SOS, Dancing Queen depending on how i'm feeling on any given day:) Cheers mate!
I love the Abba 's Songs, every one sounds pretty beautiful...
Easily one of the best songs ever wrote. Voices of angels.
If there's a list of songs that immediately give the listener pause, this must be at the top of that list. Everything, from the voices, the orchestration, to the lyrics cause one to get lost in the moment. Fernando, IMHO, is a masterpiece for the ages.
I was in primary school year 4 when this song was released. All the girls in the class used to sing it to our Spanish classmate Fernando. He was quite cute and we all liked him.
Dewey ❤
The 70s show🔥😭😍 Donna dancing with Erik💖
Donna was dancing with Hyde. Not Eric
@@chriswills936 at the end they dance and sing the song.

I am here coz of that 🤗
I just watched that
Cece CC exactly why I’m hooked on this song🙂
Dear Lord, somewhere since music has died. This was exquisitely, perfectly, beautiful. There's no way a melody like that can ever be described as "old".
Out standing I was 16 when this song was popular
My mother loved this song. RIP Mami, I will always love you and I miss you every second.
Why does listening to ABBA songs in my 50s just make me cry? Goddammit!
Their songs are full of melancholy, even the happier upbeat tunes of theirs have this element. Melancholy is something writers, musicians and artists in Sweden often have included in their art since decades before ABBA come along.. few have done it as well as ABBA before or after though:) Often makes one happy while also a bit nostalgic and sad, i reckon that feeling increases the more you age and think back on the good ol' days. It's also just masterful songwriting in general.. that evokes strong feelings/emotions as a result.
Two very talented musicians, two ladies whose voices blended like no others. A cute, sexy one and a classic beauty. Together they made history.
In this song, the lead singer is Annfried.
@@peterfarrel9629 Of course
@@peterfarrel9629 Two musicians and two ladies makes four

Holy y Fernando
I love ABBA for ever !❤
