Yes very fair point. One thing I found crazy is Nintendo made ~$12bn in revenues in 2023. If they believed damages of $2.5m were caused by Yuzu, that amount is 0.0002% of their revenues... sounds like a lot of bad PR for such a small amount don't you agree? Crazy stuff
Thanks for sharing- on the flip side though there will definitely be new emus popping up as has historically happened, so there will likely be a way to preserve and archive in the future
I think the pirates to an extent need to take some accountability as well, it is to the people that legally purcahsed the game and chose to emulate the copy they bought i feel bad for, the pirates who brag and boast they have been pirating switch games early over the internet, not so much tbh
Hey James that is a fair perspective and I can empathize with you; what do you think about this? My belief is the first priority of emulation is the preservation and future-proofing accessibility of games, and people should award developers and companies for fantastic games by purchasing them (why I own 4/ 5 copies of Outer Wilds for instance lol)! I have 8 or 9 consoles that require various TVs (HD, CRT, 4k, etc.), cables of all types, upscaling hardware, etc. to get running right. Sometimes it is way easier for me to load up an emu on my phone or laptop and honestly can look way better sometimes. The hard reality is that pirating is bolstered by limiting that accessibility of older games and I feel like it is why these types of software seem to target Nintendo more often than PlayStation and Xbox (Game Pass and PS Plus bring so many retro games to platforms, easy backwards compatibility, console exclusive games going to PC) ... etc. Added, pirates seem to love a challenge and Nintendo's weak encryption and locked down platform created an environment for that. Would love to hear what you think about that!
@@forrestspellman when it comes to older games I can empathize with that, I personally don't take issue with that specifically, granted say I have a physical copy, ill likely opt to rip that, but I myself have downloaded gamecube and nes and snes roms, the type of pirates I am not the biggest fan of are the ones that will do so with current nintendo switch games (as they can be purchased new at retailers or even used at some) and then bragging and boasting all over the internet, as I feel if it is made available, it is best to support the developer, however, like you stated, if they do not make said content available like older titles, then I see it as it's not so much purposefully stealing as it is thay being the only option, so I am understanding towards that
@@forrestspellman like for example I don't expect someone to buy a nes cartridge for like 500 dollars past its actual worth over choosing to download said rom and play it, in my opinion nintendo brought that onto themselves as they could have maintained the virtual console that they used to have on wii and wii u and 3ds as well, so when it comes to pirating older titles, nintendo themselves refused to offer a service, so no harm no foul
Yeah spot on I 100% agree with you, the whole current gen software piece and their collection of money for their efforts I have to imagine is big part of why Nintendo came after them compared to Dolphin for instance. They were so public about it too lol. Thanks for sharing!
I am hearing news that Citra is being shut down too (same team I think). That proves the point right? Because 3DS is very unsupported by Nintendo and additionally hard to emulate. They don't seem to care about their IP at all once released.
All of a sudden Nintendo cares about dmca laws. 😂

@forrestspellman Yeah. Unfortunately, their fans will keep buying their games no matter what Nintendo does. 😔
Let me guess no more chip shortages
But this is so fucked up because we can't even save our games and play the hacks

Nothing. They went after Yuzu because they were charging.
Yeah good point, I agree that it likely played a big role in Nintendo's decision to act.

Really? That is a bummer to hear. Thanks for sharing I will have to go learn a bit more about that.
