Three days ago, I fell off a 20 ft ladder and landed on my back. I m 75 yrs old and in decent shape as I m still working and do physical work.
I did lose consciousness for 20 minutes and was taken by ambulance to the local hospital. The area behind my left lung were excruciatingly painful with ANY movement. They gave me fentanyl right away and sent me for x-rays and a ct scan.
I have a concussion, bruised ribs but no broken bones. Of course, I over did activity a day and a half later and it set me back a little. I m taking 1600 MG of ibuprofen twice a day. Not sleeping well but that s to be expected. When the ibuprofen wears off, I immediately know it. I keep moving, a little driving, a little stretching but I m so grateful I didn’t break anything. Still have a lump on the side of my head and don t even want to comb my hair on that side.
I could have broken my back, my neck, an arm or leg and didn’t.
I m going to attempt work tomorrow but very gingerly. I only missed one work assignment this week. If I don t work, I don t get paid so it s off to work tomorrow.
I am always rushing around, errands, work, etc.
My new motto is don t rush so much, get up earlier if need be and stay in the moment. Only think about what you are doing while you re doing it……
God is so good to me. Thank you Lord.

You don't actually sneeze any when your rib is fractured. You sneeze the same amount it just is more memorable when you sneeze with a broken rib, due to the pain. You dont generally remember a normal sneeze because there was nothing extravagant about it, your brain remembers events like that.

Going thru this for just about two weeks now and am naturally doing many of these movements and postures. Helps me to feel better as the body develops a lot of aches and pains during the periods of little movement.
A few other suggestions I have for those experiencing a rib fracture for the first time :
    - when you feel the need to cough or sneeze, stand if you can and hold the affected side - both front and back - securely with your hands to help ease the pain. I’ve found this even suppresses the need to sneeze much of the time and that’s even more satisfying ;
    - when sitting and standing up, or sitting up and laying down in bed (or any other effort which causes strain) be sure to breath in before the movement and then out while making the movement ;
    - stay away from the prone position as much as possible: during the day be sure to sit or stand and walk around your house and garden as much as you can without overdoing it. This allows the lungs and other organs to move and function well, clears any phlegm in the system so you can breathe better and ultimately it will ease the pain.
I hope these small tips help you further. I know they have been a godsend for me.

I have got 5 of my ribs broken just a month ago - 5th, 6th, 7th, 9th and 11th rib. Had a motorcycle collision and the other motorcycle directly hit me on my left rib cage area. As the time passed by on that day, the pain became intense, could not walk properly, could not lie down, could not move from one side to another after lying. The most painful part was when I tried to stand up from lying. It took almost 5 minutes to stand on my toes. Anyway, this severe pain existed for 4 to 5 days. After that the pain started to reduce, although it would hurt a lot to move while lying and to get up. I went to Orthopedic, he gave me medicines, told me to wear rib belt (Although many of the internet sites suggest not to use rib belt, anyway occasional use of this belt while walking gave me slight relief) and asked me to continue all my daily works avoiding running and lifting. And I was told that it would take 6 to 8 weeks to heal totally and meet him after one month. I used to apply some pain removal gel which helped me a lot to relax while sitting or lying. I started riding my motorcycle since 10 days from the accident, but very carefully. X-ray was not able to show any sign of crack while the chest CT scan revealed those fractures, my lungs condition was good. I did feel some pain while taking deep breath. The area of the pain used to change the positions from the initial days. I could feel new paining areas even after one week of the incident.
Now, right after one month of the incident, I am very much fit now. Although slight pain is there in the affected area but I can see the progress. Breathing was never an issue for me, as I think the severity of the breakage was not that much. I can ride my bike comfortably now, regained decent amount of strength in the affected area. My body is becoming flexible day by day. I can bend, move my hand backward without any discomfort and so on. Although I did not follow any kind of exercises (as mentioned in the video) during these days, I think that my daily movements and other activities (of course within restriction) helped me to stay active and helped my muscle to grow flexible. I think it will take more 3 to 4 weeks for me to recover completely without any glitches. I hope for the best, let's see. :)
Few suggestions for those who are suffering rib injuries (based on my experience):
    1. Do not lie down the whole day except first few days when the pain is too severe. Take your time and start doing your daily activities.
    2. Do not push yourself such that it pains in that area. If the activity starts hurting, leave it immediately.
    3. You may disagree but using a rib belt sometimes gives you comfort. As it was comfortable for me to walk/ ride motorcycle etc. wearing the rib belt.
    4. Don't get yourself caught cold. It will make the situation worse. Coughing, sneezing will hurt you a lot. As I have experienced it once, I sneezed accidentally and felt like my rib cage was gonna explore! Anyway, after few minutes, the pain went away. But that moment of pain was so horrifying that even now also I am afraid of sneezing. I try to avoid dust as much as I can.
    5. Have faith in yourself, keep patience, you will get well soon. As it sometimes may feel frustrating but don't let it grasp you. Indulge yourself in other creative works. Don's think too much about this pain and all. Eventually the pain will go away and you will become fit after few weeks.

I’ve had rib pain for about 4 years. Occurred after I had a seizure, thought it was just muscle pain but it never went away. Hurts to laugh, lay down, breathe. Pretty much always hurts. When I do the rib cage opener exercise, I get a crackling sound coming from my sternum area on the first rep. I wish I had the money to go to the doctor, living with this pain sucks, I don’t even remember what it feels like to not have the pain anymore.

I bent over a dryer door to grab something that fell on the floor, and dryer door top dug deep into my left side under my breast. @@RaaviSoni , forever It seems! Weeks or months depending on how much support you have, how bad the breakage is, how normal and strong your bones were before, whether or not you keep rebreaking them or tearing your muscles, how much protein and calcium your body absorbs, what your outlook is, how many bones were broken, how badly and where, and your age.
A single small cracked rib may cause only a little pain but the pain for a few broken bones can be extremely severe and intolerable - so much so that you can barely move each day and you can barely even eat or wash yourself let alone lift anything, or even go to the bathroom without screaming out loud. Even changing your own clothes may make you scream. Irregular heartbeat, severe chest pain and even difficulty breathing many occur as well as tightness around the ribs that makes you feel as though you are being kiled by a boa constrictor. Like an extremely severe case of sciatica, which may also leave you completely bedridden for weeks or months, it can be one of the most severe types of pains a human can tolerate.

66 years here. Several weeks ago, stepped on a slippery wooden step. Right foot went shooting out in front, body turned slightly to the left and then crashed down onto the wooden steps and then slid down several steps hitting the damaged left rib cage on every step.
With much pain and very shallow breathing, was able to get up on my feet.
All this almost 4 weeks ago now.
At first a sneeze felt like death for about 5 minutes. Finding comfortable sleeping positions has been next to impossible.
Finally to the point where I can sneeze, cough, laugh etc. without too much pain and finally able to sleep for a bit. Best on the back but in the last day or 2, on the belly has worked. Deep breaths are no longer a problem. Have been doing some stretching but need to do more.
One thing I'm curious about: Sometimes, especially early on but not so much so the last week is, depending on what the body is doing, I sometimes feel a clicking near the injured ribs, which I assume to be cartilage? Thoughts?

    Great video guys!
Really informative!, I especially like the information using the skeleton. I never knew (or thought about) the soft bone area in our ribs!
I was reaching under my granddaughters bed and got pain right behind my left breast when I got some pressure in that area. It’s been sore and I made it worse by doing upper body exercises at the gym yesterday and started having some sharp pain in that area after my workout.i almost thought about leaving in my wet cloths and zipping up my coat. I was afraid to try using my seat belt. While there, I had two 20 minute intervals of the sauna but after watching this video I’m sure that may not have helped much.
Anyway, does anyone know why some people injure their rib area so easily by simply putting pressure there?
I can’t find much on people hurting the rib area this easily.
Of course osteoporosis runs in our family on my mom’s side.

Ouch Amber that sounds painful. Send you love and healing. Hope you feel better soon. I had an injury that put my ribs over the top of my sternum by 2 inches. It finally healed over 2 years. I also punctured my lung and tore diaphragm and tissue off bones. It healed for 20 years. But I just rebroke all the scare tissue and 5 ribs again so want to share some pain relief that helps.
Try on your computer or cell phone search. Search for "CZcams RIFE frequencies for pain". Substitute the words you think you need in place of the "pain". Example search for Broken Ribs. Or for wound healing. Or Antiseptic. Or nerve repair. If you run the frequancy 1 hour x3 times per day you will notice less pain. Turn off your phone Data Minutes Charge as it uses your minutes. Better yet tape record it. Sleep and run it 2 hours. Test the frequencies because some work better than others. Hold speaker near your issue or binary beats should work best with eat speakers. They work just holding speaker near your issue or pain and no ear plugs as well. Run a frequency for at least 18 minutes and you should feel and see results starting at about 18 min.
You will know and feel a good helpful frequency. If it doesn't help try another frequency. The noise is annoying at first but it will also help you sleep. You can even seek a frequency for sleep. Play the sound as LOUD as you can. As long as you can.
ICE is your best friend too. Put water in an empty orange juice plastic bottle and freeze water. No drip and long lasting ice worry free all night.
I hope you feel better real fast. Doctor of Osteopathic Cranial Sacral Adjustments help avoid surgery. Trust your body to heal you.
Poor sweetie. You are strong. Glad you are alive.

So, I’ve been checked out, nothing was punctured, but there are 4 confirmed, with CT scan, broken and 2 more possible but hard to see. All are in alignment. (Spent 3 days in the hospital for pain management and a gigantic hematoma - I was bucked off my horse). I am wondering when these stretches are safe to do? I can see the apple picking being okay, but for example, the back stretching seems a little scary as well as the torso twists. I’m scared that I’m going to move my ribs out of place. I also tend to build scar tissue so I’m nervous about that as well. It’s been 2 weeks + 3 days. Great videos btw.

I took a fall 5 days ago and I’ve been in agony ever since. X-ray does not show any fractures, but we are treating it as a fracture. I’ve been prescribed 3 different meds (pain, muscle relaxer, lidocaine patch) and they don’t provide much relief. I was told the pain could last 4-6 weeks! I don’t know how I’ll handle this that long! Thanks for the video! It’s helped me understand what is happening with my body right now and it’s helped me realize I’m not overreacting with acting like such a baby!

Good info here...though I can tell you there is nothing funny about the pain of cracked ribs...3 weeks and it still hurts to do simple things

Thanks; I have something that started after I fell on a table from a raise bed, as I was getting out of bed. Fell on the rib cage. I had sharp pain with twisting, or reaching from one side to the other and weight bearing with that arm. It's not real bad and absolutely no medicine is required for this. It's much better even just 5 days later, but not completely. I had to lay on my back with limited movement while sleeping.
I am following advice to breath deeply. You help people, thanks guys.

I slipped two days ago and landed on a metal fences bar and broke three ribs at the front. I have never broken bones before and I am terrified, I went to the hospital and they confirmed that it is broken and that my lungs are not punctuated at the moment.
Worst part is that I feel anxious, I really want to hit the gym and lift weights but I know I have to wait so they do not re snap.
Also I can not sleep because every single position is very uncomfortable and the painkillers I was perscribed doesn’t help so much and only works for about 1-2 hours.
I am hoping I can get better soon and the people that go through the same will feel better as well and I am greatful for this video!

Hopefully you recovered by the time you viewed this message. For one i recently fractured my right side and your absolutely right. I had to sleep sitting up for several days since there is so much discomfort i couldn't sleep laying down at all, if i did i would wake up with more pain than the day before. Sneezing, coughing, and unable to pick up the any amount of weight for a avg person. I lift my right hand high and take deep breathes every 3-4 hours heavily and slowly as it eased my pain. Again hope for your speedy recovery & for everyone reading take time off and focus on recovery.

Recovering from Slipping Rib Syndrome. 9 weeks post of and still struggling from spasms in ribs, up and down spine and left abdomen. Its close enough to broken as 1 had to be resected back so another could be sutured to another. Painful painful. Hoping this video has a few recovery tips.

Hard fall and while pain initially severe, got up and thought deep muscle bruise. Next day, coughed and the pain was immediately excruciating. CT revealed a displaced fracture of the 10th rib. The initial fall had only caused a fracture and the rib became displaced when I coughed. Always seek medical confirmation of the break and severity. I’ve endured some severe pain for other medical reasons and the displaced fracture was right up there in the level of pain. The pain meds helped get through the first few days.
