Wild Mountain, Year After Fire | Velebit

  • Just a year ago a fire, believed to have been allegedly caused by lightning, caught the huge area of the Central Velebit, where the famous, longitudinal mountain hiking trail towards the south passes. (Premuziceva). During ten days the wind-worn fire destroyed many grassy peaks and fortunately did not spread to deep woods. In an unachievable and anhydrous area, the efforts of fire engineers and all those who joined had to be unimaginably big.
    It was expected that after a year that gray space would become green with new vegetation. Strong rain that washed the ground made their own. It seems that the consequences of the fire will be visible for a long time. I remember, it was the space of all those aromatic grass that everyone would enjoy... will it ever recover? "Damage to the wildlife" as media would report, isn't as noticeable but on a deserted terrain it will be difficult for an animal to return, especially to build a home.

    HRVATSKI PRIJEVOD:
(PB)

    Fire is natures cleaning agent. We have had multitudes of fires in our area this summer. I know some of them will not grow back in my lifetime. It's sad but yet is t a natural cycle of life. Thanks for sharing Pavle.

      Whole the year is gone and still no new grass grown ... I doubt the area will recover ever again. There are places in the mountain that are completely deserted after the fire like that that happened long, long ago in the past. Rocks and stone remained only that even started to roll down step by step through the time. The area is known by strong winds and harsh winters that simply do not allow any other plants to exist except that specific grass. Some bushes and even spruce start from seed brought by the wind or animals but soon they die ...
      this is what will surely change the look of the landscape.

      Oh yes, I noticed that the public is not overly surprised by the ever-increasing disasters and damages throughout the world ...
      perhaps we are aware that part of the blame for these climate change is also on us. Who knows what the future will bring?

    Well done job dear Pavle, cutting the scenes together with the beat time of the music. Yes, fire is good for new vegetation but it´s not so easy for the wild animals to come back, I think.
    Have a fine weekend my friend.

    Nice video. Excellent shots. Interesting narrative. This summer was extremely hot and it was raining a bit. It can be corrected now in September. And the rain will support the growth of new vegetation. They have burned the landscape since ancient times, and she has always been able to deal with it. It's not a man who can destroy everything by insensitive intervention. I greet a dear friend. CCCCCCCCCCCCCC74

      ... for the bears such the heat meant less berries and water especially when cubs need milk and drink. I noticed they are a bit smaller than they are expected to be in this time of the year. The rain as I think won't support the growth but wash out the seeds that will try to survive here. Whole the year is gone and the area is still without the grass almost at all. There are places in the mountain deserted by fire the same way long, long ago in the past. Stone and rocks is only what remained. You have seen such, yourself, I ma sure. That sharp grass was the only that couls stand those harsh winters and extremely strong winds ... nothing else survives there. Imagine, how long will it take for the wildlife to recover the trails they used through centuries? I have seen some bear footprints but do not believe I'll find them here next time.
      Thanks Igor.

    You chose great music to fit this video, Pavle. You must, at least, be happy that the fire did not venture into the woods for that could have been disastrous for wildlife. The wildlife is always what concerns me the most in these situations. I have horrible visions of tiny creatures not being able to escape.

      There is some trails that wildlife uses often and regularly so I tried to check them. What I have seen just on the edge of that burned area are the signs of bear with cub ... the footprints. I still have them in my mind not even trying to think about them any deeper. I noticed that those smaller were much smaller than I would expect ... in this time of the year cubs are expected to be at least a bit bigger. Imagine what such the disaster can mean for them ... it is not easy to start searching for the new home ... especially to leave the nearest spots where drinking water can be found. ... in the area where there is almost no water at all. I remember, there north, where horses occupied the area so that bears can't reach the small pond for their cubs are scared and although their mother can come and drink they stay far away waiting ... scared of the noise of bells attached on the necks of horses. ... if I add to such the troubles that there are no berries in the woods as usually I could find because the summer was extremely dry ... the survival of most of those creatures will be even harder. Visitors like tourists are another question that makes things even worse.
      Whole year is gone and still no new grass grown ... hope it will take some time to recover. There are places in the mountain that are completely deserted after the fire like that. The area is known by strong winds that simply do not allow any other plants to exist except that specific grass. Some bushes start from seed brought by the wind or animals but soon they die ...

    Though the scars will persist so it is with nature, and the cycle will come back around. We are here but for an eyeblink, no matter what we see and feel, nature is timeless. What we lament may well be a verdant oasis in the future, or even a gaping wound should things play out so. We will do what we can as stewards that care, but our efforts are a small thing in the grand scheme. You have more than done your fair share and I applaud you for your efforts to bring awareness and beauty to the rest of us. Even in its scarred condition I still see the beauty and the possibilities. Birds and rodents will drop seeds, the wind will cover them and new life, possibly from afar will take hold. Will it survive? Will we see it? Maybe yes, most likely no, yet we know how resilient and determined life can be.
    We will do our best and go back to the earth knowing we are a part of it. Be well Pavle.

      I know one particular place in the mountain where I often passed by but then I started to spend a bit more time there each time I visit that area. ... to breathe the fresh air even overnight. The view from there is exceptionally nice what amazes me. The place looks different each time I come. It is the grassy slope under a few white rocks. And one stone just to lean on in the shade if it's hot or get out of the wind if it's cold. I do not know why but once after spending quite a long time resting there, all in my own thoughts I finally stood up and patted that stone like we pat good old friend on shoulder when we have to leave. I always felt a kind of warmth in that stone. How many similar like me came there and did the same... through the centuries, thousands of years? How many fires happened near around? Who knows what the past that stone can witness? What is human life compared to that?
      Thank you for these nice words.

      Some say it will take a time to recover ... I hope thou if it is normal natural cyclus we have to accept it as is. Things change on this planet.
      It is known that many trees there never reach the size as they would be on some other places. Some even have a kind of typicaly curved stem for when young and the wind bows them down till they reach the power to fight against it with own strength. The bowed stem remains forever on amost of the trees. That sharp grass mixed with some aromatic plants stand as the only in most of areas with those bare grassy summits, exposed to severe cold with long lasting blizzards during winter and extreme heat during summer. ...I really respect the wildlife that succeeded to survive there.

    Dear pavle. Do forest fires in velebit often occur ?

    • @PavleBalenovic
      @PavleBalenovic  Před 5 lety +1

      In fact very rarely while lower down towards the coastline and more south especially during the summer fires cause huge damage especially to nature.
      Tourism is often the reason for that and sure careless people who do not cultivate their fields as in the past. Besides, climate changed through recent years dramatically ... it is warmer in general all over around and winds easily spread the fire over much wider area that ever before. In the Velebit mountain it is colder and summer lasts shortly ... winters are long and harsh. Nature takes care of the wilderness and wildlife on her own way..

    Moody..
    Fire needn't be a problem. On a small scale.. erosion however is always a sign things are f%cked up.. ..it will take plenty of time, certainly such a vast area..

    • @PavleBalenovic
      @PavleBalenovic  Před 6 lety

      ... yes, where recover is expected and possible. But here we all know about many areas that never recovered but remained deserted after similar disaster long, long ago in the past ...rocks and stone only. Long and harsh winters and extremely strong winds do not allow any plants to succeed except that specific sharp grass ... some seed of bushes, even spruce from wooded interior , taken by the wind or brought by animals start to grow but soon die not being strong enough to survive. It was big luck that those forests that are not far away didn't burn in fire.
      For the wildlife it will take long time to return ... that is completely different quastion for sure.
