  • Der Golem (German: Der Golem, shown in the USA as The Monster of Fate) is a 1915 silent horror film written and directed by Paul Wegener and Henrik Galeen. The film is an original work inspired by ancient Jewish legend. It is a long lost film (save for a few fragments). It is the first of three Golem films by Wegener, the others being The Golem and the Dancing Girl (1917) and The Golem: How He Came into the World (1920).

Wow! Had no idea even these fragments existed, and quality is great. The golem coming up the stairs and into the camera at 2:32 is creepy.

It makes me sad to think there are so many lost films.

I hope somebody will eventually find this film and "The Golem and the Dancing Girl"... :-(

This film is almost a 100 years old. Amazing how we can even preserve films like this even if they are just fragments.

I read somewhere that it is believed that as much as 90% of films made before 1950 are irretrievably lost. If that is the case (and it isn't hard to believe) then the fact that we have anything from this version is a miracle. Hell, there are films from the 80's that are lost!

This movie deserves to be found, it isnt just a collector's wish.

This film in particular is not the one of the series that is in the easiest way to say it, completely lost. The Golem and the dancing girl is the only one missing all of its footage, The golem (1915) has a version that is slightly over an hour.

Are these really from the 1915 version? The quality is absolutely beautiful. I find it hard to believe that the remainder of the film is lost.

The entire second reel of this has been found, and a reconstruction of it has been made with bridging stills and explanatory text that features 24 minutes of actual footage! Details here:

I have my doubts. This 'news' broke out several years ago and it's already 2022. If it's true, then how come no footage has been leaked online or a reconstruction dvd or bluray released to the public? Why aren't there any still images of the rediscovered footage? I won't believe it till I see it with my own eyes.

ok there is no way that some big major film company in the US somewhere has THE original copy of this movie stashed away somewhere, i'm sure that they would never have let a great classic like this go to waste!

For 1915 it looks so crisp (especially when they are running in the garden)

And if anyone ever found some of the lost Alraune films (from 1918) , I would be ecstatic. As it is, all I can do is comb through IMDB.com and let my mouth water. So sad that early films like this weren't given the treatment they deserve.

I know what you mean. But I wouldn't lose hope; many films have been found that were once thought lost. I about FLIPPED when I found out that the 1915 Frankenstein had been found!

You mean the original 1910 version. The one from 1915 is called Life Without Soul and it was last heard of in 1931 when Universal's Frankenstein came out. It's completely lost today.

Scenes from the original silent version of 'Der Golem'? This is just the prop I needed for the old Torg adventure "Berlin Cinephile" - about a Vampire stalking and murdering the relatives of the films creators in his search for the last surviving copy. I'll use this footage when the players find it.
