    Fujifilm's new GFX50S II is a bit of the same, but the insides have been changed a bit. They also made it "affordable" at $4,000, but it is a drop from the GFX100S, which is $10,000. Brandon gives us a quick tour of it today!

    The Canon 24-70 F2.8 II USM is a retrofocus lens so it actually extends backwards from most other lens (It's at it's longest at 24 rather than 70) but a key item about the visible barrel criticism: That particular lens has a lens hood that attaches before the barrel extension so you can't actually see the extra barrel length when it's used in full as sold. The F2.8 III USM doesn't extend as far (so the issue isn't as visible) but it does demonstrate the stated criticism as described.

  • @PitboyHarmony1
    @PitboyHarmony1 Před 2 lety +20

    I appreciate a medium format at this price and ability level, but I am more glad that you are not forced into a bundle with that lens.
    That lens does not help this camera. I'm put off by its variable aperture, and honestly ... in these photo examples, it just looks soft.
    Anyone not a newbie investing in this body is going to go for the GF 32-64mm F4 ... hands down ... twice the glass, albeit 4x's the price.
    That said, I do get that they are aiming at the med format first timers, who right out of the gate can get into it without putting out $2500 for glass.
    For those people, its nice that they are chucking it out at $500.
    I'm just saying that its a very good thing its not a required bundle.

    • @LimitedWard
      @LimitedWard Před 2 lety

      Apologies if this question is stupid, but why would variable aperture matter for a stills camera? I could see it making a difference for video, but aren't you getting more flexability with the variable aperture?

    • @PitboyHarmony1
      @PitboyHarmony1 Před 2 lety +1

      @@LimitedWard - Nope, not a dumb question at all. To the skilled eye a variable aperture lens zoom lens is remarkably softer sharpness wise, than a fixed aperture.
      The benefit to a variable for still shooting?
      A variable aperture like this allows for a much smaller, lighter zoom lens as you have the movement of aperture to compensate for a lot of the motion of elements in a zoom lens. This also means that variable zoom lenses will cost a lot less.
      In a fixed aperture zoom lens, movement of elements is all you have to gain focus, which means the lens has to be longer, larger and heavier ... therefore much, much more expensive to build mechanically and optically ... theres more elements of glass to move around.
      In a round about way, this different design also means that a variable aperture lens just cant get the same level of sharpness.

    • @SuttonBen
      @SuttonBen Před 2 lety +1

      @@LimitedWard Adding to Pitboy's great comment, variable apertures also become another factor to consider if you are shooting in manual mode. You zoom in and the image will come out darker because the lens is letting in less light. You then have to compensate, which can be frustrating if you are shooting professionally. Using a fixed aperture lens avoids this

    • @lobsterbark
      @lobsterbark Před 2 lety

      @@LimitedWard Variable aperture isn't a big deal by itself, it's just a mark of poor quality. If they are cheaping out not having a fixed aperture, they are obviously also cheaping out elsewhere, making the lens soft.
      Honestly zoom lenses in general suck anyways. Prime lenses are easier to use and higher quality, so that's all I use.

    Thanks again for a nice video! One thing that I found a bit confusing in this one was the speak about the sensor. First it was "completely different", then later in the video it was "the same". I had to rewatch parts to figure it out... So the sensor was same as in 50 mk 1, but the body is the same as the 100? OK, my 1st watch I maybe wasn't fully focused, and English isn't my mother tongue, so maybe this was clear for others :)

    Good video. The nostalgia you refer to in the film settings is an organic continuation of the medium itself. Because of this, it isn't nostalgia--more rhetorical flourish of a digital variety. Nothing is more beautiful than film, nothing even comes close. This is why the Canon 5D Classic is revered as nearly perfect. The 5D sought to attract film photographers at a time when all photographers were film photographers. And it succeeded. Nothing has changed. Your take on this is one of gadgetry: techy know-how over artistry (sorry). It is a little cold. And film is warm. Fujifilm understands this. I very much enjoy your rapid-fire erudition. But your Dell computer gives you away as tech-savy and.....well...you know. Where is your Mac?

    The reason you have to click in the command dial to switch between ISO and Aperture is because *every other GFX lens* has a dedicated aperture ring apart from this exact lens that you were using (and honestly, kinda weird that it doesn't have one, how much cost cutting are they really doing on something that is still priced as a high end lens?) - So USUALLY you would never be changing the aperture on the camera body, you'd always be changing it on the lens which is significantly better ergonomics.
    And for what it's worth, cheaper X mount lenses do the same thing and honestly you can kinda get used to it, especially if you use auto ISO anyway.

    Whats that x55 and x200?
    55mm and 200mm?
    Because that's clearly not 200x magnified
    Or is it 155% and 200%?

    Brandon is great host! Can we get more camera reviews for filming under 1.000€ with or without lens? Which cameras have low latency and are good for love streaming, good focus etc….
